Background / History
Donquixote Family and underworld empire
Doflamingo led the Donquixote Family, a Shichibukai-backed criminal organization operating human auctions, arms sales, and Artificial Devil Fruit production. The Human Auction House in Sabaody's Area 1 was one of his assets, while Caesar manufactured SAD on Punk Hazard for the Family's SMILE operation. 12 15 144
He had personally experienced leaving the Celestial Dragons and later partially returning to their sphere of authority. This history deepened both his understanding of their power and his desire to wield the authority they represented. 60
Buggy's raid on the Area 1 auction house exposed Doflamingo's connection to the slave trade. Buggy later named the Donquixote Family as the sponsor of his live Celestial Dragon auction, publicly isolating Doflamingo among the Shichibukai and damaging his business. 15 27 77
Conflict with Buggy and Vergo
After learning that Buggy had entered the New World, Doflamingo vowed to kill him personally for repeatedly humiliating the Donquixote name. 60
During their confrontation on a Marine warship, Doflamingo killed Vice Admiral Doberman while Vergo was present, exposing Vergo's identity as his embedded Marine agent. He attacked Buggy with Thread Attack, Thread Saw, and Parasitic Thread, but Buggy's fragmented body resisted being permanently restrained. 77 78
Vergo's loyalty collapsed when he remembered that he and Trebol had surrendered a Devil Fruit to the child who became Doflamingo. Believing the fruit should have been his, Vergo turned on Doflamingo. Doflamingo ultimately killed him, then briefly proposed an alliance with Buggy to overturn the World Government's order. 80
Purges within the Family
Doflamingo regarded betrayal as unforgivable. When Trebol investigated Vergo's death against orders, Doflamingo killed him rather than risk the investigation leading back to himself. 149
He remained outwardly protective of his “family,” but treated their loyalty as a weakness that could be exploited. He tortured Violet for withholding information about Buggy and used King Riku III as a target for his Thread Saw while searching for Joker's whereabouts. 159 160
Fall of Dressrosa
Buggy infiltrated Dressrosa, turned Doflamingo's executives against him, and seized his throne. Faced with his “family” denouncing him as a thief, Doflamingo responded by transforming them into string cocoons and summoning the White Thread Devil. 160 161
He released the Birdcage over Dressrosa to prevent his remaining family from escaping and fused with the White Thread Devil to remove the possibility of betrayal. As his sanity deteriorated, he attacked and absorbed his own subordinates into his thread-controlled force. 163 165
In his battle with Buggy, Doflamingo consumed the Mera Mera no Mi and became an unstable flame-and-thread Mummy. The resulting creature attacked Lucci before fleeing the destroyed Plateau of Kings. 166 167 168
Later captivity
Doflamingo later reappeared when Crocodile brought him before Buggy during Buggy's war preparations. Buggy then chose to use him as a living experiment, administering a third Devil Fruit to study multi-fruit compatibility. 212 213
Appearance
Doflamingo is a muscular man who dresses flamboyantly, usually wearing pink sunglasses, cropped trousers, spiked shoes, and a pink feathered coat. 77
- Pink cat-eye sunglasses, one of which was cracked during Buggy's Dressrosa attack. 159
- Spiked shoes used both as part of his appearance and in combat. 77 78
- Muscular hands marked by visible veins when angered. 60
- Following devil fusion, exposed flesh becomes interwoven with white threads and additional hollow eye sockets appear above his own. 163
- His Mummy form combines red threads, white string, flames, and multiple overlapping consciousnesses. 167
Personality
Doflamingo is proud, theatrical, and intensely status-conscious. His identity as a Celestial Dragon is central to his self-image, even as he resents the world that rejected him. He considers his lineage proof that he should stand above others and reacts violently when that belief is challenged. 60 166
