Background / History

Lu Yuan was an ore hunter before transmigrating into an unfamiliar world. He arrived at the former home of Doctor Laisen in Grim Port, discovered that Laisen had succumbed to the Strange Dream and transformed into a human-faced fish, and adopted the identity of Laisen's friend to survive. 1 4 5

Lu Yuan initially sought only to survive in a world threatened by monsters. Hans and Mary recruited him as a Night Watch consultant by offering protection, pay, and access to the Transcendence Path. 16

At the Hall of Knowledge, Lu Yuan rejected narrower specialist paths and entered the Hall of Scholars despite its reputation as the most dangerous path. Its shadowy guardian granted him Forbidden Studies and Deep Study, warning him not to return lightly. 21

While stationed around Grim Port, he pursued knowledge aggressively, trading an Eastern antique ink block to Book Spirit Mo Shui for texts on Sanity barriers and deep-sea creatures. Mo Shui also warned him that someone with an abnormal aura had examined his employment file. 33

Lu Yuan and Frey enter a fog-filled consciousness world where his usual artifacts and symbiote are unavailable. Frey's returning memories cause pain and whispers, but his reassuring touch coincides with her distress subsiding. Since she has arrived in different locations on separate visits and remembers only fragments, he refuses to trust her old route, reasoning that it may lead toward the force that originally drew her in. Meanwhile, he senses his distant connection to the Sea of Knowledge's Authority gradually strengthening. 649

When two contaminated Heretics begin chanting, Lu Yuan attacks before they can complete their ritual. His consciousness-body effortlessly breaks their flesh-and-bone defenses, and each kill grants Sanity IV experience while consuming current Sanity. Their corpses decay and are absorbed by the ground, leading him to infer that the land itself is alive and appears to consume the dead. 653

A cult leader then traps Lu Yuan in a cocoon of bone and rotting flesh and subjects him to repeated soul assaults. Lu Yuan passes the checks, gains minor immunity and experience, and deliberately remains inside until the rewards stop. He breaks free, tears through the leader's successive barriers, and kills him, raising Sanity IV to 98/140. Frey's alarm gives way to renewed confidence that Lu Yuan can help her escape. 657
