Background / History
Konoha and the pursuit of immortality
Orochimaru was orphaned at a young age and became Hiruzen Sarutobi’s favored disciple. Hiruzen encouraged his interest in ninjutsu, chakra, and the origin of life, but later obstructed his experiments. Orochimaru’s frustration with mortality and fascination with the White Snake’s eternal life helped drive their growing conflict 400.
His human experimentation with Danzo was exposed, leading to his defection from Konoha. Danzo’s betrayal during that period left their subsequent relationship rooted in mutual exploitation rather than trust 91 271.
Reincarnation complications and recruitment
In the Land of Birds, Orochimaru sought Tsunade’s help with the complications of Living Corpse Reincarnation. Jiraiya pursued him into a mountain forest, where Orochimaru severed one arm and poisoned the other. Might Guy’s arrival forced him back, while Xing Ran treated Jiraiya 159 161 164.
Orochimaru took an interest in Xing Ran’s medical skill and invited him to study under him. Although Xing Ran initially declined, he later entered Orochimaru’s secret base for sustained study and practical training 162 163 196.
Tsunade diagnosed violent fluctuations between Orochimaru’s soul and new body. Their cooperation also involved her demand for a genuine means of resurrection. Orochimaru used the arrangement to influence Xing Ran’s relationship with Tsunade, hoping her reluctance to teach would make him more dependent on Orochimaru 194 196 199 200.
Research collaboration
Xing Ran joined Orochimaru’s cell and gene engineering project after being introduced to a researcher named Shin Uchiha. Orochimaru suggested that combining this work with spiritual and soul research could improve medicines and reduce their adverse effects 213.
Orochimaru also retained an interest in Xing Ran’s independent work. He criticized a new medicine and considered inviting him for further research, while using Kabuto’s participation in Danzo’s Wood Release project to obtain Xing Ran’s later research data 212 270 271.
During the Kirigakure operation, Orochimaru took Kimimaro as a research subject, continuing his search for valuable bloodline abilities and suitable vessels 244.
Early entry into Akatsuki
Pain and Konan approached Orochimaru to recruit him several years earlier than Xing Ran expected from the original timeline. Orochimaru feigned weakness, attempted to seize Deva Path Pain’s Rinnegan, and was repelled by Almighty Push. He then accepted the invitation 324.
His first assignment against the Land of Snow quickly exposed his lack of loyalty. After examining the Third Kazekage clone known as “Magnet,” he escaped through reverse summoning and left a poison sac behind. Pain subsequently challenged his retreat, while Orochimaru criticized the mission’s risks and usefulness 334 336.
Reanimated battles and the Konoha diversion
At Iwagakure, Orochimaru fought Hiruzen with the reanimated First and Second Hokage. Tobirama’s rebellion exposed a control flaw, but Orochimaru later expanded his force and used reanimated Jinchūriki to pressure Jiraiya before escaping 399 403 418 425.
After becoming dissatisfied with Akatsuki, he planned to withdraw to Ryūchi Cave. Obito persuaded him to remain involved by proposing that they ambush Nagato and take one Rinnegan each after the Ten-Tails’ resurrection 447 448 449.
Orochimaru then appeared near Konoha’s Ninja Academy to delay Xing Ran while Akatsuki attacked Sunagakure. He resisted capture through shedding and reanimated defenders, but withdrew after Xing Ran sealed the Third Raikage 450 458 459.
Attempts to seize Nagato’s Rinnegan
Konan’s demand for prisoners suitable for new Paths of Pain gave Orochimaru an opportunity to arrange an ambush with Danzo. His apparent assassination did not eliminate him: he subsequently watched the fighting from concealment, still seeking a chance to take Nagato’s eyes 475 476 485 488.
The appearance of reanimated Hokage caused both Konoha and Akatsuki to believe Orochimaru had openly betrayed the organization. Orochimaru himself was surprised—he had not activated the technique responsible for their arrival. Akatsuki nevertheless continued to need his reanimation expertise 491 513.
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, he deployed a large reanimated army when Akatsuki’s position weakened. After Obito returned with Shukaku’s chakra and Nagato was exhausted, Orochimaru attacked Nagato. His python seized and began dragging Nagato underground, but Obito used Remote Kamui to sever Nagato’s head, killing him during the struggle 524 532 533.
Appearance
- Serpentine anatomy: Can extend his neck, dislocate his jaw, and widen his mouth enough to release another Orochimaru or masses of snakes 161 324 396.
- Long tongue: Uses it to lick his face and even the corner of his eye 430 450.
- Reincarnation-related deterioration: During his rejection crisis, he trembles, shows signs of fever, and wears bloodstained medicinal bandages around his body and arms 192 193.
