Only a small number of candidates could flexibly apply the tracking techniques from Tactical Training Studies, relying on nothing but basic Tracking Charms and their own eyes to pick up their enemies' trails.

Most of the rest were just guessing. They would pick a suspicious-looking direction and chase after it, then turn back when they found nothing. They were like rabbits darting around without any idea where to go.

Some particularly stubborn candidates charged after a false trail until they blundered into another candidate's trial area.

And when Anduin encountered students with no method or plan at all, he decisively eliminated them early, sparing them from embarrassing themselves any further.

So although the trial was supposed to last three days, candidates were eliminated early each day. By the final day, only a dozen or so remained in the Forbidden Forest.
