First Appearance Chapter 2

Background

Aatrox was one of only two known “perfect Ascended,” alongside the first Shuriman Empress. He served as the Shurima Empire’s foremost general, leading Ascended forces and commanding followers including Anaakca, Taarosh, Baalkux, Styraatu, and Praa. 101 143 152

The Void’s influence gradually damaged his sanity. After enduring its corruption for centuries, he became willing to see the imperial order collapse and later regretted standing aside while Xerath’s actions brought ruin to Shurima. 327

Following his fall into a Darkin, Aatrox was sealed into the Demonic Sword of the Dark. He remained conscious throughout roughly a thousand years of confinement, an isolation that drove his obsession with death and his repeated attempts to lure powerful opponents into killing him. Even the Aspect-powered “angel sisters” could destroy only his temporary body, not his weapon-bound true form. 4 351

Ato discovered the sword shortly after arriving in Runeterra. Though Ato nearly became Aatrox’s puppet during their initial struggle of wills, he prevailed and gained control of the weapon. Ato nevertheless promised to find a method that could grant Aatrox permanent death. 2

Aatrox learns that his destruction requires power equal to or greater than the Sun Disc, the source of his Ascension. The proposed methods are gathering all five World Runes, wielding primordial Void power, or having the Aspect of Creation descend personally. 4 6

Appearance

Aatrox normally exists as the enormous Demonic Sword of the Dark, a weapon that emits a crimson aura. When supplied with sufficient flesh and blood, he can manifest a physical Darkin body. 2 41 380

  • Weapon form — A gigantic demonic greatsword associated with blood-red light and blood magic. 4 327
  • Ascended manifestation — White-and-gold armor, a helmet, holy wings, and a greatsword; this recreates his ancient Shuriman appearance. 152
  • Darkin body — Can be reconstructed from Blood Qi into a towering, skinless giant of flesh with wings. 380
  • Phantom state — Can become intangible, allowing him to evade physical restraints and attacks. 187

Personality

Aatrox is initially consumed by loneliness, rage, and the desire to die. His violence is rooted less in simple bloodlust than in the desperation of being unable to escape his weapon-bound existence. 2 4

Despite his reputation, he retains the instincts of a Shuriman general: he values courage, respects worthy warriors, and is intensely loyal to his former soldiers. He is certain that his direct subordinates will obey his commands even when damaged by Void corruption. 27 41

His time with Ato and the god-tier sheath gradually restores much of his reason. He offers Ato blunt but practical advice, displays tactical judgment, and comes to protect Ato, Riven, and his surviving subordinates. 26 45 283

Aatrox’s improved sanity does not end his wish for death. He considers his perfect Ascension a shackle and refuses any resolution that would return him to eternal imprisonment rather than erase him completely. 101 351 421

Abilities & Skills

Darkin Weapon Physiology

Aatrox’s soul is bound to the Demonic Sword of the Dark. Anyone who takes hold of the weapon faces a battle of wills against him; the weaker consciousness can be consumed and turned into the Darkin’s puppet. 2 129

  • Ato defeated Aatrox in their initial contest, allowing Ato to wield the sword and access Aatrox’s abilities. 2 3
  • Aatrox can assume control of Ato’s body when permitted; during the battle against Viego, he controlled roughly ninety percent of their shared consciousness. 283
  • He cannot freely create a body without adequate absorbed flesh and blood. 3
  • His weapon form can enter an intangible phantom state, rendering physical bindings ineffective. 187

Blood Magic and Flesh Manipulation

Aatrox’s power allows the sword and its wielder to absorb flesh, blood, and even souls, converting them into Blood Qi for healing, body reconstruction, and empowerment. 10 41

  • Can sculpt absorbed flesh into temporary bodies for Darkin weapons, as done for Anaakca. 41
  • Grants potent regeneration; however, the Blade of the Ruined King’s destructive energy can prevent wounds from healing until it is expelled. 282
  • Uses Blood Qi to reconstruct his own Darkin body after exchanging bodies and consciousness with Ato. 380
  • His magical efficiency with absorbed flesh and blood is comparatively poor, forcing him to rely heavily on his immense physical strength. 336

