Li Wei could clearly feel the temperature of the eggshell enclosing the Silver Dragon's delicate body stabilize. He could even sense her sorrow as she continuously let out mournful cries toward the increasingly distant Starry Sky.
No one knew how long this egg had been falling. Just as it was about to smash apart on impact, the Silver Halo on the dragon egg appeared once more.
For a moment, the dragon egg seemed to lose all mass, drifting down like a feather near a volcanic crater billowing with smoke.
Only then did a string of words seem to suddenly pop into Li Wei's mind:
[Astral Blessing from Mother Toristana]: Sylvie, my child, may the stars shine upon your form, may the earth cherish your footsteps, may you never lose your way, and no matter how far apart we are, may you always find the road home. (I! Sylvie. Star of Dawn. Toristana! Never Die from a Leap of Faith!)
"???"
Li Wei was speechless at this obvious note Sylvie had added to the blessing. So this cheeky dragon had started getting cocky the moment she left home? Where had all that grief and bitterness from earlier gone? Had that indescribable ghostly thing licked her once and instantly turned her into a Chaotic Fool?
Naturally, Sylvie within the Inheritance Mark could not hear Li Wei's complaints across time and space. Having narrowly escaped death, she immediately cast aside all negative thoughts. After looking around and confirming there was no immediate danger, she wolfed down her own eggshell in a few bites, not leaving behind even a crumb. She even swallowed quite a few pebbles from the ground in the process.
She clearly held quite a grudge over the piece of eggshell on her head being lost in the Astral Plane. Li Wei, who had also lost a piece of eggshell, could deeply relate!
"Ah! Damn Kobolds! Once I wake up and eat my fill, I'm going to stew every last one of you into Dog Meat Hotpot!!!"
The Inheritance Dreamscape continued. After eating her eggshell, Sylvie was obviously even hungrier. She first swept clean every insect she could see, from scorpions to centipedes. Then she narrowed her eyes, lay on the volcanic ash, and sniffed around with a wrinkled nose. She muttered something under her breath with a grin, then began digging holes nonstop with her two slender foreclaws, paddling like a dog!
Plump, white Volcanic Worms kept getting dug up. Starving as she was, Sylvie did not stand on ceremony. She ate them as soon as she caught them, juice splattering everywhere as she chewed, showing none of the dignity expected of a noble Silver Dragon.
When a dragon was starving to death, who cared about dignity?
This was the greatest danger of having no Blood Relative to raise you! In such a perilous environment, a newly born Young Dragon was only about the size of a dog, and its overall Combat Power might not even match that of a hyena.
Yet the amount they needed to eat every day to ensure normal physical development was at least several times their own body weight! Food was completely digested less than ten minutes after entering their stomachs. It was an immensely heavy burden for survival.
As an observer, Li Wei felt much more balanced after seeing this. So this Silver Dragon senior's circumstances and way of surviving were not much better than his own. Still, he silently memorized every method she used to find food along the way.
Since she had managed to survive, she was the best possible example of survival! Once he woke from the dream, all of this would be invaluable experience for surviving in a Different World!
Just as Li Wei eagerly awaited whatever new survival knowledge he might learn from her, a wild and violent roar suddenly came from the distant sky.
"Roar!!!"
The terrifying Dragon Roar instantly swept across the entire volcanic mountain range, and a dreadful pressure as tangible as substance crashed down from the sky!
Li Wei could clearly feel Sylvie's body stiffen. Her once-lively eyes were instantly filled with numb despair.
Following Sylvie's gaze, at the End of the Sky, an enormous red creature was continuously beating wings with a span of over a hundred feet—more than thirty meters—as it flew proudly toward this volcano, its own nest, with an absolutely sovereign bearing.
A Red Dragon!
The strongest of the Chromatic Dragons!
An adult Red Dragon!
If judged by humanity's narrow levels, this was at least level eighteen or above! An enormous dragon that had already stepped halfway through the gates of legend.
If she wished, turning a prosperous town into a sea of flames would be nothing more than a casual outing dictated by her mood.
She held a long-dead Stingtail Lion in her mouth. This berserk magical beast, deadly enough in the eyes of human adventurers, was no different from a kitten in her jaws!
It was prepared for the children who were about to hatch.
Although most mothers among Chromatic Dragons were not particularly responsible, and many even chose to eat their dragon eggs due to pregnancy depression or being abandoned by faithless dragons and unwilling to raise Young Dragons—
Gretania, the [Crimson Dragon Mother], was not among them.
In a sense, Gretania was an oddity even among the promiscuous Chromatic Dragons. Gifted from birth and famous at a young age, she was extremely picky about mates and was a famously older single dragon in Chromatic Dragon circles!
Dragon society was also a typical matriarchy. Unlike humanoid societies, where males usually pursued females, among dragons it was generally powerful female dragons who took the initiative to flirt with male dragons.
If they encountered one with enough potential and strength, yet weaker than themselves, there were plenty who simply took what they wanted by force. This was also the main reason many Tool Dragons eventually became faithless dragons, especially evil dragons.
According to an analysis in a certain human work, Dragon Observation Diary, it was precisely this unhealthy mating method within dragon society that, to a certain extent, fostered male dragons' tendency to seek other creatures to vent their desires.
