Background / History

Donquixote Family and underworld empire

Doflamingo led the Donquixote Family, a Shichibukai-backed criminal organization operating human auctions, arms sales, and Artificial Devil Fruit production. The Human Auction House in Sabaody's Area 1 was one of his assets, while Caesar manufactured SAD on Punk Hazard for the Family's SMILE operation. 12 15 144

He had personally experienced leaving the Celestial Dragons and later partially returning to their sphere of authority. This history deepened both his understanding of their power and his desire to wield the authority they represented. 60

Buggy's raid on the Area 1 auction house exposed Doflamingo's connection to the slave trade. Buggy later named the Donquixote Family as the sponsor of his live Celestial Dragon auction, publicly isolating Doflamingo among the Shichibukai and damaging his business. 15 27 77

Conflict with Buggy and Vergo

After learning that Buggy had entered the New World, Doflamingo vowed to kill him personally for repeatedly humiliating the Donquixote name. 60

During their confrontation on a Marine warship, Doflamingo killed Vice Admiral Doberman while Vergo was present, exposing Vergo's identity as his embedded Marine agent. He attacked Buggy with Thread Attack, Thread Saw, and Parasitic Thread, but Buggy's fragmented body resisted being permanently restrained. 77 78

Vergo's loyalty collapsed when he remembered that he and Trebol had surrendered a Devil Fruit to the child who became Doflamingo. Believing the fruit should have been his, Vergo turned on Doflamingo. Doflamingo ultimately killed him, then briefly proposed an alliance with Buggy to overturn the World Government's order. 80

Purges within the Family

Doflamingo regarded betrayal as unforgivable. When Trebol investigated Vergo's death against orders, Doflamingo killed him rather than risk the investigation leading back to himself. 149

Fall of Dressrosa

Buggy infiltrated Dressrosa, turned Doflamingo's executives against him, and seized his throne. Faced with his “family” denouncing him as a thief, Doflamingo responded by transforming them into string cocoons and summoning the White Thread Devil. 160 161

He released the Birdcage over Dressrosa to prevent his remaining family from escaping and fused with the White Thread Devil to remove the possibility of betrayal. As his sanity deteriorated, he attacked and absorbed his own subordinates into his thread-controlled force. 163 165

In his battle with Buggy, Doflamingo consumed the Mera Mera no Mi and became an unstable flame-and-thread Mummy. The resulting creature attacked Lucci before fleeing the destroyed Plateau of Kings. 166 167 168

Later captivity
