Background / History
Piccolo’s training and Namek
Before his death, Son Goku asks Piccolo to train Gohan because of the unusual power Gohan displayed as a child. Gohan initially resists the harsh regimen, but gradually begins taking it seriously. 46
During the Namek Dragon Ball search, Gohan remains behind to protect Bulma while Krillin and Yamcha investigate the scattered Dragon Balls. 54 When Betkas tortures and kills Krillin, Gohan attacks in grief and rage, releasing a white aura and power estimated near 3.5 million. Betkas still defeats him easily, exposing the gap between Gohan’s latent bursts and controlled strength. 70
Super Saiyan and the Cell conflict
After Future Son Goten warns that Broly killed a future Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, Goku resolves to train Gohan for the coming threat. 79 80 Gohan subsequently becomes a Super Saiyan at an early age. 87
He protects Mount Paozu from Android 16, transforming immediately when his home and Chi-Chi are threatened. His rage temporarily multiplies his speed, though Android 16 later notices that Gohan slows after calming down. 103 104 Training alongside Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber greatly improves Gohan’s strength and brings him into a full-power Super Saiyan state. 113
During Cell’s attempted destruction of Earth, Gohan reaches Super Saiyan 2 through anger. He sends Cell’s massive energy sphere away from the planet, then overwhelms the ki-depleted Cell in close combat. 122 125 126
Broly and declining training
Gohan joins Goku, Vegeta, and Betkas against Broly as a Super Saiyan 2, but Broly easily overpowers the group. 135 136 Betkas’s Super Saiyan God power temporarily lets Gohan experience Super Saiyan 3, giving him a path toward eventually achieving the form through training. 138
After a period of peace, Gohan focuses on studying rather than combat. He retains Super Saiyan 2 but admits neither reaching Super Saiyan 3 nor maintaining his previous training pace. 174 175 181 During this period, he secretly operates as the Great Saiyaman until Videl discovers his identity and pressures him to enter the World Martial Arts Tournament. 179
Phantom Demon and Mystic Gohan
When the Phantom Demon attacks Earth, Gohan battles it despite its ability to turn into gas and evade attacks. Tarble rescues him from the creature’s tail, and Ginyu later joins their effort. 195 198
Refusing to wait for stronger fighters to return, Gohan asks Tarble and Ginyu to stall the Phantom Demon while he forces a Super Saiyan 3 breakthrough. He injures the enemy with a Spirit Bomb and Kamehameha, but collapses after exhausting his energy. 198 199 200
Gohan later trains with East Supreme Kai and Old Supreme Kai in the Supreme Kai Realm, where his potential is unlocked into Mystic Gohan. In this state, he swiftly defeats the Phantom Demon and is confident that its vaporized movement cannot overcome the difference in their power. 201 204
Majin Buu aftermath
Gohan attempts to assist against Super Buu and Kid Buu, but recognizes that enemies of that level exceed his strength; Kid Buu defeats him with a single counterattack. 210 216 After the conflict, he makes Shenron revive the Earthlings killed by the Phantom Demon, Janemba, and Majin Buu, excluding evildoers. 221
Appearance
During Earth’s peaceful period, Gohan is described as a black-haired youth of around fifteen who spends his time studying among large stacks of books. 174
- Wears an orange gi when leaving home for combat or King Kai’s assignments. 175
- As a Super Saiyan, his hair turns golden. 87
- As a Super Saiyan 2, his hair rises further, his muscles enlarge slightly, and blue lightning crackles around his golden aura. 122
- Super Saiyan 3 gives him a mass of golden hair, green eyes, blue lightning, and an aura powerful enough to shake Earth. 199 200
- Mystic Gohan manifests in his normal-state form rather than through a visible Super Saiyan transformation. 201
Personality
Gohan is compassionate and protective, repeatedly placing Earth’s safety and the lives of others above his own condition. Krillin’s death triggers his rage, and he refuses to abandon the Phantom Demon crisis even when waiting for Goku and the others would be safer. 70 198
His power is strongly linked to emotion. Threats to his family or friends can make him far faster and stronger than usual, but that surge is less reliable once he regains his composure. 103 104 He can also be hesitant outside battle, as shown by his uncertainty over Shenron’s wish, but accepts responsibility once given a clear course of action. 221
Although he is capable of intense dedication, Gohan’s years focused on study leave him rusty and less sharp in combat. He recognizes this weakness when attempting to reach Super Saiyan 3 under pressure. 178 198
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Transformations
Gohan’s growth is driven by unusually high latent potential and emotional breakthroughs.
- Super Saiyan 2 — Provides the power needed to redirect Cell’s energy sphere and defeat the exhausted Cell. 122 125
- Super Saiyan 3 — Vastly increases his power but consumes energy so quickly that he cannot initially sustain it after major attacks. 199 200
- Mystic Gohan — His potential-unlocked state exceeds his Super Saiyan 3 and gives him the speed and power to overwhelm the Phantom Demon. 201 204
Ki Techniques
Gohan uses several energy attacks in combat.
- Masenko — Fires it defensively at the Phantom Demon’s descending palm. 195
- Kamehameha — Uses powerful versions against the Phantom Demon; the Super Saiyan 3 version severely injures it but drains him back to normal. 198 200
- Spirit Bomb — Launches one immediately after reaching Super Saiyan 3. 199
- Flight and Instant Transmission — Flies in combat and uses Instant Transmission with Tarble to evade the Phantom Demon’s stomp. 196
Latent Potential
Gohan can release power far beyond his ordinary performance when emotionally provoked.
- Krillin’s death produces a massive rage-fueled surge, though it remains insufficient against Betkas. 70
- Anger at Android 16’s attack on his home multiplies his speed several times over. 103
- His potential unlock later converts this unstable promise into Mystic Gohan’s controlled power. 201
