Background / History
Peter was a high school student when Guan Heng found him being bullied over Aunt May's lunch money. Guan Heng drove off the attackers, and Peter introduced himself shortly afterward. The two became friends after Peter gave Guan Heng a ticket to the Arthropod Science Exhibition. 4 5
Guan Heng recognized the exhibition as the likely origin point of Spider-Man and later recovered the radioactive spider during an attack. He offered it to Peter only after setting three conditions: Peter could not seek exorbitant profit through his powers, could use them only for righteous causes, and had to remain true to himself even if misunderstood. Peter considered the choice overnight and accepted all three conditions. 8
Peter was bitten by the radioactive spider and gained superhuman abilities. Acting on Guan Heng's warning, he stayed close to Uncle Ben and stopped gunmen targeting him; Uncle Ben survived and told Peter, “With great power comes great responsibility.” 8 14
After revealing his powers to Guan Heng, Peter embraced superhero work. He later joined S.H.I.E.L.D. to receive training and avoid accidentally harming others with his still-developing abilities. 14 21
Guan Heng subsequently went undercover at Peter's school as his classmate, neighbor, and S.H.I.E.L.D. supervisor. The pair trained together on New York rooftops, with Guan Heng teaching Peter combat techniques and how to exploit his agility. 22
Personality
Peter is earnest and idealistic. Before accepting the radioactive spider, he insisted that he would not commit evil deeds merely to obtain power, then accepted Guan Heng's restrictions after serious consideration. 8
He is eager to participate in heroic activity and dislikes being left out of dangerous missions, including Guan Heng's battle with Hulk. His frustration stems from wanting to contribute rather than from indifference to the risks involved. 24
Peter is also loyal and protective of his friends. He was deeply concerned over Harry Osborn's connection to the Green Goblin and worked with Guan Heng to rescue Harry while trying to shield him from the truth about his father. 32 33 34
