Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Titled Douluo; Jade Scale Serpent Emperor 30 A retrospective account states that reaching Titled Douluo evolved his Jade Scale Serpent into the Serpent Emperor. This evolution helped him survive his own venom but did not eliminate its harmful effects.
Golden Horn Jade Flood Dragon 30 31 Consumes the Earth Dragon Golden Gourd under Su Ze’s guidance, awakening his martial soul’s dragon bloodline. The evolution removes his snake-poison affliction and strengthens his poison with golden fiend energy 35.
Physical strength increased by almost one level 35 Consumes most of the ten pieces of ten-thousand-year whale rubber obtained by Ye Qingxian. This is a physical improvement, not a stated Soul Power breakthrough.
Level 92–93 38 The encounter with Di Tian gives conflicting figures: narration calls him Level 93, while another passage describes him as having reached Level 92 following martial soul evolution.
Level 93 confirmed 41 Dugu Yan’s thoughts explicitly identify her grandfather as having broken through to Level 93.
Level 95 97 98 136 Refines the Ten Headed Fierce Yang Serpent’s Inner Core supplied by Su Ze. His increased strength and Soul Power reserves are evident during the assassination attempt; he later confirms that the core enabled his breakthrough to Level 95.

Background / History

Dugu Bo lost his parents in his youth, his wife in middle age, and his son later in life. The Jade Scale Snake Poison also claimed his daughter-in-law, leaving Dugu Yan as his only surviving close relative. His determination to spare her the same fate drives his search for a cure 25 29.

Despite his reputation as the Poison Douluo, his own martial soul’s venom had penetrated his body and bones. Its outbreaks left him vulnerable, so he concealed the defect and spent several months each year at his Medicine Garden, using the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Eye’s special environment to suppress it 29 30.

Appearance

  • Build and age: An elderly, gaunt man with an emaciated face and withered, bony hands 25 29 30.
  • Hair and beard: An unusual ink-green color 29.
  • Eyes: Emerald-green, snake-like pupils with a cold, viper-like gaze 29 136.
  • Soul Power: Releases emerald-green Soul Power and conspicuous green poison mist 29 73 98.

Personality

Dugu Bo is threatening and suspicious when his family’s hidden weakness is exposed. He abducts Su Ze, tests him with poison and Titled Douluo pressure, and threatens to turn him into fertilizer if his claims prove false. Mentioning Dugu Yan’s future is what persuades him to withdraw his killing intent and listen 29.

His granddaughter takes priority over his own advancement. He initially chooses a less ambitious treatment so that she can receive the opportunity for martial soul evolution instead. Later, he admits that he would have saved the Ten Headed Fierce Yang Serpent’s Inner Core for her if the impending conflict had not made his own strength urgently necessary 30 94.

He keeps his promises and repays life-saving help with lasting loyalty. After Su Ze cures him, he recognizes the boy as the Dugu Family’s benefactor and refuses to abandon him even when Chrysanthemum Douluo threatens his life. His admiration also has a pragmatic side: he sees Su Ze’s potential godhood as a way to secure his family’s future 30 31 98.

As a guardian, he favors careful cultivation over reckless gains. He warns Su Ze against consuming too many Immortal Herbs, checks whether his body can withstand a ten-thousand-year third soul ring, and prepares to interrupt the absorption if necessary 34 35.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Scale Snake Poison

  • Earned his title of Poison Douluo through his mastery of the Jade Scale Snake’s venom 25.
  • Releases poison into the air before engaging an opponent. He uses this tactic to incapacitate a ten-thousand-year Thousand Fiend Instant Cloud Dragon 35.
  • Following martial soul evolution, his venom incorporates golden fiend energy and becomes substantially stronger 35.
  • His later poison mist melts attacking Soul Ancestors and Soul Fighters into blood and corrodes Chrysanthemum Douluo’s summoned flower 98.
  • Can weaken an opponent’s circulation of Soul Power: Yang Wudi becomes limp and nearly collapses after exposure 138.
  • Limits: His mist is visibly green or purple, making it conspicuous. Bibi Dong’s spiders can absorb, alter, and take control of it; Chrysanthemum Douluo later deploys a Spider King to exploit this countermeasure 73 98 103.

Seventh Soul Skill: Flood Dragon True Body

  • Manifests a flood dragon hundreds of meters long 62.
  • Fires poisonous light from its mouth, accompanied by the martial soul’s golden horn 62.
  • Its poison causes nearby vegetation and ground to wither, while forcing Tang Hao to account for the vulnerability of Tang San and Xiao Wu 62.

Pharmacology and Poison Research

  • Recognizes ten-thousand-year whale rubber by its scent and notices that Su Ze’s consumption strengthens rather than damages his body 29.
  • Works with Ye Qingxian to investigate Immortal Herbs that could further strengthen his poison 72.
  • Supplies Su Ze with poisons, healing medicines, and detailed instructions before his training journey 76.

