Anduin returned to the ranch from Gaunt Old House and hurried into the laboratory. Then he carefully tipped the ring onto the workbench.
Just as Anduin was preparing to examine it closely, a whisper suddenly reached his ears. The voice was full of temptation, like an insect trying to crawl through his ear and into his brain.
But Anduin had exceptionally strong willpower, and he quickly noticed something was wrong. He immediately channeled his magic and used Legilimency to lock down his thoughts.
"Strange. My senses couldn't have been wrong just now. This ring really did produce a force that tried to interfere with my consciousness, and it was full of malice. Could this thing be alive?" Anduin furrowed his brow, his expression growing more serious.
Anduin had seen plenty in his time, so even though this was a strange occurrence, he wasn't especially nervous. He was simply growing more curious about the ring.
Fortunately, locking down his thoughts had blocked the ring's influence. Its malice hadn't lessened, though, and he could even sense a gaze peering at him.
"Voldemort?"
Anduin seemed to think of something, then tested the name in a voice brimming with magic.
At the sound of his question, the ring suddenly began to vibrate violently with a buzz. Transparent ripples accompanied the vibration, and the Magic Wave turned into a solid-seeming radiation that kept pressing toward Anduin.
Unfortunately for the ring, Anduin's Legilimency had erected a sturdy wall around the surface of his mind. No matter how hard the ring tried, it couldn't affect him in the slightest.
"So that's it. It's a Horcrux..."
Seeing the ring's reaction, Anduin nodded in understanding. He'd already thought the malice and magic radiating from it seemed familiar; they were quite similar to what he had sensed in Voldemort's soul.
