Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Seventh Realm 194 Ascends to the Middle Thousand Provinces as a Seventh Realm cultivator, where he is markedly weaker than many fellow ascendants.
Eighth Realm 209 Enters the First Gear of the Wanjie Thunder Furnace and breaks through, gaining access to a domain.
Ninth Realm 217 Reaches the Ninth Realm during the two months preceding the Tongtian City Grand Competition.

Background

Jiang Yan was raised by his mortal father after his mother, a woman from the Upper Realm, was forcibly taken away by her family. Before her departure, she sealed the Seven Luminaries Spirit Nourishing Pagoda into infant Jiang Yan, leaving him both a means to cultivate and a hope for their eventual reunion 190 192.

He becomes an Outer Disciple and Body Cultivator of Biluo Holy Land. When Xiao Duantian attempts to claim Saintess Tao Ziyan as his personal maid, Jiang Yan intervenes despite knowing he cannot match the Divine Dynasty heir's Eighth Realm cultivation. He is severely wounded, yet still activates his Mysterious Thunder Divine Ability to resist 186.

Qin Wangchuan and Ye Jianwei save the Biluo Holy Land disciples from Xiao Duantian. Qin subsequently introduces himself to Jiang Yan as a Wen Dao Palace talisman cultivator and invites him to travel to the Middle Thousand Provinces 188 189. Jiang Yan accepts, seeking strength enough to find his mother, but refuses to let Qin Wangchuan solve that goal for him outright 193 205.

Personality

Jiang Yan is courageous and protective. He risks his life for Tao Ziyan twice, first by confronting Xiao Duantian and again by trying to shield the others from the latter's attack 186 188.

Though frequently insecure about his cultivation, he is persistent and quick to recover his fighting spirit. He accepts Qin Wangchuan's punishing training, repeatedly endures defeat, and treats every challenger as an opportunity to improve 206 212.

He is also notably naive and imaginative, repeatedly comparing his circumstances to storybooks and wondering whether he possesses a hidden dragon-shaped birthmark, ancient talisman, or special destiny 196 197. His simplicity often leads to misunderstandings, including his later reputation among miners as a “demon” who trains men into cauldrons 255.

Abilities & Skills

Body Cultivation and Combat Instinct

Jiang Yan is a body cultivator whose greatest natural strength is his instinctive close-quarters combat.

  • He can react and counterattack before consciously processing an opponent's moves, an instinct Feng Qingjue identifies as a high state of body cultivation 225.
  • His resilience allows him to continue fighting through severe injuries and spiritual-energy instability 186 203.
  • His instincts and hardened body allow him to defeat the body cultivator Sun Yu despite Sun Yu's superior speed and initial pressure 225.

Mysterious Thunder Divine Ability

A thunder-based body-strengthening inheritance taught by Lei Shi, one of the remnant souls within Jiang Yan's pagoda.

  • Activating it covers his body in purple thunder patterns and greatly strengthens his physique 186.
  • It is described as capable of reaching a state where “one force could break all techniques” 186.
  • Jiang Yan initially refuses to hand it over without permission because he considers it a sect inheritance 191.
  • Lei Shi later assists Jiang Yan directly during his spar against Qin Wangchuan, empowering his lightning and Qianqiu Hegemony Fist 233.

Wanjie Thunder Furnace

A rankless cultivation method created by Qin Wangchuan and given to Jiang Yan to replace his Mysterious Thunder True Body 205.

  • Its principle is to use the body as a furnace, tempering it with thunder and fire while converting spiritual energy into stored blood and qi 207.
  • Its First Gear manifests blood-colored lightning, drastically raises Jiang Yan's vitality and physical output, and helped him reach the Eighth Realm 209 222.
  • Jiang Yan uses the technique to defeat Xiao Yun and Sun Yu in the Tongtian City Grand Competition 222 225.
  • Jiang Yan recognizes that the technique's power—not his own strength alone—was central to his victories 223.

Qianqiu Hegemony Fist

A Quasi-Emperor-grade fist technique created by Qin Wangchuan and bestowed alongside the Wanjie Thunder Furnace 205.

  • Jiang Yan employs it in his full-force challenge against Qin Wangchuan 233.
  • When enhanced by Lei Shi's possession, the technique produces deep-purple lightning and power exceeding Gu Tianye's at that moment 233.
  • Despite its force, it cannot damage Qin Wangchuan's Soldier Puppet 233.

