Yao Guangzhi came from a comparatively humble background: his father was an Instructor Martial Master at a True Martial Sect branch school. After Yao Guangzhi became established in the sect, his father rose to become that branch school's head. 108

He became Yi Feng's second disciple in the True Martial Sect's Apothecary Hall. By the time of the demon and exotic beast invasion, he and eldest senior brother Xun Yi were Advanced Alchemists assigned to refine medicine behind the front lines rather than fight at the vanguard. 107 121

Yi Feng later arranged repeated matchmaking meetings for him with female disciples. The experiences left Yao Guangzhi disillusioned with marriage: some candidates wished to focus only on the Martial Path, while others attached extensive material and family-related conditions. Yao Guangzhi is sincere, protective, and emotionally direct with his fellow disciples. He worries openly about Chen Mo's safety, supports him during the war, and later takes pride in Chen Mo's achievements rather than resenting his overwhelming growth. 122 271

He is devoted to alchemy and not especially interested in combat. Although his cultivation was higher than Chen Mo's at one point, Yi Feng considered Chen Mo the stronger fighter because Yao Guangzhi and Xun Yi concentrated their efforts on pill refinement instead of actual combat. 107