- White Scale Snake body: By the Rinnegan struggle, the body he presents is formed from densely packed snakes, visible writhing inside his wounds 533.
- Voice and expression: Frequently speaks in a hoarse voice and wears a cold, snake-like smile 324 448 449.
Personality
Orochimaru primarily identifies as a scientist. He values useful research and detests wasted effort, treating immortality as the means to overcome the limited time available to master ninjutsu. His experimental ambitions repeatedly conflict with conventional ethics and village authority 230 336 400.
He is manipulative, patient, and strongly self-interested. He offers knowledge to attract talented recruits, interferes with relationships to increase their dependence on him, and abandons organizational objectives when the personal benefit disappears. His restraint toward Konan reflects calculation rather than submission: he tolerates provocation to preserve access to Nagato 194 200 334 476.
His former bonds are not entirely erased. After mortally wounding Jiraiya, he unexpectedly stays to witness what he believes may be his old friend’s final moments. Such attachment does not prevent him from attacking former teammates or his own teacher 162 400.
Abilities & Skills
Living Corpse Reincarnation
Transfers his soul into another body as part of his pursuit of eternal life 196.
- Adaptation risk: Heavy chakra use and intense physical combat can destabilize the merging soul and body, producing pain and rejection 161 196.
- Genjutsu vulnerability: Flaws associated with his White Scale Serpent leave him highly susceptible to mental illusions; Xing Ran successfully exploits this weakness 447 457.
- Countermeasure: A small snake carrying chakra can repeatedly restore his consciousness after hypnosis 458.
Impure World Reincarnation
Reanimates deceased shinobi and directs them in combat, providing his principal large-scale military advantage 399 430 524.
- Control method: Inserts talisman-bearing kunai into reanimated bodies’ heads 399.
- Early limitations: Restricts the Hokages’ power while the technique remains imperfect; Tobirama’s rebellion demonstrates that control can fail 401 403.
- Selective attention: Fully controls key fighters while leaving less-prioritized summons, such as Mū, with some independent thought 423.
- Reanimated Jinchūriki: Yugito, Yagura, Roshi, and Utakata lose Tailed Beast Transformation but gain the persistent durability of reanimated bodies 425.
- Scaling: Expands from a small elite group to an army containing former Kage, Ninja Swordsmen, and bloodline users 418 524.
- Countermeasure: Xing Ran’s sealing techniques can immobilize and remove his summons from battle 458 459.
Snake Summoning
Uses giant snakes and swarms to defend, overwhelm enemies, or create openings 159 229 396.
- Manda: His giant snake summon, deployed against Jiraiya and Tsunade 159 229.
- Raging Serpent Barrage: Summons two giant snakes to attack as an opponent finishes a technique 159.
- Manda’s Array: Uses numerical pressure against Tsunade, though her enhanced strength destroys the swarm 229.
- Snake King’s Array: Expels countless venomous snakes to hold back groups of Stone Ninja 396.
- Reconnaissance and escape: Small snakes gather information; one returned to Ryūchi Cave enables his reverse-summoning escape 163 334.
- Limit: Snake swarms are particularly effective against numerous weaker enemies, but less useful against overwhelming individual strength 229 396.
Soft Body Modification and Shadow Snake Hand
Reshapes his body into snake-like forms for close-range attacks 161 532.
- Poison Fangs: Extends his neck and attacks with fangs, severing Jiraiya’s arm and delivering a deadly toxin 161.
- Shadow Snake Hand: Transforms his arms into agile pythons capable of seizing a target 532 533.
- Recovery: The python holding Nagato rapidly heals under Konan’s attacks 533.
- Limit: Intense use during reincarnation recovery aggravates his soul instability 161.
Shedding and Survival
Uses replacement bodies and snake-based forms to survive attacks and evade capture 324 458 533.
- Snake Shedding Technique: Leaves an empty skin behind when Xing Ran attempts to seal him 458.
- Replacement emergence: Releases another Orochimaru from his mouth to launch a surprise attack on Pain 324.
- Snake-swarm body: His later body exists between a physical body and a clone, surviving multiple impalements 532 533.
- Combat assessment: Xing Ran describes his direct combat strength as Kage-level, but considers killing him permanently exceptionally difficult 425.
Rashomon and Eight Branches Technique
- Rashomon: Summons a defensive barrier that blocks Jiraiya and Gamabunta’s combined oil-fire attack and later counters a corrosive attack during the Tsunade battle 159 229.
- Eight Branches Technique: An S-rank forbidden technique selected from Konoha’s library alongside Impure World Reincarnation. He prepares to use it against Tsunade but stops before activation 229 230.
- Eight Branches cost: Activating it would ruin his hard-won stable body 230.
