Background / History

Zhong Wanyang is a member of the same generation as Zhao Tianchen and shares an exceptionally close relationship with him, comparable to sworn brothers. Zhao once saved Zhong during an earlier battle against the Crimson Spirit Sect's Third Elder. Their familiarity allows them to argue openly despite Zhong's position as Sect Master. 38

As Sect Master, Zhong initially refused Zhao Tianchen's request to open the Star Pool solely for Fang Hong, arguing that he had to consider the views of the entire sect rather than show favoritism. 38 He later became deeply interested in Fang after Zhao emerged from seclusion specifically to accept him as a disciple and personally sought Zhong's help. 37

Although he values Zhao Tianchen greatly, he initially rejects a special Star Pool opening for Fang Hong because it could provoke dissatisfaction among the disciples. 38 When Zhao later recovers his cultivation and surpasses Zhong's own strength, Zhong is sincerely happy for him rather than threatened by the change. 74

He is also measured in dealing with power and resources. After recognizing Fang Hong's Extinction Eye as a Divine Ability, Zhong prevents the elders from trying to seize it, insisting that Fang be consulted and compensated. 66 67 68 However, he can be decisive and ruthless when the Star River Sect's future is at stake, accepting Fang's proposal to eradicate the Crimson Spirit Sect completely. 84 85

Fang Hong's Entry into the Star River Sect

Zhong first learns of Fang Hong through Zhao Tianchen's unusual decision to leave seclusion and accept a personal disciple. Although initially reluctant to grant Fang special access to the Star Pool, Zhong eventually agrees to Zhao's request. 37 38

During the Sect Grand Competition, Zhong oversees the event and notices a dangerous aura from Fang before Fang defeats Wang An. 57 61 62 After Fang wins first place using the Extinction Eye, Zhong identifies it as a Divine Ability and realizes that other elders may covet it. 66 67

Extinction Eye Negotiation

Zhong convenes the elders and requests that Fang hand over the Extinction Eye cultivation method for the sect's benefit. He explicitly promises compensation rather than coercion. 67 68 Zhao Tianchen negotiates on Fang's behalf for several major resources, including the Purple Sun Treasure Record, Heavenly Yin Treasure Record, Sky Burning Seal Method, Profound Yin Seal Method, Great Sun Yang Sha, Great Yin Moon Sha, and an additional Star Pool baptism. Promotions and Sect Expansion

Following the Crimson Spirit Sect's destruction, Zhong promotes Zhao Tianchen to Grand Elder. When Fang declines the post of Myriad Star Peak Master to focus on cultivation, Zhong instead elevates him to Grand Elder. 90 91

Zhong later works with Fang to establish Canglang Palace as a defensive line and arrange periodic mining of Qingguang Iron Mother Ore. 137 After Fang and Zhao achieve the Dharma Aspect Realm, Zhong publicly celebrates the sect's rise as Great Wei's leading sect. 161

Spirit Realm Crisis

Zhong witnesses Fang Hong's confrontation with Wanyan Zhilan and learns of the Spirit Realm's infiltration of the Origin Realm. He later discusses the danger posed by the Sea Clan turmoil and possible Spirit Realm aggression with Fang and the sect elders. 172 174

When Zhou Tian Immortal Sect envoys question Fang's claims about the Spirit Realm, Zhong firmly defends Fang's credibility. He recounts personally witnessing Fang kill a Spirit Realm intruder and conduct a soul search. 216 217

When Fang prepares to travel to the Zhou Tian Immortal Sect, Zhong chooses to remain behind and continue managing the Star River Sect. He asks that Qiao Feisu and Yue Yunshang be given the opportunity to enter the Immortal Sect as well. 249
