Having recruited a Daredevil, Bai Jing was in high spirits. He immediately pulled Matt Murdock—Matt from now on—to the riverside warehouse.
The warehouse stood on a pier extending out from 44th Street, reaching straight into the Hudson River.
Notably, from the warehouse entrance, they could see the fighter jets across the way, as well as the former aircraft carrier Intrepid.
Tourists over there could sometimes see people bustling around over here. But who could have imagined that what they were carrying was the most evil thing in the world?
At that moment, a Dodge truck was parked outside the warehouse. Quite a few neatly dressed gang members were moving sacks and boxes of "goods" onto it.
"Where are these being transported? If they're being destroyed, why not burn them with quicklime and dump them into the river?" Matt asked.
That would at least be fairly discreet. No one would notice.
The Hudson River's flow was nearly a quarter of the Yellow River's. Dumping a few tons of washing powder here would basically go unnoticed; it was less than the wastewater discharged by any factory in a single day.
"Why dispose of it secretly?" Bai Jing turned to look at Matt Murdock.
"Obviously, so we don't provoke their anger!" Matt said.
If those gangs found out that so much washing powder had been destroyed outright, they would probably go berserk!
"Then do you think destroying washing powder is a good thing or a bad thing?" Bai Jing asked again.
"Of course it's a good thing!" Matt nodded as if it were only natural.
"Then why should I have to sneak around to do good deeds?" Bai Jing said, then turned and called out, "Have they all been contacted?"
"Yes!" Ryan Daling jogged over, with a police officer beside him.
"Mr. Bai, this is NY State Police Captain Calvin from 44th Street!" Ryan pointed to the White police officer beside him, then to Bai Jing. "This is Mr. Bai, chief adviser to our Order Society!"
"Hello, Mr. Bai. We have felt your company's strong support for our Police Department!" Calvin was broad and powerfully built, with a square, round head. His type was common in the news.
His attitude was neither warm nor cold. After all, Bai Jing was merely an adviser, and Asian at that. If he had been the president, Calvin might have been friendlier.
"As residents of 44th Street, we also have an obligation to maintain public safety on this street. It's simply what we should do!" Bai Jing could not be bothered to exchange nonsense with him. He stepped back and presented Matt beside him. "Allow me to introduce our Order Society's legal adviser, attorney Matt Murdock!"
"Attorney Matt, I've long heard of your name, but I never had the chance to meet you. I never expected you to come to 44th Street!" Calvin looked at Matt with delighted surprise.
Matt was somewhat speechless. He could clearly hear the falseness in the captain's tone, but people could not always do as they pleased in society.
Still, he put on the smile society expected. "A pleasure, a pleasure. I'm nothing compared to an officer like you, Captain Calvin, fighting for the city's order!"
After the two exchanged a round of commercial flattery, Calvin was called away. Matt lowered his voice and asked, "Why are the police here too?"
"It's not just the police!" Bai Jing turned and gestured. Only then did Matt hear numerous vehicles approaching in the distance!
The sound of the cars was soft and low, the engines rumbled deeply, and rapid-fire broadcasts played from inside...
They were fucking news vans!
"We invited reporters from the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, and other major media outlets!" Bai Jing said softly. "Do you think we're still under much pressure now?"
"Uh..." Matt Murdock was stunned. What was this? Tearing open the curtain and letting sunlight shine in directly?
How could this even work?
"Fighting gangs is the police's job, isn't it?" Bai Jing asked with a smile. "I'm a law-abiding company. If I suffer unfair treatment, the federal government will help me too, won't it?"
Matt Murdock was speechless. No, he had thought he was joining to battle wits and courage with Kingpin!
"But those police clearly never did anything..." Watching Calvin excitedly speak with reporters in the distance, Matt looked utterly confused. "If they had truly done their duty, how could Hell's Kitchen have ended up like this?"
"If they don't do their duty, it just means they haven't been paid enough!" Bai Jing said with a smile. "As long as I pay them, and I hold the moral high ground, the police will naturally stand on our side!"
Grandpa Mao once said: Make more friends and fewer enemies.
I want to ban drugs and maintain public safety. I am justice, so everyone and every organization inclined toward justice is naturally my ally.
And if they aren't for now, that's fine. Give them more money, and they will be.
"After years of investigation and undercover work, we successfully obtained evidence of the Gray Squirrel Gang's and Viper Gang's crimes. With the assistance of Order Society Security Company, we successfully took down these two exceptionally evil criminal organizations last night. We seized 7,796 kilograms of various washing powders and arrested 177 drug dealers and criminals. Through the efforts of the NY State Police, these two criminal organizations have been completely wiped out!" On the temporary stage, Captain Calvin spoke excitedly.
He belonged to the police force of Midtown in Manhattan, New York State. His jurisdiction included not only Hell's Kitchen, but also extended beyond Midtown West.
Midtown West was Hell's Kitchen's geographical designation. Its official name was the Clinton District.
Did police officers like this have a sense of responsibility? In truth, they did. It was just that whoever paid them more got more of their sense of responsibility.
Midtown East was economically prosperous and paid more, so their attention had always been focused on Midtown East.
Of course, in America, this was not called bribery. It was called foundation sponsorship.
The gangs in Midtown West also paid money, but first, they had to hand some over to Kingpin. Second, there were state senators, officials at every level, and their own profits were not high. How much could they possibly give the police?
Compared to Midtown East, that little money was practically a drop in the bucket.
After all, right next to Midtown East was Wall Street. Those people were loaded!
Bai Jing had paid enough in one go, instantly wiping out that negligible favor. And helping solve Midtown West's crime problem was something that made the police look good, so of course Calvin had come running eagerly.
No wonder so many rich people liked America. In this country, having money really meant you could do whatever you wanted.
So if you had no money, don't like America. Other than China, no country would treat you well.
"Those 177 people?" Matt asked quietly.
"You don't actually think everyone in those two gangs was clean, do you?" Bai Jing looked at Matt strangely. "We're running a legitimate company. How could we keep them around to cause trouble for me? Of course they have to go to prison for some rehabilitation first!"
Matt truly did not know what to say.
Should he call himself stupid? He was clearly a local. Use his own strength to control a gang and make them turn over a new leaf, then use the gang's funds to bring in the police to maintain public safety—was that hard?
It was not hard at all!
Then why could he not think of such a simple method, while an outsider had managed to do it?
And then there was the argument with Bai Jing just now, where he had been utterly crushed.
He had toiled for half his life and accomplished nothing, yet he was not as effective as someone else working for two days.
Is there something wrong with my intelligence?
For a moment, Matt Murdock actually fell into self-doubt.
What followed was recognition of Bai Jing.
Perhaps, with Bai Jing's intelligence, what he wanted to do really could succeed?
"The NY State Police hereby announces that, starting today, these six blocks are designated as a drug-free demonstration zone. Not a trace of drugs will be allowed to enter, pass through, or leave this area!" On the stage, Calvin made the announcement loudly, while the reporters below immediately cooperated with a flurry of camera clicks.
Afterward, their cameras followed the Dodge truck all the way to the incineration plant. This was a rare spectacle, and the public would definitely love watching it.
Of course, some people would not like it.
Fisk Tower, 47th floor. The bald, muscular Kingpin angrily drew his gun and fired several shots!
The massive forty-two-inch television was immediately blasted full of holes. Yet because goods made in Japan were of such good quality, it kept playing!
"Bai Letian!" Kingpin roared. "How dare you humiliate me like this!"
