Itachi came home from work and found his father, Fugaku Uchiha, waiting on the living room sofa.
"Father."
Itachi bowed respectfully.
"There's no need for so many formalities between father and son."
Fugaku Uchiha gestured for his eldest son to sit down, then asked with a smile, "How's that matter I asked you to take care of coming along?"
"Well..." Itachi looked hesitant.
Fugaku Uchiha frowned and said, "Itachi, have you forgotten about Sasuke?"
Itachi shook his head and explained, "Father, over the past six months, I've read through all the materials that only squad leaders are authorized to access, but I haven't found any information related to the Mangekyō Sharingan."
At least he hadn't just pretended to do it... Fugaku Uchiha nodded slightly and stroked his chin, murmuring, "Could a squad leader's clearance still not be enough?"
Itachi fell silent.
He was only a temporary squad leader. His father couldn't seriously expect him to compete for the Anbu Captain position, could he?
The living room fell quiet. A moment later, Fugaku Uchiha suddenly remembered something important and asked, "I heard Gekko Hayate is back?"
Itachi nodded. "Yes."
"Does that mean your time as Temporary Captain is almost up?" Fugaku Uchiha asked with a frown.
If Itachi remained a squad leader, even a temporary one, there was still a chance he could access the Anbu's higher-level secrets. But if he was demoted straight to an ordinary member, there'd be no hope at all!
Itachi said expressionlessly, "I asked Captain Hawk. He said the Fourth Hokage has no plans to send Captain Hanfeng back to the Anbu."
That was a relief... Fugaku Uchiha relaxed and asked calmly, "Do you know why?"
"I suspect the Fourth Hokage wants Captain Hanfeng to become Team Seven's Jonin Instructor," Itachi replied.
