Background / History

Fury directed S.H.I.E.L.D.’s response to the Super Zombie crisis. His agency transmitted dissection data identifying Captain DNA within a captured monster, while Fury’s personnel suffered casualties obtaining it. S.H.I.E.L.D. later lost a hidden facility—and its collected superpowered and mutant blood samples—to a Hydra raid. 1 6

After Guan Heng arrived in the United States, Fury had S.H.I.E.L.D. investigate him. Finding Guan’s prior identity entirely blank and his departure linked to the region near Kunlun Mountain, Fury suspected that he might be the heir to the K’un-Lun Iron Fist and ordered Maria Hill to continue surveillance. 4 5

Fury met Guan at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters and attempted to recruit him to fight Super Zombies. When Guan refused, Fury used Li Qianhuan’s safety as leverage, ultimately securing Guan’s agreement to join while accepting demands for Adamantium equipment, formal written terms, and Fury and Phil Coulson as Guan’s supervising officers. 11 14

As Guan’s director, Fury assigned him missions including undercover work at Peter Parker’s school, investigation of the Green Goblin, the Hulk’s apprehension, and the capture of a teleporting mutant attacker. He also gave Guan the codename Exorcist and a Guan Yu-style mask to protect his identity. 22 25 45 46

Fury is a dignified, middle-aged man who typically wears a sharp suit. He has one eye and projects a fierce, oppressive presence. 11

Personality

Fury is calculating, authoritative, and highly pragmatic. He treats powerful, unpredictable individuals as assets or potential threats to be assessed and contained; his initial interest in Guan Heng centers on determining whether Guan will become good, evil, or something in between. 5

He is willing to manipulate and coerce when he believes S.H.I.E.L.D.’s objectives require it, notably invoking Li Qianhuan to force Guan into negotiations. Yet he can also compromise when faced with a capable opponent, accepting Guan’s costly demands because Guan’s anti-zombie abilities are too valuable to lose. 12 13

Fury has little patience for Guan’s provocation and disrespect, but their antagonism becomes a functional working relationship. He continues assigning Guan critical missions and tolerates his behavior when it serves S.H.I.E.L.D.’s interests. 14 21 22
