Background / History

Earlier Era: Conflict with Ye Mu

Shrek’s admission requirements demand exceptional young applicants: no older than thirteen, at least Level 21 Soul Power, and two hundred-year Soul Rings. Applicants must then pass four assessments. Its registration practices become a point of conflict when Ye Mu threatens to expose Vice Dean Zhao Wuji’s hiding place to Martial Soul Hall. Zhao Wuji orders Li Yusong to return the parents’ registration fees 46 50.

After a dangerous soul-beast hunt, Flender acknowledges that the academy’s preparations were inadequate. He also advises against provoking Ye Mu, whose background and strength make him too dangerous to confront. Nevertheless, Ye Mu later publicly challenges Yu Xiaogang’s teaching qualifications and threatens to destroy Shrek if its members interfere 81 85 86.

The academy’s reputation deteriorates throughout Suotuo City. Ning Rongrong reports that vendors refuse to sell to its members or charge inflated prices, while Soul Fighting Arena spectators accuse it of scamming applicants and sheltering wanted criminals. Its students wear masks to compete, but Meng Yiran exposes their identities 146 149.

Repeated arena defeats threaten Shrek’s finances. Flender’s attempt to persuade Ye Mu to leave fails, and he recognizes that losing Soul Fighting income could make the academy impossible to maintain. Its leadership decides to relocate to Tiandou City and seek entry into Heaven Dou Royal Academy 152 153 154.

Qin Ming helps the Shrek group obtain access, but Dai Mubai’s attack on Prince Xue Beng undermines the arrangement. Prince Xue Xing subsequently orders the group beaten and expelled. Liu Erlong takes away the unconscious students after Ye Mu stops their bleeding 157 158 159 160 161.

Ten Thousand Years Later: Prestige and Internal Problems

The later Shrek has become a prestigious institution with an extensive network of graduates and powerful experts. Its foundation makes rival powers reluctant to attack it directly. However, its Soul Tool Department remains far behind Sun Moon Royal Soul Tool Master Academy, and traditional Martial Soul cultivation dominates its priorities 171 234 305.

Ma Xiaotao and Zhang Lexuan recognize corruption within the academy but initially lack the influence to correct it. Ma Xiaotao resolves to become stronger and gather support for reform. Ye Mu enters this later Shrek partly for entertainment and partly with the intention of eventually turning it into a Spirit Hall branch 139 148 172.

Ye Mu’s protection of Xiao Xiao exposes the academy’s disciplinary failures. Zhou Yi has pressured Xiao Xiao to attach a Soul Ring to her second Martial Soul against her wishes and safety interests. Yan Shaozhe expels Zhou Yi, bans her from Shrek City, and promises Xiao Xiao an apology. Fan Yu subsequently leaves with Zhou Yi and offers intelligence about Ye Mu to Sun Moon Royal Soul Tool Master Academy 214 217 232 235.

Ye Mu’s Succession and Reform

Ye Mu’s rapid progress as a Soul Engineer strengthens the Soul Tool Department’s reputation and leads students to consider transferring into it. Mu En regards him as a possible successor capable of changing the continent’s Soul Tool landscape. The academy also invests a hundred-thousand-year Soul Bone in his development 247 252.

Ye Mu initially rejects becoming Shrek’s successor, but later accepts the prospect of major institutional reform. Mu En supports him despite knowing that the academy may become very different, asking that its name remain unchanged and that Ye Mu avoid excessive killing. The Sea God Pavilion announces Ye Mu as its next master 253 370 371 374.

The reforms produce visible changes within months: students train voluntarily for points, research facilities expand, graduates return with resources and expertise, and retired elders rejoin the academy. Ye Mu’s Spirit Soul system then gives Shrek control over a new method of obtaining Soul Rings without killing Soul Beasts 388 393 395.

Later Leadership and Imperial Wars

Dozens of Title Douluo auras appear around Shrek during a tightly guarded internal event. An imperial report records no fewer than forty, but the Sea God Pavilion provides no explanation beyond “everything is normal” 410.

Although Ye Mu previously considers joining Shrek’s strength with the Spirit Hall Empire, he later assures Mu En that the academy will not become an imperial vassal or war machine. Zhang Lexuan becomes acting Pavilion Master when Ye Mu steps down to enter seclusion 410 417 419.

Shrek does not intervene when the Heaven Dou and Dou Ling empires fall. Instead, it receives talent and resources from the defeated states. After the revived Spirit Hall Empire conquers the major empires, Shrek issues no public announcement or official opposition 427 436.

Problems Identified Before Reform

  • Lax discipline — Yan Shaozhe admits overlooking Zhou Yi’s previous mistreatment of students for Fan Yu’s sake 214.
  • Unsafe supervision — Ye Mu recounts an incident in which Xuanzi left Inner Disciples to eat and drink, after which a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast nearly destroyed their team 137.

Revised Admissions and Training

  • Traditional talent admissions — High Innate Soul Power or strong Soul Tool aptitude accounts for forty percent of admissions 379.
  • Specialist recruitment — Thirty percent is reserved for exceptional talent in forging, pills, tactical command, medicine, intelligence analysis, and related fields, without a Martial Soul rank restriction 379.
  • Exceptional admission — A Level 15 applicant with outstanding Soul Tool blueprint-design ability can qualify despite previously falling below Shrek’s standards 379.
  • Separate educational tracks — Combat, research, and management students are to follow programs suited to their talents and interests rather than one common syllabus 373.
  • Cross-disciplinary experience — Combat students intern in Soul Tool factories, while research students participate in practical combat testing 381.
