The tranquility of the library was broken by the rainbow outside the window, a sign of life blooming on Sakura Airi's canvas, like a faint signal piercing the gloom.
Toudou Shizuka looked at the green on the communication interface, his fingertips lingering on the cool edge of the device for a moment before he made his decision.
Yamauchi's slander, Sakura's panic, the precarious 56 trust points... the security brought by anonymity felt so fragile in the face of reality's vortex.
Continuing to hide would only turn the cracks in Sakura's emotional wall into an unbridgeable chasm.
He needed to confess to Sakura. Not just for the points (though A-rank photography skills were within reach), but to offer some comfort to the socially anxious girl who seemed so lost in despair. For that clumsy yet genuine gratitude.
[TO: Sakura Airi]
[Regarding those pigments and point cards. After school this afternoon, if you're free, could we meet at "Aikun Cafe" on the Commercial Street? There are some things I think it would be better to explain in person.]
The message sent, Toudou Shizuka closed the device, his heart beating steadily in his chest. [Rational Analysis B-rank] suppressed a trace of imperceptible nervousness. This was a carefully prepared, honest conversation, fraught with both risk and opportunity.
Aikun Cafe was located on a quieter corner of the Commercial Street. Warm yellow light spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows onto the dark wooden tables and chairs, the air filled with the rich aroma of coffee beans and soft jazz music.
Toudou Shizuka chose a corner seat by the window, offering a wide view and relative privacy.
Sakura Airi arrived almost exactly on time.
She was still wearing that oversized gray hoodie, her large black-rimmed glasses covering half her face.
She stood at the entrance, nervously twisting the hem of her clothes, her eyes scanning the interior like a fawn lost in unfamiliar territory.
Seeing Toudou Shizuka wave slightly, she took a deep breath, lowered her head, and hurried over, almost sliding into the seat opposite him, her body tense.
"Tou... Toudou-kun..." Her voice was as faint as a mosquito's hum, filled with great unease.
"Sakura-san, thank you for coming." Toudou Shizuka's voice was gentle and calm, with a hint of apology. "What would you like to drink? My treat, as... an apology."
"Ap... apology?" Sakura Airi's head snapped up, her eyes behind her glasses filled with confusion and a flicker of barely concealed panic.
Toudou Shizuka didn't answer immediately. He beckoned the waiter.
He ordered a warm honey yuzu tea for Sakura (to soothe her emotions) and a latte for himself. While waiting for the drinks, he deliberately created a quiet atmosphere, allowing Sakura's tense nerves to relax slightly.
When the drinks were served and the steam rose between them, Toudou Shizuka finally looked directly at Sakura, his tone serious and filled with sincere apology:
"Sakura-san, I'm very sorry for what you experienced in the classroom. Regarding Yamauchi-kun's slander in your class, and everyone's misunderstanding... I apologize for causing you embarrassment."
Sakura Airi's body visibly trembled. Her large glasses drooped, and her fingers tightly gripped the warm cup.
"It's... it's fine... it's all over..." she murmured, her voice thick with suppressed hurt.
"It's not fine." Toudou Shizuka's voice was soft but carried an undeniable weight. "Those things, the pigments, the point cards... I bought them on my personal terminal and left them in front of your locker."
"Ah?" (Although she might have suspected Toudou-kun's help, hearing it directly from him was still surprising.)
Sakura Airi's head shot up. Behind her large glasses, her usually anxious eyes were now wide with shock and disbelief!
She stared blankly at Toudou Shizuka, her lips parted, but no sound came out. The precise brands, the useful energy bars, the anonymous point cards flashed through her mind... So it was him! It had always been him!
"Wh... why?" After a long moment, she finally found her voice, thick with confusion and a tremor. "Toudou-kun... you... you didn't have to do that... I..." She wanted to say "I don't deserve it," as a wave of immense self-doubt surged within her.
Toudou Shizuka observed her reaction. [Thought Acceleration] and B-rank Insight allowed him to clearly perceive the shock, confusion, and self-deprecation in her eyes, and beneath it all, a faint, almost invisible trace of... relief? Knowing who it was made her feel more at ease than anonymous kindness?
"There's no special reason." Toudou Shizuka softened his tone, speaking with a reassuring honesty. "That time at the photography store, I saw how scared you were.
Later, I heard that Class D's points were wiped clean, and I thought you might need basic art supplies to continue with something you love.
I just felt... those things shouldn't become the reason for you to be misunderstood and attacked."
"Whether you deserve it or not isn't for you to decide. I helped you simply because I saw you in trouble and needing help. If I had stood by and done nothing, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself.
When I was in trouble myself, someone helped me without a second thought.
Everyone goes through difficult times. I'm just helping others when I can."
He avoided words like "soft-hearted" or "pity" that might wound her pride, framing his motives as "not wanting kindness to be misunderstood" and "supporting her hobby."
He paused, looking at Sakura's still-shocked face, and added, "I chose to remain anonymous because I was afraid of putting pressure on you or drawing unnecessary attention.
I didn't expect... it would actually lead to bigger trouble for you. I apologize for the incident with Yamauchi-kun in your class. It was my oversight."
His candid words, like a gentle stream, washed away the ice of misunderstanding and humiliation that had built up in Sakura's heart. After the shock, an indescribable warmth, accompanied by a profound ache, welled up within her.
It wasn't charity, but protection. He had been watching silently, caring, even choosing silence out of concern that he might burden her.
The immense humiliation and fear caused by Yamauchi's slander melted away under the weight of this sincere, apologetic confession.
Tears burst from her eyes without warning, large drops falling onto the table.
Sakura Airi hastily lowered her head, her large glasses unable to hide her trembling shoulders and suppressed sobs. This time, it wasn't fear or despair, but the overwhelming impact of being understood and cherished after long suppression, a mix of hurt and inexpressible emotion.
"I... I'm sorry... Toudou-kun..." she choked out, her words jumbled. "I... I'm not... I'm not blaming you... I just... just..." She didn't know what to say, the sheer emotional impact causing her to lose control.
