Background / History

Ling Ying was an ordinary, socially awkward college student in her previous life. She preferred studying, gaming, and being left alone despite receiving unwanted attention for her appearance. 2

After being brought into Valoran by the Cloaked Figure, she awakened as a Blade Worm. Her original human mind was trapped alongside an Instinct Consciousness that repeatedly forced her body to hunt and consume other Void creatures. The cycle of killing and devouring eventually made her stronger than the surrounding Blade Worms, allowing her to evolve into a higher Void Beast. 2

Cast from the Void Rift into Valoran, Ling Ying struggled to preserve the belief that she was still human. That resolve repeatedly failed against her devouring instincts; she became a feared desert monster known as Mirage Nightmare, slaughtering humans, animals, and Void creatures alike before a group of powerful humans finally defeated her. 2

Instead of dying, Ling Ying was reborn in a human-like body. The Cloaked Figure revealed that she had caused Ling Ying's transmigration and Void transformation, then offered a Void Crystal as a means to evolve. Ling Ying accepted the crystal in pursuit of freedom from instinct and a possible path to redemption, then boarded the Silver Dawn for Piltover. 2

Appearance

Ling Ying's usual form is that of an exceptionally attractive young woman with long purple hair and purple eyes. Her human appearance conceals a Void Creature body capable of increasingly severe transformations. 2 24

  • Her eyes can shift into distinct vertical pupils when her Void nature surfaces. 15 22
  • A black, tentacle-like mark with an eye motif covers much of her neck. 7
  • Void transformation produces purple cracks across her skin, scaly Demon Claws, and violet Void energy. 22 23
  • Her more complete Void Beast form resembles a giant purple mantis with elytra. 32
  • Injuries sustained in transformed states can heal at a visibly accelerated rate. 23

Personality

Ling Ying is deeply burdened by the atrocities committed while her body was controlled by instinct. Her desire to remain human, retain free will, and find redemption shapes many of her choices, including her initial decision to accept the Cloaked Figure's Void Crystal. 2

She is calm, observant, and strategic under pressure. In the Misty Realm, she assessed its rules, distinguished hostile illusions from real people, and chose to investigate the trap rather than panic. 15 She is also highly capable of deception, maintaining false identities and mixing truth with fiction when questioned about her origin. 6 9

Ling Ying is protective toward people she values, particularly Caitlyn and Orianna. She shielded Caitlyn from shadow arrows and accompanied Orianna into dangerous areas of Zaun as Enforcement Department protection. 11 20 However, merging with her Void Consciousness left her prone to excitement and wild instincts in battle, creating a dangerous contrast with her normally careful demeanor. 26

Abilities & Skills

Void Physiology and Transformation

Ling Ying can draw on her Void body's physical power, transforming portions of her body or assuming a full Void Beast form.

  • Manifests Demon Claws reinforced with purple Void energy. 22
  • Possesses high speed, strength, resilience, and visible regenerative ability in transformed states. 23
  • Can become a mantis-like Void Beast when her human form and weapons are insufficient. 32
  • Her human body is more agile but more fragile than her Void form. 11
  • Heavy Void-power use previously risked allowing Void instincts to overwhelm her. 11

Void Flames

Ling Ying channels purple Void Flames through her weapons or directly from her body.

  • Vaporized mutated sea creatures with flame-coated Doran's Blade. 3
  • Used ranged techniques including Flame Burst, Purple Fire Dragon, and Void Fireballs. 4 16 23
  • Could form defensive flame barriers against hostile creatures. 32
  • Her flames can be countered or assimilated by superior shadow-based powers, as demonstrated by Elise. 32

Shadow Magic

After absorbing shadow-related power, Ling Ying developed shadow magic that complements her Void Flames.

  • Summoned a colossal Void Shadow through her body as a medium to connect with the Void. 11
  • Can conjure shadow orbs and manipulate black mist on a small scale. 12 21
  • Can dissolve into black mist to evade attacks or reposition during combat. 16 27
  • Uses Shadow Thorns to restrain targets and can absorb defeated shadow entities into herself. 17
  • Shadow Assimilation initially suppressed her Void power and threatened to turn her into a mindless Shadow Monster. 33

Consciousness Manipulation and Resistance

Ling Ying can operate within her sea of consciousness and resist attempts to seize control of her body.

