When Guan Heng climbed out of a sewer with the girl on his back, the sky outside was already full of stars. It had to be past nine. Because of the girl beside him, Guan Heng decided not to return home for the moment, so he found a small hotel.
"Attendant, get me a room," Guan Heng said.
The hotel attendant saw Guan Heng carrying an unconscious girl on his back, and a strange look appeared in his eyes. "What is this—" Guan Heng impatiently stuffed all the money on him into the man's hands. "Quit asking questions. My little sister has a headache. Go prepare some food and water, then take us to a room first."
For the sake of the money, the attendant readily agreed and led them into a room. A short while later, he brought bread, ham, and some orange juice.
With a thud, Guan Heng shut the door and left the attendant outside. The man stood there in confusion. Then, as if he had suddenly remembered something, he turned and ran toward the phone at the front desk.
Using a damp towel, Guan Heng wiped the grime from the girl's face, revealing her delicate features. She was beautiful, with short black hair and yellow skin. She was probably from Huaxia.
"Mmm..." The girl finally woke from her unconsciousness. When she opened her eyes and saw Guan Heng in front of her, she cried, "Ah!" Instinctively, a multicolored ball of energy gathered in her hand again.
"Don't be nervous. Relax. My name is Guan Heng, and I'm not a bad person. Look around first," Guan Heng said, doing his best to soothe her. "This is just a hotel, not a dangerous place. I brought you here."
Seeing that the girl's guard had eased slightly, though the energy ball in her hand had yet to disperse, Guan Heng knew she still had doubts. His eyes shifted, and he smiled. "You're a Mutant, right? Actually, Me Too." To put her at ease, Guan Heng had no choice but to tell a lie. With a thought, he let Iron Fist Power cover his entire body, forming a faint, scorching membrane.
Only then did the girl relax. She naturally felt safer in the presence of one of her own kind.
Smiling, Guan Heng pushed the plate of food before her. "Hungry? Eat up." As he spoke, he broke off a piece of bread and started eating first.
The girl seemed as though she had not eaten in a long time. She grabbed the food and tore into it, swallowing without even chewing.
Guan Heng sighed softly as he watched. He poured a glass of orange juice and handed it to the girl, who had nearly choked herself to death. "Eat slowly. Have some orange juice."
After eating, the girl looked more energetic. Guan Heng had her wash her face, and when she emerged, the little dirty-faced cat had completely turned into a beautiful young girl.
"Can you tell me your name?" Guan Heng beckoned for her to sit down. "You look about two years younger than me, so call me Brother Guan from now on."
"Thank you, Brother Guan. My name is Li Qianhuan." Having eaten Guan Heng's food and believing him to be a fellow Mutant, Li Qianhuan had basically lowered her guard.
Guan Heng nodded with a smile. "Mm, Qianhuan. What a lovely name. Your parents must have hoped you would have countless joys, which was why they gave you that name, right?"
Li Qianhuan's tears suddenly spilled over. Sobbing, she said, "Yes, but they're gone now."
The girl named Li Qianhuan tearfully recounted her past. Born and raised in Beverly Hills, Li Qianhuan had been born into high society, the daughter of two wealthy Chinese immigrant parents, Dr. Li and his wife. In middle school, she had been an outstanding gymnast.
She had always been surrounded by happiness, but then her family was suddenly torn apart. On an ordinary weekend, her parents lost their investments due to stock market turmoil. That same day, two men mistook Dr. Li for a neighbor with the same name and killed both her parents by accident.
After losing her parents, Qianhuan became destitute. Homeless and wandering about, she stole in public squares. When plainclothes officers cornered her, she used exploding energy balls for the first time to escape, and her identity as a Mutant was exposed soon afterward.
After that, Li Qianhuan became even more like a stray dog. She still survived by stealing, but whenever her emotions ran high, energy balls would easily gather in her palms. Then one day, hunters from an anti-Mutant organization found her and pursued her all the way into a dead-end alley in New York City.
A blade scraped against the wall, scattering sparks. The grinning hunter was about to torture Li Qianhuan to death when a burly man who had suddenly appeared killed him with brutal force.
"That man was my Uncle Logan." A faint smile appeared on Li Qianhuan's face, which had endured so much suffering and change. "He was crude, quiet, hot-tempered, and loved to drink, but he treated me very well."
As Li Qianhuan spoke, Guan Heng thought to himself, Logan? Good heavens, isn't that Wolverine from the X-Men? So she's the godniece of a big shot.
