Background

Buggy’s mind originated from three merged identities: the original Clown Emperor Buggy, a college student who worked as an amusement-park clown, and “Jack,” an Arkham Asylum inmate known as the Joker. Their memories combine in an uneven blend, with Jack’s influence most prominent during Buggy’s imprisonment aboard a Marine transport bound for Impel Down. 1

Refusing to follow the expected route of imprisonment and eventual escape, Buggy exploits fellow prisoner Arne’s fear, obtains his hidden blade, cuts off his own restrained hands, and escapes his cage. He subsequently takes control of the transport ship and selects Arne as the navigator for a future crew. 1 2

By the time he reaches Sabaody, Buggy’s three personalities have settled into a merged state. His interests remain consistent across them: clowning, spectacle, manipulation, and finding amusement in fear or disorder. 14

Appearance

Buggy is a clown-like pirate with a conspicuous red nose and Joker-inspired makeup. His body can separate into independently moving pieces, making his appearance especially unsettling in combat. 1 52

Although usually cruel and manipulative, Buggy occasionally shows selective sympathy toward people he identifies with, particularly clowns and victims of Celestial Dragon abuse. He frees a mute, blind clown from Saint Rosward’s collar and offers him the chance to kill Rosward in a “fair duel.” 241
