Background and History

Silver Spear began in the eighteenth century as a small club for Aspen-wand wielders. Its members shared spells and duelling techniques, then gained notoriety for challenging other wizards and seriously injuring—or killing—opponents. The club’s name subsequently vanished from public history after a deadly internal conflict 227 442.

According to Thunderbird, that conflict began after the club acquired the formula for the Snake Slough Potion, also called the Elixir of Immortality. The potion could rejuvenate its users, but its side effects made them vulnerable during a recurring shedding period. Suspicion and infighting left Runic Snake as the sole survivor. He later cultivated new subordinates to obtain the magical creatures needed to keep producing the potion. Thunderbird and other early members rebuilt the club with help from Grindelwald and their work in the Saint’s Society 441 442.

By Anduin’s investigation, Silver Spear operated across Europe as an underground magical-creature supplier. A price list bearing its seal included foreign creatures and sentient beings. Its branches also used black-market collaborators to conduct day-to-day business 227 248 394.

Organization

• Recruitment: Prospective members undergo trials centered on duelling. An Aspen wand and faceless mask mark formal membership; existing members, chiefly Long Spears, introduce recruits 348 395.
• Secrecy: Members use magical-creature codenames and generally do not know one another’s public identities. Masks provide communication, though Spears often delay replies to conceal their shedding periods 348 441.
• Headquarters: Its underground facilities include an information library, supply depot, duelling hall, and reception room. Rewards have three assessment-gated tiers, with access to the Elixir of Immortality above them 466 468.
• Leadership: Runic Snake headed the club, while Golden Flyer presided over Long Blade Meetings in his absence. The founding elders included Thunderbird, Phoenix, Black Dragon, and Golden Flyer 442 527.

Operations

• Magical-creature trade: Branches obtained and transported creatures for sale and for Elixir production. The club sought a British transit point for shipments from the Americas and maintained breeding parks in Germany 227 467 500.
• Branch autonomy: Headquarters pooled and allocated resources, while external Spears managed their own operations and periodically sent resources back 394 395.
• German influence: Club figures cultivated Ministry officials and sought to divide Germany, potentially placing a resulting country under Silver Spear’s control 468 500 529.

Downfall

Anduin infiltrated headquarters while impersonating Thunderbird, gathered intelligence on its members, and worked with Andre against its German operations 465 468 500. As the club lost creature supplies, Spears turned against one another over access to the Elixir 583 584. Anduin later dismantled headquarters and recovered an archive identifying Short Spears in multiple countries. With the headquarters supply gone, surviving Elixir-dependent Spears had only months to live 611.
