The White Cloud Sect has occupied the White Cloud Mountain Range for a thousand years. Commoners regard the depths of the range as a forbidden gathering place for “immortals” and demons; in reality, its apparent immortals are sect cultivators, while its monsters are spirit beasts sustained by increasingly dense Spirit Energy deeper in the mountains 11.

Its founding ancestor had served under a Spirit Transformation Venerable. Although that ancestor could enter an ancient mighty figure's Abandoned Mansion because he was a Nascent Soul cultivator, the Venerable could not; the spatial fragment would collapse if a Spirit Transformation cultivator entered. The ancestor recovered treasures for the Venerable and ultimately received the White Cloud Mystic Scripture and Dragon-Capturing Hand, providing the sect's foundational inheritance 939.

The sect annually recruits immortal seedlings. New arrivals undergo the Heart-Questioning Array, which compels truthful answers about their origins, motives, and intentions toward the sect. Those accepted are exempted from menial labor for one year, though disciples with superior spiritual roots receive preferential selection by the sect's Hall Masters 11 12.

Following Ancestor Zhong's death, Cheng Buzheng returned to stabilize the sect, lift its internal lockdown, compensate disciples for losses, and investigate the death.
