Background / History

Jiraiya had previously taught Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan in the Land of Rain. He later became alarmed by Nagato's transformation and the Akatsuki's actions, viewing the organization as having corrupted a former student. 73 349 364

At age 40, Jiraiya was assigned to lead the Konoha Youth Corps near the Cloud Ninja front. He initially regarded the assignment as an undignified babysitting mission, but accepted after learning that Tsunade had left the village. 69 73

Appearance

During the Youth Corps mission, Jiraiya is a muscular, white-haired man with few facial wrinkles despite being in his prime. He wears loose robes that resemble training clothes over his powerful build and distinctive wooden clogs. 70

  • White, fluffy hair. 70 347
  • Loose robes and a red cloak during combat operations. 70 347
  • Wooden clogs, including in battle. 70 347

Personality

Jiraiya is outwardly irreverent and easily frustrated by inconvenient assignments, but he takes responsibility when lives are at stake. When Two-Tails Yugito endangered the academy students, he immediately prioritized their evacuation and personally confronted the Jinchūriki. 73 74

He is an adaptable battlefield thinker. He can feign exhaustion to manipulate an opponent's behavior, reassess an enemy's unfamiliar abilities, and withdraw rather than pursue when the risks outweigh the benefit. 77 160

Jiraiya remains deeply attached to his former companions and students. He tries to persuade Orochimaru to return to Konoha and repeatedly attempts to understand or redeem Nagato, even after recognizing how far Nagato has changed. 159 348 349

Abilities & Skills

Sage Mode

Jiraiya can enter Mount Myōboku's Sage Mode with the assistance of Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima. The state greatly strengthens him, though its preparation is slow and his balance of natural energy is imperfect. 74 161 474

  • Summons Fukasaku and Shima onto his shoulders to help gather natural energy. 74 161
  • Uses Sage Mode to contend with opponents on the level of a Tailed Beast Jinchūriki and the Paths of Pain. 74 77 365
  • His incomplete mastery gives him toad-like traits; failure to control natural energy can permanently transform a user into a toad and eventually stone. 474
  • Severe injuries can prevent him from entering Sage Mode when he needs it most. 350

Toad Summoning

Jiraiya has a long-standing contract with Mount Myōboku and fights in close coordination with its toads. 74 365 469

  • Gamabunta — his principal giant-toad summon; the two synchronize their movements in battle. 73 74
  • Gama Ken — summoned with a trident and bronze shield during the battle against Pain. 349
  • Fukasaku and Shima — Sage Toads who assist his Sage Mode preparation and combine elemental attacks. 74 366
  • Toad Oil Flame Bullet — combines Gamabunta's oil with Jiraiya's Fire Release for a wide-area incendiary attack. 74
  • Sage Art: Goemon — combines the toads' Wind and Fire Release with Jiraiya's support to unleash a large-scale inferno. 77 366

Combat Ninjutsu

Jiraiya employs varied close-range, ranged, defensive, and deceptive techniques.

  • Great Ball Rasengan — launches a large chakra sphere; the Naraka Path countered it by absorbing its chakra. 347
  • Needle Jizō — hardens and extends his hair into defensive needles capable of impaling attacking giant snakes. 159
  • Wild Lion Dance Technique — controls his hair freely for binding, restraining, transport, and rescue. 348 366
  • Shadow Clone Technique — uses clones for feints and multi-angle attacks. 347
  • Substitution Technique — avoided the Animal Path's ambush by replacing himself with a log. 347

Tactical Leadership

Jiraiya has extensive combat judgment and command experience.

  • Ordered the Youth Corps' evacuation once Yugito's presence made the mission untenable. 74
  • Used a false display of chakra depletion to draw Orochimaru into close combat. 160
  • Fired a unique toad-pattern signal flare to warn Konoha when the Six Paths of Pain advanced. 366
  • Identified the Rinnegan from Kakashi and Itachi's description, connecting it to the Sage of Six Paths. 339

Relationships

  • Tsunade — longtime companion whose departure repeatedly motivates Jiraiya's actions; he remains emotionally attached to her, while she later warns him to be cautious of Yamanaka Xingran. 69 165 442
  • Orochimaru — childhood friend and former comrade. Jiraiya tries to bring him back to Konoha, but their encounters become deadly battles. 159 161 425
  • Nagato — former student. Jiraiya is devastated by Nagato's transformation into Pain and attempts to make him remember Yahiko and Konan. 348 349
  • Yahiko and Konan — Nagato's former companions and part of the group Jiraiya once taught in the Land of Rain. 73 349
  • Naruto Uzumaki — student whom Jiraiya guides toward a Mount Myōboku summoning contract and Sage Mode training. 469 470
  • Yamanaka Xingran — ally in several battles; Xingran helped save Jiraiya after Orochimaru severed his arm and poisoned him, though Jiraiya later becomes suspicious of Xingran's motives. 161 162 472
  • Gamabunta — major summon and battle partner with whom Jiraiya shares strong combat coordination. 73 74
  • Fukasaku and Shima — Sage Toad partners who assist Jiraiya's Sage Mode and Sage Art techniques. 74 366

Conflict with Orochimaru

Jiraiya encounters Orochimaru in the Land of Birds and pursues him into a forest battle involving Gamabunta and Manda. Might Guy drives Orochimaru back, while Xingran reattaches Jiraiya's arm and extracts the poison. Jiraiya later entrusts Xingran with warning Tsunade that Orochimaru may target her. 161 162 165

Investigation of Akatsuki and Pain

After returning to Konoha, Jiraiya reports Tsunade's refusal to return and warns the Third Hokage about a mercenary organization destabilizing the Ninja World. 312

Badly injured and unable to enter Sage Mode, Jiraiya bargains with the Revival Alliance for assistance. Pakura and Retsu create an escape route, allowing him to flee with Han in exchange for 100 million ryō. 350 351

Defense Against the Six Paths of Pain

Jiraiya confronts the assembled Six Paths of Pain, recognizes Yahiko's face among them, and sends Konoha his unique warning flare. He coordinates with the Toad Brothers, Fukasaku, Shima, and the Revival Alliance while attempting to protect Han and delay the Pains. 365 366