  • Her mind contains an Instinct Consciousness, black mist, and later a split Void Consciousness. 9 12 24
  • Defeated her split consciousness through a mental battle involving constructed illusions and misdirection. 24
  • Chose integration over destruction, preserving both her individuality and access to more of her Void abilities. 24 26
  • Survived a month-long struggle against Shadow Assimilation and reclaimed partial control over the Shadow Vortex inside her. 33

Swordsmanship and Combat Ability

Ling Ying is a capable melee fighter whose swordsmanship originated from the memories of a mercenary she devoured.

  • Fights effectively with Doran's Blade while maintaining her human disguise. 3
  • Combines sword techniques with Void Flames and shadow magic. 3 15 17
  • Defeated the Space Mage Claire by dispelling her illusionary space and outmaneuvering her. 17
  • Fought Warwick directly in Void-transformed states and severely injured him. 22 23
  • Held off rebel forces alone to keep a Noxian teleportation portal active. 34

Mechanical Design

Ling Ying demonstrates unexpected technical insight despite her cover as an underachieving academy student.

  • Proposed using Hextech Crystals and expanded functions for a Deep Dive Suit. 14
  • Contributed to the design of Model 1 Power Armor alongside Jayce and Viktor. 18
  • Supplied Drained Crystals for power-armor testing. 18

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Void Crystal — a fist-sized crystal provided by the Cloaked Figure to accelerate Void Creature evolution; it resonates with Ezreal's crystal fragment. 2 4
  • Storage Bag — magical pouch left by the Cloaked Figure, used to store weapons, clothing, and other items. 2 6
  • Doran's Blade — a high-quality sword found in her “beginner's gift bag”; it served as her primary weapon until Talon broke it. 3 35
  • Hextech Gunblade — given to her by Camille as an Enforcement Department reward; carried after Doran's Blade was broken. 29 35
  • Forelimb Scythe — a person-sized scythe manifested from the forelimb of her Mantis Void Beast body after merging with her Void Consciousness. 26
  • Duskblade — later-acquired weapon whose passive effect renders her invisible after killing a Void Bug. 39

Relationships

  • Cloaked Figure — the woman who claims responsibility for Ling Ying's transmigration and Void transformation; supplied her Void Crystal and directed her toward Piltover, but concealed her true motives. 2
  • Instinct Consciousness / Void Consciousness — initially a hostile force that drove Ling Ying's Blade Worm body to devour and evolve; Ling Ying later defeated and merged with its split consciousness, retaining her emotions and individuality. 2 24 26
  • Caitlyn — initially her investigator and jailer after Sophie's death, then a trusted ally who arranged Ling Ying's new identity and assigned her to infiltrate Hextech Academy. Their relationship later became strained by Ling Ying's cooperation with the Fierol Family. 9 12 30
  • Ezreal — fellow Void Crystal bearer and early companion in Piltover; he offered Ling Ying a place to stay, while their crystals resonated with each other. 4 6
  • Orianna Revok — Ling Ying's academy roommate and close friend. Ling Ying is highly protective of her and accompanied her to Zaun. 13 20
  • Jayce — academy collaborator on deep-dive suits and power armor; he became wary of Ling Ying after witnessing her loss of control in Zaun. 14 18 25
  • Viktor — collaborator on power armor and ally during the Zaun expedition; he showed understanding after Ling Ying's Void-related loss of control. 18 22 25
  • Oliver Anderson — persistent admirer whose advances Ling Ying finds disgusting; trapped alongside her in Claire's illusionary space, he later comes to respect and rely on her combat ability. 15 17
  • Camille — offered Ling Ying a Gunblade and pressured her into considering cooperation with the Fierol Family by threatening exposure to the Midalda Family. 29
  • LeBlanc — captured Ling Ying after the Tyros incident and coerced her into serving the Black Rose while she struggled against Shadow Assimilation. 33 34
