Background and History
Pei Ji was born from a brief relationship between the Devil Master Xie Yu and a mortal woman. Xie Yu abandoned them after using Pei Ji's mother to obtain her clan's cultivation techniques. She redirected her hatred toward Pei Ji, treating him as a reminder of his father and repeatedly abusing him throughout his childhood. She named him “Ji,” a name he understands as a curse tied to the hatred surrounding his birth 1 319.
He spent much of his childhood confined in a dark cellar, isolated from other children because of his Devil Race bloodline. After his mother died, he survived alone and continued to face poverty, violence, and discrimination 30 319. The abuse left him deeply ashamed of his heritage and convinced that he was inherently monstrous 341.
After joining the Xuanxu Sword Sect, Pei Ji began as an outer sect disciple. His Devilish Qi suppressed his sword intent during the entrance examination, and his roommates Shen Anqiao and Nie Zhi repeatedly bullied him for his bloodline and sudden success in the sect tournament 2 3. His performance against Chen Zhao drew Tian Xianzi's attention, leading Tian Xianzi to accept him as a personal disciple 10 11.
Appearance
Pei Ji is a tall, lean young man with the compact strength of a lifelong swordsman. He usually wears black robes and keeps his long black hair loose or tied back, emphasizing his cold complexion and severe bearing 91 155 279.
- Upturned phoenix eyes with pitch-black pupils and a naturally alluring shape, usually hardened by a hostile gaze 10.
- A conspicuous tear mole beneath one eye, often set off by the redness around his eyes when Devilish Qi surges 5 224.
- Cold-white skin, sharp facial features, and rose-colored lips 155.
- Extensive old whip marks, burns, sword wounds, and other scars across his arms and torso from childhood abuse and later battles 134 278.
- Callused hands from sword practice and years of survival work 113.
Personality
Pei Ji is withdrawn, suspicious, and blunt. Having grown up expecting cruelty from others, he avoids physical contact, dislikes crowds, struggles with casual conversation, and often responds to concern with coldness or self-deprecation 10 211 282. He is especially sensitive about his scars, bloodline, and perceived lack of worth 278 283.
His harsh exterior conceals a rigid sense of repayment and protectiveness. He does not like owing favors, silently remembers acts of kindness, and repeatedly places himself in danger to shield Ning Ning and others 67 97 199. Around children and those he trusts, he shows exceptional patience, gentleness, and awkward tenderness 118 221.
Pei Ji is also notably inexperienced in romance and social customs. He interprets metaphors literally, becomes easily embarrassed by intimacy, and often fails to recognize his own jealousy or affection until Chengying points it out 166 213 357.
