Background

Yuan Chen was an Ionian Dancer Master who trained in traditional war dances out of anxiety over Ionia's future. He knew that the island's peace would eventually be broken by invasion, but the elders of the Eternal Hall rejected his calls for preparation as a threat to harmony 1 17.

At age three, he awakened a “golden finger” based on game software he had created in a previous life. It allows him to inspect hidden data and measure his own progress, helping him avoid wasted training and develop far faster than his peers 2.

While traveling by fleet, Yuan Chen was swallowed by a Hoarding Sea Serpent. Nila killed the creature, but Oshirresh—the demon associated with joy and pleasure—became interested in Yuan Chen's soul and placed the Joy Curse upon him.