He is patient enough to negotiate when his interests demand it, as shown by his offer to cooperate with Buggy after Vergo's betrayal. However, humiliation—especially Buggy's laughter and mockery—quickly overrides that restraint. 77 80
“Family” is both his most cherished ideal and his greatest obsession. He calls loyal followers family, but interprets disobedience as betrayal and ultimately chooses to destroy his own organization rather than remain vulnerable to abandonment. 149 163 165
Abilities & Skills
Ito Ito no Mi
Doflamingo's String-String Fruit creates and manipulates extremely durable white threads. His awakening allows him to transform surrounding matter into strings. 78 161
- Thread Attack — Fires a thread fast enough to pierce Buggy's body. 77
- Thread Saw — Produces serrated thread for slow, deliberate mutilation and torture. 78 160
- Parasitic Thread — Binds and manipulates targets like puppets; he used it to restrain Buggy's scattered body. 78
- Five-Colored Strings — Sends massive strings down from above to slice through palace structures. 160
- Birdcage — Encloses Dressrosa in a vast cage of white strings, trapping inhabitants and combatants. 163
- Environmental conversion — Turns stone pillars, floors, and other structures into controllable white thread. 161
Haki
Doflamingo can use Conqueror's Haki and Armament Haki, combining both with his threads to increase their pressure and lethality. 77 78
- His Conqueror's Haki clashes with Buggy's Devil Aura strongly enough to create lightning-like effects and shake a warship. 78
- He coats threads and strikes with Armament Haki, allowing him to cut, bind, and attack Devil Fruit users more effectively. 78
- He uses Observation Haki to read Violet's fear and detect that she is concealing information. 159
White Thread Devil Fusion
By using the awakening theory to better perceive the devil within his fruit, Doflamingo summons and fuses with the White Thread Devil. 149 161
- Produces a mummy-like devil body with white-thread limbs and hollow secondary eyes. 161 163
- Enables direct control of Family members through nearly invisible strings, including reanimating fallen executives as puppets. 163
- Reduces his physical dependence on flesh, with bones and limbs replaced by white threads. 165
- Carries the risk of losing his individuality as the devil fusion deepens. 165 167
Mera Mera no Mi
Doflamingo consumed the Fire-Fire Fruit during his fight with Buggy, adding flame manipulation to his existing thread powers. 166
- Wraps his thread body in orange-red flames. 166
- Combines burning threads with his Mummy form to create flame-covered claws and barriers. 167
- His attempt to hold multiple Devil Fruits leaves his mind unstable, with Doflamingo and the devils struggling for control. 167
Relationships
- Buggy / Joker — Primary enemy and personal obsession. Buggy publicly exposed Doflamingo's criminal operations, provoked Vergo's betrayal, took over his Family, and drove him into devil fusion. 27 80 161 165
- Vergo — Former core Family member and Marine infiltrator. Vergo turned on Doflamingo over the Devil Fruit he believed had been stolen from him; Doflamingo killed him. 80 149
- Trebol — Original executive and longtime follower. Doflamingo killed him for investigating Vergo's death without permission. 149
- Diamante — Loyal Fighting Group leader who repeatedly offers to eliminate Doflamingo's enemies. Doflamingo eventually attacks him after deciding loyalty itself makes a person a liability. 60 165
- Violet — Captive Family assassin. Doflamingo tortures her with threads after realizing she is withholding part of Joker's message. 159
- Monet — Donquixote Family agent assigned to Punk Hazard. Her association with Joker is one of the betrayals that intensifies Doflamingo's rage. 147 159
- Caesar Clown — Scientist funded by Doflamingo to produce SAD for the SMILE trade. Doflamingo considers Caesar and the research facility bait powerful enough to draw enemies in. 144 148
- Crocodile — Later brings Doflamingo to Buggy during discussions of Wano's ancient history and Pluton. 212
- World Government — Maintains a Shichibukai arrangement and a prior agreement with the Gorosei, but distrusts the Government and seeks to overturn its order. 80 148