The girl continued, "Uncle Logan was going to take me to Australia, but three days ago, we encountered five formidable hunters. Uncle Logan could have broken through immediately, but to cover my escape, he stayed behind to hold them off. I panicked and ran into the sewers, and then I met you, Brother Guan."
"What are you planning to do now?" Guan Heng asked. Li Qianhuan shook her head blankly. With no news of Logan, was she supposed to keep surviving as a pickpocket?
Guan Heng thought for a moment. "How About This. If you don't mind, stay with me for now. I'll find a way to contact Mr. Logan or someone else and send you somewhere safe. Until then, don't go outside. I'll protect you." As a fellow Chinese, Guan Heng felt responsible for protecting Li Qianhuan until she was safe.
Li Qianhuan had just nodded in agreement when the window facing the street abruptly darkened. With a crash, the glass was kicked to pieces, and two shadowy figures leaped inside.
Without a word, they each pulled out two short-barreled rapid-fire guns and opened fire. Rat-a-tat-tat!
"Danger!" Guan Heng kicked the table over to block the bullets, then threw himself over Li Qianhuan to shield her. Thud, thud, thud! The bullets chewed through the wooden tabletop, leaving it riddled with holes in an instant.
"Blood! Brother Guan, you're bleeding!" Several warm drops fell onto Li Qianhuan's face. When she saw that they were red, she immediately cried out.
"Calm down. It's only a minor wound." Guan Heng pressed Li Qianhuan's head down and spoke softly. His shoulder had merely been grazed, and it was nothing serious.
"Heh heh, kid, you're pretty agile." Of the two Killers, one was tall and balding, while the other was a freckle-faced bald man. The bald man snorted. "Now that you're hurt, don't even think about running. Hand over the little Mutant girl, and I might spare your life."
The two casually holstered their emptied submachine guns and slowly drew gleaming batons, moving to surround Guan Heng and Li Qianhuan from both sides.
These two Mutant-hunting hunters had come after receiving a secret tip from the hotel attendant.
"Hand her over to you? Why should I? What do you want to do to her?" Guan Heng kept asking loudly, while secretly signaling Li Qianhuan to crawl toward the door and prepare to escape.
"Let me tell you the truth. We're members of the anti-Mutant church. Mutant heretics like her all deserve to be nailed to crosses and burned alive!" the freckle-faced man shouted, his words brimming with bloodthirsty madness.
Bang! The overturned table burst apart with a Loud Noise. Furious, Guan Heng's entire body was covered in scorching light as he pushed Iron Fist Power to its limit. "You bastards actually treat human lives as worthless!"
The two hunters were startled. They had never expected an injured kid to erupt with such terrifying momentum in an instant. Before they could react, Guan Heng had already rushed in, snatched away their two batons, and casually twisted them into scrap metal.
Guan Heng drove a heavy punch into the tall bald man's left ribs, sending him crashing against the wall while spraying blood. He then swept the freckle-faced man down with a left roundhouse kick and followed up with a punch to the abdomen, shattering his breastbone piece by piece.
In the blink of an eye, both hunters lay Severely Injured on the ground. Guan Heng spat at them. "Trash. You don't deserve to die by my hand."
With that, Guan Heng grabbed Li Qianhuan's hand. "Let's go." The two quickly fled the scene.
Some time later, the sound of heavy boots echoed out. A broad-shouldered, muscular man appeared at the doorway and coldly looked at the two hunters, who were leaning against each other and barely clinging to life.
"You're Log—argh!" Before the hunter could finish struggling out his words, the burly man Made a Move. Unfamiliar claws sliced open the hunter's throat.
"Qianhuan, where are you? These were the last two hunters chasing us, do you know that?" After killing the two hunters, the burly man muttered to himself. He had intended to track them and search for Qianhuan's whereabouts along the way, but he had still arrived a step too late.
Knock, knock, knock! "Peter, are you home?" Guan Heng pounded anxiously on the door.
More than ten seconds later, the door opened. Peter rubbed his Eyes, then exclaimed in surprise, "Guan Heng! Thank goodness! After everyone was evacuated from the Arthropod Exhibition, I kept worrying about you. Are you all right?"
"Don't talk about that yet. Didn't you tell me there was an abandoned attic nearby that no one lived in? Take me there, quickly," Guan Heng said hurriedly.
Though he had no idea what was happening, Peter Parker closed the door Without Hesitation and led Guan Heng to an old attic near his home. After a night of running, Li Qianhuan, exhausted and shaken, fell asleep wrapped in a blanket. Guan Heng, meanwhile, called Peter up to the rooftop.
Looking at the bewildered Peter, Guan Heng suddenly smiled. "Buddy, want to become a Superhero?"
