Background / History
Tang Chen was one of the two level-99 Peerless Douluo regarded as pillars of the contemporary Soul Master world. Known as invincible on the continent, he stood as the Clear Sky Sect’s greatest deterrent and maintained a lifelong rivalry with Spirit Hall’s Qian Daoliu, who was known as invincible in the skies. Both had reached the pinnacle of the weapon “Soul” realm, though neither had crossed into its “God” realm. 15
His ability to contend with Qian Daoliu relied heavily on self-created ultimate techniques, especially the Great Sumeru Hammer. Tang Chen himself recognized that the Clear Sky Hammer’s true path did not rest solely on ordinary soul skills. 7 21
He took particular pride in his grandson Tang Hao, whom he believed could inherit the Clear Sky name and potentially surpass him. Tang Hao’s repeated defeats by Yun Yuan forced Tang Chen to acknowledge Yun Yuan’s exceptional martial soul and early grasp of Intent, while pushing him to guide Tang Hao toward mastering the Clear Sky Sect’s deeper combat arts. 15 21
Appearance
Tang Chen is a black-robed man with resolute features, a mountain-like build, and eyes carrying domineering intent. 15
- Black robes. 15
- Sturdy, imposing physique described as “like a mountain.” 15
- A forceful, dominant gaze and presence. 15
- Wields a massive black Clear Sky Hammer streaked with blue lightning in battle. 101
Personality
Tang Chen is intensely proud of both his own power and the Clear Sky Sect’s standing. His lifelong competition with Qian Daoliu extends to their descendants; he brought Tang Hao to Spirit Hall specifically to display the Clear Sky Sect’s new prodigy. 15
Despite his pride, he can put the sect before personal humiliation. When Qian Daoliu arrived at the Clear Sky Sect alongside six Worships, Tang Chen chose to back down rather than risk the sect’s destruction, then brought Tang Xiao and the Great Elder to apologize. 55
He is deeply protective of his family, especially Tang Hao, immediately tending to him after his defeat and encouraging him to turn humiliation into motivation. 20 21 The deaths of his companions and the Clear Sky Sect’s Great Elder during his ocean expedition left him grief-stricken and remorseful, but he ultimately regained his resolve to continue carrying the sect’s banner. 98 99
Tang Chen regarded Yun Yuan as an existential threat to Tang Hao and Tang Xiao’s futures. Although his status and Spirit Hall’s strength initially constrained him from acting directly, he accepted Yun Yuan’s five-year pact as an opportunity to remove the younger prodigy permanently. 103 104
Abilities & Skills
Peerless Douluo Cultivation
Tang Chen possessed level 99 soul power, placing him at the mortal world’s limit just below godhood. 15

- Was regarded as one of the Soul Master world’s two foremost pillars alongside Qian Daoliu. 15 99

Clear Sky True Body

- Was halted by Yun Yuan’s Atlas Spear during their five-year appointment. 162
Heavenly Nine Absolutes
A major Clear Sky Sect combat art that combines nine distinct artistic conceptions into hammer techniques. 101 162
- Nine-Nine Convergence — combines nine forces into a strike stated to surpass a hundred-thousand-year soul skill. 101
- Nine Absolutes as One — merges the concepts of Empty, Seal, Penetrate, Quake, Entangle, Collapse, Break, Instant, and Pierce to enhance the Clear Sky True Body across multiple aspects. 162
- His Nine-Nine Convergence was decisively defeated by Qian Daoliu’s Holy Sword Judgment. 101
- His Nine Absolutes as One was shattered by a single spear strike from Yun Yuan. 162
Great Sumeru Hammer and Exploding Ring
Tang Chen’s greatest self-created ultimate technique is the Great Sumeru Hammer, supported by the Clear Sky Sect’s Exploding Ring method. 7 21
- Its existence allowed Tang Chen to contend with Qian Daoliu despite the latter’s advantage in conventional soul skills. 7
- Qian Daoliu later acknowledged that the Great Sumeru Hammer gave Tang Chen greater attack power than his own. 304
- Tang Chen emphasized the value of a hundred-thousand-year ninth soul ring for maximizing the Clear Sky Hammer’s Exploding Ring method, a teaching Tang Hao later recalled. 206
- In his final battle, Tang Chen detonated all nine soul rings to empower a last Great Sumeru Hammer attack. 162
- The attack was pierced by Yun Yuan’s Three Forces Combined, resulting in Tang Chen’s death. 162
Relationships

- Tang Zhen — Son and successor as Clear Sky Sect Sect Master after Tang Chen chose to step down and enter seclusion. 98 103 104
- Yun Yuan — Spirit Hall Saint Son and eventual killer. Tang Chen initially recognized Yun Yuan’s talent, later accepted a five-year fight-to-the-death pact with him, and was killed in their duel. 21 103 162
Story Role / Major Arcs
Spirit Hall Youth Contest
Tang Chen visited Spirit Hall with Tang Hao and proposed a contest between the younger generations of the Clear Sky Sect and Spirit Hall. He intended to showcase Tang Hao, but watched Yun Yuan defeat his grandson despite Yun Yuan having only one soul ring. 15 20
Afterward, Tang Chen conceded that Yun Yuan’s talent surpassed Tang Hao’s in the short term. He advised Tang Hao to stop relying on ordinary soul skills and instead pursue the Clear Sky Hammer’s true combat path. 21 22
Clear Sky Sect–Spirit Hall Confrontation
When Qian Daoliu and six Worships pressured the Clear Sky Sect over events in Heaven Dou City, Tang Chen initially resisted but yielded to prevent the sect from being destroyed. He accepted responsibility and prepared Tang Xiao and the Great Elder to apologize to Spirit Hall. 55
Ocean Defeat and Pill Hall Conflict
Tang Chen undertook an ocean expedition to obtain a Whale Shark, but encountered a terrifying Demon Whale Soul Beast. He was severely wounded, lost the Whale Shark, and watched every accompanying Clear Sky Sect member—including the Great Elder—die. 98 99
At the Pill Hall inauguration, Tang Chen confronted Qian Daoliu over the Breaking Clan’s defection to Spirit Hall. His challenge led to another duel with Qian Daoliu, where his Heavenly Nine Absolutes were overwhelmed by Holy Sword Judgment. 100 101
Five-Year Appointment and Death
Following his loss, Tang Chen accepted Yun Yuan’s five-year pact to fight to the death. He stepped down as Sect Master, entered seclusion to recover from his ocean injuries, and intended to eliminate Yun Yuan before the younger prodigy could fully mature. 103 104
Tang Chen emerged from seclusion fully recovered and fought Yun Yuan outside Jialing Pass. Yun Yuan stopped his Clear Sky True Body, destroyed his Nine Absolutes as One, and pierced Tang Chen’s final Great Sumeru Hammer with Three Forces Combined. Tang Chen died in the resulting strike. 160 161 162
His death removed the Clear Sky Sect’s greatest protection and directly preceded Spirit Hall’s assault on the sect. 163