Combat Mastery

Aatrox possesses thousands of years of battlefield experience, which Ato can partially access while wielding the sword. 3

  • Former commander of an Ascended army and an experienced military strategist. 34 45
  • His fighting style is notably more savage and instinctive than Ato’s, forged through direct experience on ancient battlefields. 380
  • Used Deathbringer Stance against Xolaani, releasing a powerful crimson sword slash. 187
  • Used God Slayer form while fighting the corrupted consciousness within Baalkux. 126
  • Raised his output to fifty percent of his Darkin-era strength during his battle with Xolaani. 187

World Ender

Aatrox can grant his host access to the World Ender form, greatly increasing attack power and blood-magic application. 112

  • Transforms the wielder into a massive flesh-and-blood giant. 282
  • Increases physical power enough to contend directly with enemies such as Viego. 282
  • Risks worsening the user’s sanity through Void corruption. 112

General’s Authority

Aatrox can sense familiar Darkin auras and communicate with or command many of his former subordinates. 40 128

  • Awakened Anaakca and ordered her to remain in Freljord to monitor the Abyssal seal. 41
  • Commanded Taarosh to reduce his weapon form to a usable size and serve as Riven’s weapon. 114
  • Called Baalkux and Taarosh to assist in confronting Xolaani and rescuing Praa. 188
  • Awakened Ibaaros through personal memories and appeals to their shared Shuriman past. 207 208
  • His authority is not absolute over Darkin outside his command structure; Ibaaros, his equal rather than subordinate, could not simply be ordered awake. 207

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Demonic Sword of the Dark — Aatrox’s sealed true form, used by Ato as a greatsword and conduit for Aatrox’s blood magic. 2 3
  • God-tier Sword Sheath — A dark-red scabbard forged by Ornn. It can contain the enormous sword despite its size, disguise it as an ordinary weapon, and suppress Aatrox’s maddened emotions. 34
  • Sword Sheath Space — The sheath can house Aatrox and multiple Darkin weapons or manifestations, allowing Ato to carry them without openly revealing their presence. 325 350

Relationships

  • Ato — Host, partner, and the person who defeated Aatrox in their first clash of wills. Ato promises to find a means to kill him, while Aatrox later trusts Ato enough to take control only with his consent. 2 6 283
  • Styraatu — Former secretary and devoted subordinate. Aatrox preserves the remaining fragment of her soul within himself after her sacrifice, and later attempts to confront his feelings for her. 186 351
  • Xolaani — Enemy and former Ascended whose blood magic enslaved or consumed many of Aatrox’s allies. Her obsessive desire to possess Aatrox drives their conflict. 110 186 380
  • Azir — Restored Shuriman Emperor. Aatrox bows before him as the disgraced general; Azir’s forgiveness helps ease Aatrox’s corruption and guilt. 143
  • Anaakca — Loyal vanguard general sealed as a Darkin war spear. She follows Aatrox’s commands even while damaged by the Void’s influence. 41 355
  • Taarosh — Former vanguard and Darkin halberd. Aatrox assigns him to Riven, whose strength he helps enhance. 114 360
  • Baalkux — Former chief mage of the empire. Aatrox attempts to awaken and command him, though Void corruption causes Baalkux to become unstable. 126 152
  • Praa — Darkin dragon fan and subordinate whom Aatrox calls his brother. He leads Taarosh and Baalkux against Xolaani after she takes control of Praa. 188
  • Ibaaros — Old friend and fellow Ascended/Darkin of equal status. Aatrox personally awakens him and urges him to support Azir’s renewed empire. 207 208
  • RivenAto’s ally and Taarosh’s host. Aatrox protects her from Viego and supports her receiving a Darkin weapon suited to her fighting style. 110 114 283
  • Rhaast — Old friend and fellow Darkin who teases Aatrox about Styraatu and his altered circumstances. 350 351
  • Atreus — A formidable former opponent who once defeated Aatrox after Aatrox had nearly killed him. 130 380

Freljord and the God-tier Sheath

Conflict with Xolaani

After Styraatu sacrifices herself to deceive Xolaani, Aatrox retrieves and absorbs the remaining soul fragment from her harp to preserve her essence. 186

Search for True Death
