Background / History

Peter was a high school student when Guan Heng found him being bullied over Aunt May's lunch money. Guan Heng drove off the attackers, and Peter introduced himself shortly afterward. The two became friends after Peter gave Guan Heng a ticket to the Arthropod Science Exhibition. 4 5

Guan Heng recognized the exhibition as the likely origin point of Spider-Man and later recovered the radioactive spider during an attack. He offered it to Peter only after setting three conditions: Peter could not seek exorbitant profit through his powers, could use them only for righteous causes, and had to remain true to himself even if misunderstood. Peter considered the choice overnight and accepted all three conditions. 8

Peter was bitten by the radioactive spider and gained superhuman abilities. Acting on Guan Heng's warning, he stayed close to Uncle Ben and stopped gunmen targeting him; Uncle Ben survived and told Peter, “With great power comes great responsibility.” 8 14
