Background / History

Ixialia's elemental legacy predates the Shuriman Empire: its Axiom Towers already stood in the rainforests before the first Sun Disc rose. Heimerdinger describes the civilization as older than Shurima and possibly older than Bandle City itself 6 95.

During the ancient Void conflict, the Ixialian Ascended Ne'Zuk led the construction of Monolith Fortress, drawing on principles of the Vidalion Loom. Its fall was catastrophic, but it curtailed the Void's spread beyond Icathia 83 142.

After Shurima's Great Collapse, Ixialia withdrew into the jungle and sustained its civilization in isolation for more than three thousand years. Its Concealment Spell erased the kingdom from outside records and fostered an intensely conservative, xenophobic culture 2 142.

Qiyana's rise challenged that isolation. During the Elemental Festival, she used the Veil's network to address the entire nation, denounced outdated traditions, and declared her intent to lead Ixialia into a changing world 67. The resulting reform movement brought foreign scholars and craftsmen into the kingdom, but also intensified conflict with conservative nobles and Yuentar factions 117 132.

The activation and disruption of the Concealment Spell drew the attention of Void remnants that retained memories of Ixialia's role in the ancient war. Their assault forced reformists and conservatives to cooperate in the defense of Yishuaoken 143 176.

Geography and Settlements

Society and Government

• King Yuen — The kingdom's ruler and controller of Yishuaoken's central spire; he governs alongside Ixialia's scholarly and noble institutions 40 176.
• Yuenale — The ten royal daughters of King Yuen. Tradition favors older daughters in succession, regardless of talent, though lower-ranked daughters have historically taken the throne 7 41.
• Yuentar — Ixialia's intellectual elite and governing class. They oversee prefectures, lead research, conduct magical education, and wield major political authority 5 49.
• Vidalion qualification — Noble birth alone cannot make someone Yuentar. The Vidalion Loom judges candidates by their knowledge, power, and mental resilience 50 134.
• Knowledge culture — Truth and scholarship are regarded as sacred. Even political rivals generally avoid interfering with purely academic inquiry 59.
• Public education — Magical aptitude assessments are free, and large settlements can train tens or hundreds of thousands of apprentices through Elemental Pedestals 24.
• Isolationists and reformists — Centuries of seclusion created entrenched conservative factions, while Qiyana and her allies advocate exchange with the outside world 67 117.

Vidalion Trials

1. Axiom examination — Candidates present and defend their Yuan Chu Axiom and its constraints before Elder Yuentar while Vidalion verifies their theory.
2. Mana weaving — Vidalion extracts and weaves the candidate's mana; sufficient power produces a robe representing Vidalion.
3. Worldview assessment — The candidate's consciousness merges with Ixialia's Axiom pathways and observes distant regions, testing whether they can judge the outside world rationally 50.

Military and Defenses

• Ixialia has no conventional standing army, but can mobilize immense numbers of Elementalist mages in war; their average level is stated to exceed Level 2 24.
• Road Protectors serve as armed defenders, equipped with enchanted weapons and, during the Void War, reinforced elemental armor 162 182.
• Elemental Masters provide battlefield-scale support, strengthen troops with elemental enhancements, and reinforce threatened lines 182.
• The national defensive spell can reshape terrain on a massive scale. During the Void invasion, it raised two mountains to crush emerging burrowers 182.
• Ixialian warriors use Axiom Ring Blades and short swords designed for jungle fighting and elemental conduction 8 182.
• Piltover craftsmen and Ixialian resources were combined to produce Hextech defensive cannons during the Void War 176 182.

Foreign Relations

• Ionia — Ixialia recognizes Ionia as culturally distinct and unusually isolated from continental conflicts. Yuan Chen's Ionian origin made him more acceptable than most foreigners, though he was never fully considered Ixialian 6 118.
• Piltover and Zaun — Piltover's mining expansion near Ixialian territory provoked conflict, particularly because of its exploitation of forests and raw Hex Crystal deposits. Later, scholars and craftsmen from Piltover and Zaun joined formal exchanges with Ixialia 45 132.
• Noxus — Ixialians view Noxian expansionism and martial culture with distrust. Noxian forces later confronted Ixialian masters during the conflict at the Sun Gate 4 134.
• Icathia — Ancient relations were hostile due to Ixialia's role during the Icathian conflict, but the Void invasion created a shared enemy and brought Jax into cooperation with Ixialia's defenders 142 174 206.

3. Qiyana's reform movement — Qiyana shelters Yuan Chen, seeks his recognition, and uses the Elemental Festival to challenge Ixialia's isolationist order 42 67.