Seven Luminaries Spirit Nourishing Pagoda

An Upper Thousand Provinces treasure sealed into Jiang Yan's origin by his mother 192.

  • Its primary functions are nourishing souls, concealing aura, and accelerating time within the pagoda for cultivation 192.
  • It houses several ancient remnant souls, including Lei Shi/Lei Gang, Elder Dan, and a Formation Master 192.
  • The pagoda's concealment is normally inseparable from its host's origin, but Qin Wangchuan is able to detect and remove it effortlessly 192.

Equipment / Items

  • Seven Luminaries Spirit Nourishing Pagoda — A soul-nourishing and cultivation-assisting treasure integrated into Jiang Yan's body by his mother 192.
  • Devilish Son token — Worn while Jiang Yan and Wen Dao Palace disciples pose as members of the Blood Evil Sect during their mining operation 254.

Relationships

  • Qin Wangchuan — Jiang Yan calls him “Eldest Brother” and regards him as his mentor. Qin trains Jiang Yan through battle, provides cultivation methods and pills, and intends to use his growth to challenge the Middle Thousand Provinces 190 205 206.
  • Tao Ziyan — His Biluo Holy Land Senior Sister. Jiang Yan defends her from Xiao Duantian and later refuses to bring her to the Middle Thousand Provinces because he cannot guarantee her safety 186 193.
  • Lei Shi / Lei Gang — A thunder-wielding remnant soul within the Seven Luminaries Spirit Nourishing Pagoda who taught Jiang Yan the Mysterious Thunder True Body and can temporarily empower him 186 192 233.
  • Ye JianweiQin Wangchuan's companion who helps save Jiang Yan from Xiao Duantian; she observes his training and is amused by his blunt humor 188 206.
  • Xiao Yun — A Wen Dao Palace disciple who initially faces Jiang Yan in the Grand Competition, then later escorts and instructs him after Qin Wangchuan leaves for the Upper Thousand Provinces 222 234.
  • Gu Tianye — A fellow competitor and sparring partner who joins Jiang Yan in challenging Qin Wangchuan; both are decisively defeated 233.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Biluo Holy Land Incident

Jiang Yan's defense of Tao Ziyan establishes him as a reckless but loyal lower-realm disciple. His willingness to confront Xiao Duantian draws Qin Wangchuan's attention, who identifies him as a Person of Destiny 186 189.

Journey to the Middle Thousand Provinces

After learning more of his mother's disappearance and the pagoda inside him, Jiang Yan follows Qin Wangchuan through the Heaven-Reaching Tower into the Tongtian Realm. The experience exposes him to the brutal hierarchy of the Middle Thousand Provinces, where his Seventh Realm cultivation is treated with contempt 192 193 194.

Qin Wangchuan's Training

Qin Wangchuan gives Jiang Yan the Wanjie Thunder Furnace and Qianqiu Hegemony Fist, then sets up a talisman stall in Tiebei City: anyone who defeats Jiang Yan receives a talisman for free. The arrangement forces Jiang Yan into continual combat and rapid growth 205 206.

Tongtian City Grand Competition

Jiang Yan enters the competition under Wen Dao Palace's name, despite not yet being a member. He reaches the Ninth Realm, defeats Xiao Yun through the Wanjie Thunder Furnace, overcomes Sun Yu through instinctive body cultivation, and reaches the top four before facing Feng Qingjue 217 222 225 226.

Wen Dao Palace

After Qin Wangchuan departs for the Upper Thousand Provinces, Jiang Yan is taken in by Xiao Yun and learns that Qin Wangchuan founded Wen Dao Palace himself 234. He later joins Wen Dao Palace's operation against the Blood Evil Sect, though his innocent conduct and misunderstandings earn him an infamous reputation among the miners 254 255.

Trivia

  • Jiang Yan initially believed Qin Wangchuan was merely a fringe talisman cultivator from Wen Dao Palace 208.
  • He repeatedly imagines himself as the protagonist of a storybook, even attempting to check his body for a dragon-shaped birthmark 196 197.
  • His answer to Qin Wangchuan's question about combat insight was that his opponent had not bathed for at least a month, briefly making Ye Jianwei laugh 206.
