Background / History

Illya was created and repeatedly modified by the Einzbern family as an artificial human intended to serve as the Holy Grail. Her body was altered into a network of Magic Circuits, leaving her in continual pain and giving her a shortened lifespan; she is said to have only three years remaining. Should she take on the Grail's function, her human functions would deteriorate until she could fall into an irreversible coma. 223 230

As an Einzbern Master, Illya commanded Berserker during the Holy Grail War. The Einzberns' objective was not merely the Grail's wish-granting ability, but attainment of the Third Magic through the souls of all Servants. 122 150 184

Illya resented her father, Kiritsugu Emiya, for abandoning her at the Einzbern estate after ordering Saber to destroy the Grail in the previous war.
