"They're afraid. That includes your father."

"Mm..." Anduin nodded. "The Pure-blood families have grown accustomed to a noble lifestyle, but it's also made them lazy and unwilling to work hard or improve themselves."

"Sadly..." Anduin's expression turned mocking. "The Pure-blood families that have survived to this day have, to one degree or another, intermarried with Muggles or Half-bloods. Otherwise, they would've died out long ago through close-kin marriages."

"What?" Draco was startled. "You mean the Pure-blood families all have Muggle ancestry? That's a huge scandal!"

"What scandal? Do you think nobody knows about their little secrets? People just keep quiet out of consideration for their feelings. After all, everyone in the wizarding world is related to everyone else to some degree." Anduin shook his head dismissively.

"If you don't believe me, go look through the Malfoy family tree. Those ancestors whose names were left out were probably Muggles."

"But if that's true, why do Father and the others insist on clinging to so-called Pure-blood heritage? Everyone's Half-blood!" Draco frowned, unable to understand.

"It's just an excuse—a way to justify getting something for nothing. After years of deliberate propaganda, they've instilled in everyone the idea that Pure-blood wizards are more noble. They've even reinforced that impression through deliberate and casual discrimination."
