Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Human emperor; soul preserved 140 142 His original Ascension ritual was interrupted by Xerath's betrayal. Azir's soul remained in the Tomb of the Emperors until Sivir's blood was used to awaken him.
Ascended 143 After Azir reconciled with Aatrox and his companions, the Sun Disc reconnected with him and released the power reserved for his interrupted ritual. His body was reconstructed by sunfire in about five minutes; a second infusion of solar power completed his Ascension.

Background and History

Azir ruled ancient Shurima before an interrupted Ascension ritual left him dead and the empire destroyed. His soul survived in the Tomb of the Emperors. Xerath, once Azir's closest friend, had secretly arranged the deaths of Azir's father and siblings to put him on the throne; their conflict culminated in Xerath's betrayal during the ritual 143 211 327.

Thousands of years later, Ato used the blood of Azir's descendant Sivir to awaken him. Azir recognized the surviving Darkin Aatrox, Taarosh, and Baalkux, heard what had happened to Shurima, and offered them forgiveness. The Sun Disc then restored his Ascension power. Azir revived the disc and began rebuilding the empire, bringing Nasus back to help govern it 142 143 144 150.

Azir's renewed rule faced threats from the Void, Xerath, the Black Mist, and Mordekaiser's undead. He ultimately killed Xerath with the aid of a barrier prepared by Ato and Baalkux. Despite the betrayal, Azir grieved for the friend who had once taught him much of what he knew 278 327 328 418.

Appearance

Azir can take the form of an armored, hawk-headed Ascended or assume his former human appearance 143 179.

  • Ascended form: Golden armor, a hawk-shaped head, sharp talons, and a golden glow. In battle, he can become a giant over fifty meters tall with eagle-like wings 143 291 418.
  • Human form: Around two meters tall, with darker skin, shoulder-length black hair, large eyes, and a small black mole beside his left eye 179.

Personality

Azir pairs imperial confidence with a stated commitment to changing Shurima. He publicly acknowledges the old empire's mistakes, promises to remove status barriers, and apologizes to Jax for Shurima's treatment of commoners. He also treats the protection of civilians as a priority, even when it limits how freely he can fight 151 152 195 213.

He remains deeply attached to both family and old companions. He plans Sivir's path to Ascension, works to restore Renekton's sanity, and mourns Xerath after deciding that his duty as emperor leaves no other choice 213 249 288 328.

Abilities & Skills

Sand Manipulation and Sand Soldiers

Azir shapes and directs sand across the desert, forming structures, moving people and immense objects, and raising soldiers armed with spears and shields 143 165 178 296.

  • Can create soldiers on demand and receive feedback from them 163 164.
  • Can command up to 500,000 soldiers on Shuriman sands; their numbers remain limited by his available magic 162 165 418.
  • Soldiers feel no pain or fatigue and can reform after being damaged 144 418.
  • His large-scale sand-army ability is strongest where yellow sands cover the ground. Cramped terrain can also restrict his formations 162 165.

Sun Disc and Solar Power

After Ascending, Azir re-established his connection to the Sun Disc, raised it from its ruins, and restored the land around it 143.

  • Used the disc's radiance to heal Nasus and its sunfire to reduce Bel'Veth's remains to ashes 179 213.
  • Can draw on the disc's power to form teleportation arrays 155 161.

Other Magic

  • Transformed the ruins of Noxus's Immortal Fortress into sand, then raised roughly 300,000 soldiers from it 418.
  • Entered Renekton's mind and erased his memories from the three thousand years following his imprisonment, ending Xerath's hold over him 213.
  • Exposed LeBlanc's identity and temporarily prevented her from using magic during talks in Noxus 182.
  • Uses sand and magic to project images to a crowd 163 323.

Relationships

  • Sivir — His descendant, whose blood awakened him. Azir invites her to help rebuild Shurima and works to secure her Ascension 142 144 249 320.
  • Xerath — Former closest friend and teacher; later the betrayer responsible for Azir's family's deaths and the failed ritual. Azir kills him but mourns him afterward 211 327 328.
  • Nasus — Grand Scholar and trusted adviser. Azir brings him back into imperial service and leaves him in charge while traveling 144 150 179.
  • Aatrox — Shurima's Grand General. Azir forgives him after their reunion and later defends his subordinates against Kayle 143 291.
  • Renekton — Ascended warrior whose sanity Azir restores by removing memories of his imprisonment 213 214.
  • Ato — Ally who helps resurrect Azir and advises him on threats and imperial affairs 142 165 278 329.
  • Swain — Noxian leader with whom Azir establishes diplomatic ties and agrees to cooperate against Mordekaiser 183 195.
