Lu Yuan woke from hunger.
When he opened his eyes, the light in the room had already dimmed. The sliver of daylight leaking through the curtains carried a reddish glow—the color of evening.
Lu Yuan did not get up immediately. He first estimated the time in his head. It had only just become fully light when he returned from the Tower of Erudition, and now the sky had darkened. At least an entire day had passed.
At the edge of his vision, Gray-White Text silently settled the accounts.

Lu Yuan stared at those two lines of numbers, stunned at first.
The Sanity restored by sleep had always been fixed at twelve points, never a point more. Yet after the twelve points had been added this time, the number had continued climbing on its own, gaining another eleven points.
But Lu Yuan quickly understood. The extra amount came from the medicine Margaret had injected into his blood; it was still taking effect.
When the medicine entered his bloodstream yesterday, Gray-White Text had mentioned the words "long-lasting." It seemed that throughout his sleep, the medicine had never stopped working, secretly replenishing his Sanity bit by bit.
Half of his one-hundred-and-forty-point limit was still empty, but the fogginess in his mind had finally dispersed for the most part. He was no longer as sluggish as before, needing to run every sentence through his mind twice before understanding it.
Lu Yuan let out a breath and pushed himself upright. Just as he was about to get out of bed, a faint sound suddenly came from the living room outside.
It was very soft, like someone setting down tableware.
Lu Yuan's hand rested on the edge of the bed.
This house had been assigned to him alone by the