Poison Arrays and Battlefield Protection

  • Plans to cover Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s surroundings with poison arrays to repay the support he has received 103.
  • Uses spreading poison mist to deny attackers access to his courtyard 98.
  • After refining the serpent Inner Core, claims enough Soul Power to sustain combat for three days and nights 98.
  • Limit: Di Tian’s pressure immobilizes him despite his evolved martial soul; Dugu Bo cannot meaningfully resist the Black Dragon King 38.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Medicine Garden at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Eye — Initially his refuge for suppressing venom outbreaks. He grants Su Ze permission to use its herbs to cure him, then allows him continued access 29 31.
  • Earth Dragon Golden Gourd — An earth- and dragon-attribute Immortal Herb. He consumes its golden flower to evolve his martial soul into the Golden Horn Jade Flood Dragon 30 31.
  • Ten-thousand-year whale rubber — Consumed to improve his physical strength after learning its benefits from Su Ze 34 35.
  • Ten Headed Fierce Yang Serpent’s Inner Core — A gift from Su Ze, obtained in the City of Slaughter. Refining it enables Dugu Bo’s advancement to Level 95 93 97 136.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — His beloved granddaughter. He guards her martial soul evolution, prioritizes her future, and supports her relationship with Su Ze 30 33 94 136.
  • Su Ze — Initially an abducted suspect, later his family’s benefactor and a young man he treats like family. Their support is reciprocal: Dugu Bo provides protection and medicinal resources, while Su Ze cures his venom affliction and supplies the Inner Core that advances his cultivation 29 30 93 94 136.
  • Ye Qingxian — A medical collaborator who helps select herbs for Dugu Yan, participates in soul-ring hunts, and researches stronger poisons with him 33 35 72.
  • Chen Xin / Sword Douluo — An ally in defending Su Ze and Heaven Dou City against Martial Soul Hall 98 102 103.
  • Tang Hao — An enemy targeted after threatening Su Ze. Dugu Bo pursues him with his evolved poison and later researches improvements because he considers the previous attack insufficient 62 72.
  • Yue Guan / Chrysanthemum Douluo — A longstanding opponent. Their rivalry resumes during the assassination attempt, when Yue Guan tries to exhaust his poison mist and pressures him to abandon Su Ze 98.
  • Bibi Dong — A political and personal enemy whose expansion threatens the Heaven Dou Empire and Su Ze. Her spider abilities directly counter his poison 93 98 103.
  • Di Tian — Initially a perceived threat whom Dugu Bo attempts to hold off. After witnessing his power and protection of Su Ze, Dugu Bo trusts that Su Ze is safe in his company 38 101.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Meeting Su Ze and Ending the Family’s Poison Affliction

Dugu Yan’s report of Su Ze’s poison immunity brings him to Dugu Bo’s attention. Dugu Bo abducts Su Ze to investigate, then takes him to the Medicine Garden after hearing that its herbs may provide a cure. Su Ze offers three approaches: a poison-immune body created through Immortal Herbs, a soul-bone method, or martial soul evolution. Dugu Bo ultimately chooses evolution and becomes Su Ze’s committed protector 25 29 30 31.

Guardian During Early Cultivation

Dugu Bo guards Su Ze’s herb absorption and leads the group into the Star Dou Great Forest for soul rings. He subdues the Thousand Fiend Instant Cloud Dragon for Su Ze’s third ring, assists Ye Qingxian’s hunt, and finds suitable beasts for Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling. When Di Tian later arrives for Su Ze, Dugu Bo offers to stay behind while the younger members escape 34 35 36 38.

Conflict with Tang Hao

Dugu Bo pursues Tang Hao after the latter threatens Su Ze, deploying Flood Dragon True Body and poison powerful enough to restrict Tang Hao’s options while carrying Tang San and Xiao Wu. He subsequently works with Ye Qingxian to improve the venom further 62 72.

Martial Soul Hall’s Attacks

After Su Ze returns from the City of Slaughter, Dugu Bo explains Bibi Dong’s ambition to annex the two empires. He refines Su Ze’s serpent Inner Core and, alongside Chen Xin, resists the ensuing assassination attempt. Di Tian’s intervention destroys the courtyard; Dugu Bo survives and withdraws with Chen Xin 93 97 98 99.

He then relocates Dugu Yan and the Ye family near the Medicine Garden for safety. During the later threat to Heaven Dou City, he helps defend Heaven Dou Royal Academy, although Martial Soul Hall counters his mist with a Spider King 101 102 103.

Later Support

Dugu Bo faces Zhu Zhuyun and a Star Luo Titled Douluo over Su Ze’s killing of an imperial prince. Later, he confirms his own Level 95 breakthrough and welcomes Su Ze’s proposal to evolve Dugu Yan’s martial soul again. He also accompanies Su Ze to the Breaking Clan, where Su Ze stops his use of poison against Yang Wudi and proceeds with a trade instead 128 136 138.
