Background / History
Kranah Angelos was the protected only daughter of a Selgante conglomerate family. She became the Grand Matriarch of the Joy Cult and once used the title “Carnival Queen,” but Lliira did not tolerate anyone else bearing that designation. During the Saint Cataclysm, Lliira’s Saint Incarnation personally favored her, making Kranah the goddess’s mortal lover and granting her influence far beyond that of ordinary Joy Priests. 391 393
As Grand Matriarch, she directed members of the Joy Cult according to Lliira’s teachings and maintained the Temple of Joy through an apparently inexhaustible treasury. Her wealth supported the cult’s luxurious lifestyle, personnel, and temple expenses. 395 397
Her position made her a target. Multiple factions plotted her assassination during the instability after the Saint Cataclysm, including the Church of Pain. Duncan’s intervention repeatedly prevented her death, allowing the Joy Cult to survive an attack that would otherwise have crippled its influence in Selgante. 391 396 406
Her initial failure to protect the church caused Lliira’s favor to shift toward Duncan. Faced with marginalization, Kranah formed a closer alliance with him, eventually accepting his authority over the Joy Church’s military power while seeking to preserve her own status. 411 412 423
After discovering Duncan’s abandoned plans for church reform, she began considering a change of faith should he ascend to godhood. She later led his followers in providing basic aid, healing, work, and protection to impoverished believers. Exposure to widespread suffering tempered much of her former frivolity and awakened a more sincere compassion for common people. 451 494 495
Appearance
The Mother of Great Bliss is a strikingly beautiful, curvaceous woman whose appearance is deliberately lavish and theatrical. She favors expensive jewelry, revealing formalwear, intricate cosmetics, and enchanted footwear; even in public, she presents herself as an untouchable divine figure. 391 392 402 412
- Long black hair, often arranged in an elaborate bun with purple gemstone ornaments. 412
- Fair skin that appears to emit a faint spiritual radiance under magical lighting. 392
- Frequently wears luxurious red or purple-accented formal attire and costly jewelry, including a Dragon Heart gem. 391 402
- Formerly levitated rather than walked, treating contact with the ground as beneath her dignity. 392 395
- Uses ornate enchanted crystal shoes because they better enhance her appearance than practical combat equipment. 403
Personality
Kranah is vain, hedonistic, and highly conscious of appearances. She seeks public admiration, takes pride in spectacle, and often treats the Joy Cult’s ceremonies as a stage on which she must be the most dazzling figure present. 402 447
Despite her superficiality, she is notably generous. She rewards useful allies lavishly, funded Duncan’s comfort and advancement within the cult, and distributed property, servants, supplies, and a Legendary Artifact after his successes. 403
Her confidence initially concealed severe insecurity. Having been protected throughout her life and possessing almost no genuine combat experience, she panicked when personally threatened and became desperate for greater divine power after repeated assassination attempts. Her use of Blue Mushroom Powder worsened this instability. 393 404
Later events force her to mature. Though she remains attached to luxury and status, leading relief work among the poor gives her a more composed, compassionate outlook and a sense that her work can matter beyond pleasure and prestige. 494 495
