Background / History

Before arriving in the superhero world, Guan Heng was an apricot-robed Taoist exorcist in his early twenties. He had hunted the last jiangshi on Earth for nearly ten years, eventually destroying it with his self-created Thunderous Lightning Fiery Whirlwind Tri-Curse Fusion: Thunderfire Hurricane Ring. With no undead left to pursue, he considered himself out of work. 1

Iron Man, Thor, and Banner arrived in a time shuttle and brought Guan Heng into their world. Tony forcibly injected him with the original Super Soldier Serum before sending him to Kunlun to train under Daniel Rand. In the Chamber of Spirit and Time, Guan Heng's enhanced body let him master Kunlun's fist techniques in less than a year of subjective training. 1

During the Iron Fist trial, Guan Heng confronted Shou-Lao in the form of a Zombie Dragon—an enemy shaped by his own fears as an exorcist. He blinded the dragon with Fire Talismans, killed it with the ancient Chengying Sword, and absorbed the Dragon Heart Flame, becoming the next Iron Fist. 1 2

After leaving Kunlun, he initially wanted no allegiance to Iron Man or any other organization. His journey toward New York instead led to repeated interventions against criminals, zombies, and mutant hunters, gradually establishing him as a protector despite his insistence on remaining free. 2 4 7

Personality

Guan Heng is fiercely independent. He resents being forced into roles by Tony Stark or Nick Fury and repeatedly insists that people should live according to their own will rather than become another person's tool. 1 4 12

He is also impulsive, competitive, and enjoys provoking powerful opponents to test himself. He taunts enemies in battle, eagerly seeks difficult fights, and views the Hulk as the kind of opponent needed to draw out Chengying Sword's power. 15 23 24

Despite his flippant and sometimes vindictive behavior, Guan Heng consistently protects people in danger. He saves civilians, shields Li Qianhuan from mutant hunters, mentors Peter Parker toward responsible heroism, and offers aid to persecuted mutants. 4 7 8 40 42

Guan Heng is also shrewd in negotiations. When Fury uses Li Qianhuan's safety to pressure him into joining S.H.I.E.L.D., Guan Heng secures Adamantium equipment, written contractual terms, and two supervising officers before signing. 12 13

While trying to reach New York, Guan Heng fights Deathstroke, saves people during the Bone Town zombie crisis, and begins working at Gao's Chinese Restaurant. Protector of Li Qianhuan

After finding Li Qianhuan in the sewers, Guan Heng shelters her from the Church of Hate Mutants and teaches her self-defense and hidden-weapon techniques. He ultimately lets her leave with Wolverine because X Academy is safer than remaining with him in New York. 7 9 14

S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent and Zombie Controller

Fury recruits Guan Heng through pressure and blackmail, but Guan Heng forces favorable terms before joining S.H.I.E.L.D. He handles zombie-related and criminal cases, infiltrates and destroys Hydra's Super Zombie project, and turns Dabao and Er Ni into fully controlled trump cards. 12 13 16 20 21

Exorcist and Heroic Operations

Fury assigns Guan Heng the codename Exorcist and gives him a Guan Gong mask. Guan Heng works alongside Spider-Man against the Green Goblin, battles the Hulk to exhaustion, and uses Chengying Sword's stored power to incapacitate Bruce Banner without killing him. 18 19 23 24 25

Asgardian Blessing

During an Asgard crisis, Guan Heng persuades Loki to stop attempting to kill Odin with the Box of Frost. Odin rewards him with free access to Asgard, spiritual power, essence-sight, and recharged ice-and-fire rings, while Chengying Sword absorbs the divine fire intended for its blessing. 38 39

X Academy Ally

Guan Heng establishes a private base before traveling to X Academy to visit Li Qianhuan and Logan. He saves Azure Dragon from mutant traffickers, openly supports coexistence between humans, mutants, and ability users, defeats Cyclops in a spar, and accepts Professor X's offer to serve as a special appointed teacher. 40 42 44 45

Defense of X Academy

When Magneto's forces attack X Academy, Guan Heng defeats and captures Nightcrawler. The battle awakens Dragon's Roar, a mental-level ability, while Jean Grey senses a related change within herself. 49
