Background / History

Lainer extorted Rosalia after discovering the skeleton she had resurrected. Calling Su Li a monster, he threatened to smash the skeleton for its soul stone, demanded Rosalia's winter food and hidden copper coins, and pressured her into leaving the village with Su Li. 1

He later returned to Rosalia's home to demand more, violently broke in when she hid from him, destroyed her belongings, and threatened to sell her to priests. 11

The Wild Wolf Squad forcibly recruited Lainer as a vanguard for an expedition into the Undead Mountain Range. Terrified of the gang, he immediately begged for mercy, then attempted to ingratiate himself with Raging Axe by offering him coins. He learned that the squad sought the Golden Dragon Claw to open ancient ruins beneath the Mass Grave. 12

During the expedition, Lainer relied entirely on Raging Axe for protection while panicking amid the skeleton horde. When Mad Axe intended to use him as bait to escape through the Crimson Corruption, Lainer struck him with a scavenged war hammer, stole his backpack, and fled. Su Li promptly cut the backpack free and took it, leaving Lainer pursued by the surviving Mad Axe. 13 14

After escaping, Lainer tried to avoid retribution from the Wild Wolf Squad by falsely claiming that Rosalia was an evil undead mage responsible for Mad Axe's death. Mara detected his lie but ordered him to lead her to Su Li's mutated skeleton. Lainer then sought out Rosalia to vent his anger, cornering her in an alley and attempting to mutilate her. 19

Rosalia's blood summon brought Su Li to her aid. Su Li incapacitated Lainer, cut his thigh tendons, and presented Rosalia with Lainer's knife so she could decide his fate. Rosalia killed Lainer herself after enduring his pleading. 20

Appearance

Lainer is a burly man with a brutish face, known locally for relying on his physical intimidation and ferocity. 1 12

Personality

Lainer is greedy, cruel, and exploitative toward those weaker than himself. He targets Rosalia for food and money, threatens to sell her to the church, and treats Su Li as a source of profit through his soul stone. 1 11

Despite his bullying behavior, he is deeply cowardly when faced with real danger. He panics upon hearing the Wild Wolf Squad's name, begs Raging Axe to spare him, bribes him for favor, and repeatedly depends on him for protection in the Mass Grave. 12 13

He is also opportunistic and treacherous. When Mad Axe becomes exhausted and plans to sacrifice him, Lainer retaliates immediately, steals his pack, and abandons him rather than finishing him off. 14