Furthermore, dragons possessed extremely aggressive hereditary traits. The reproductive barriers of ordinary creatures could rarely work effectively against them, directly leading to the birth of all manner of unheard-of draconic offspring throughout Coriel World.
In a sense, dragons had done a fine job of helping the Creator continue fulfilling part of the duty of creating all things.
And these were the first clutch of eggs Gretania had laid with an old Red Dragon who had reluctantly agreed to be with her.
Although that clearly stronger old Red Dragon had, unsurprisingly, patted his rear and left once things were done, Gretania still planned to raise a clutch of dragonlings for fun. Once she got tired of them, she could always drive them away later.
Li Wei could practically feel Sylvie's despair at that moment. This was absolutely not a comparison of Combat Strength that could be placed on the same level!
Once discovered, forget running—she would not even be able to kill herself!
A female Silver Dragon of Good Alignment falling into the hands of an inherently evil Red Dragon... who knew how many tricks that could lead to.
Li Wei pityingly imagined Sylvie's possible fate. The most likely outcome was that she would be kept by the Red Dragon as a toy and slave. And if that Red Dragon later had a clutch of dragonlings... tsk, tsk, the scene would be utterly indescribable.
Naturally, Sylvie could think of the consequences Li Wei had imagined.
Yet this Young Dragon did not choose to sit and wait for death. Instead, as if she had made some decision in an instant, she kept wrinkling her nose in search of some scent. Her silver body leaped through the barren volcanic range like an agile cat, as though racing Death itself!
"What exactly is she looking for? Did she find some way to escape?"
As the adult Red Dragon drew closer and closer, Sylvie squeezed every last bit of strength from her limited stamina! At last, when she rushed to the cliff's edge at the crater, the view suddenly opened up before her!
Her head turned several times in quick succession before she finally locked her gaze downward!
A Red Dragon Nest built inside the volcanic crater!
Within it lay three Crimson Red Dragon eggs covered in black markings!
"Holy shit! Is she planning to use dragon eggs to command a dragon? No, that can't be right! How could a Red Dragon possibly be threatened by a few pathetic dragon eggs? A Metal Dragon, maybe, but even that would only be somewhat possible."
Li Wei was stunned by Sylvie's insane move. Even now, he still could not grasp the train of thought of this Silver Dragon Miss, who seemed on the verge of madness.
Once Sylvie locked onto the Red Dragon Nest, she did not hesitate in the slightest. She took another Leap of Faith!
Even though she still could not fly, the Astral Blessing from her Silver Dragon mother activated once more. Sylvie floated down like a falling feather and landed lightly in the somewhat scorching Red Dragon Nest. She folded her dragon wings slightly, then curled her body as she used her Claws to lightly tap the shells of the three dragon eggs one by one under Li Wei's baffled gaze.
The first two sounded crisp, as if there were some vacuum inside. But when she tapped the third, the sound was dull.
Sylvie let out a breath of relief.
It was a Dead Egg.
They were common enough. Usually, mother dragons would swallow them into their stomachs to "reforge" them.
Even more common were Dragon Beasts that failed to awaken their Dragon True Names. These were generally driven away by mother dragons and left to fend for themselves in the wilderness.
In recent years, however, many adventurers who caught wind of this had waited nearby to pick up the leftovers. A newborn Dragon Beast could often fetch an astronomical price at auction, and there was no need to worry about retaliation from evil dragons. Of course, that was assuming they could escape the evil dragon's territory alive with the Dragon Beast.
Yet Sylvie's next move left Li Wei dumbfounded.
Sylvie lightly knocked off a piece of eggshell from the Dead Egg with her Claws, then rammed her head through the milky-white membrane and gulped down all the half-solidified Egg Liquid inside in one go!
Suppressing the urge to let out a satisfied burp, she quickly picked up the piece of shell she had removed after finishing the dragon egg. She slowly curled her whole body, now much thinner from exhausting her stamina, into the hollowed-out Red Dragon egg. She carefully covered the opening with the piece of eggshell, which happened to fit the size of her head perfectly, then licked it a few times from the inside.
From the outside, it looked as though the eggshell merely had a few cracks.
At the same time, although Li Wei could not see it, he could sense Sylvie's body undergoing rapid changes!
Outside, not long after Sylvie finished all this, Gretania, the mother Red Dragon who had caught her prey, flew back to her nest amid gusting winds. She routinely glanced at the three dragon eggs in her nest. Her gaze lingered for a moment on the egg with a few cracks, then she turned her head away, narrowed her eyes, and slowly began to doze, quietly waiting for the birth of her first clutch of children.
No one knew how long passed before the leftmost dragon egg slowly began to shake. Along with the cracking of its shell, a round little head popped out. It was not Sylvie, but a newborn Red Dragon!
The mother Red Dragon opened her eyes, which resembled Abyssal Lava, and gave her first child an interested yet gradually stern glance.
Perhaps afraid of its mother, the Red Dragon hatchling seemed to remember something and let out a rather imposing roar. "Soren Grel. Gretania. Yumungandr!"
A Dragon True Name.
Gretania nodded in satisfaction. Her child had not disappointed her after all.
At the same time, the second dragon egg also hatched, but the creature that emerged was clearly much weaker. Gretania patiently waited for a full three breaths, yet this Red Dragon hatchling could still only produce meaningless roars.
The mother Red Dragon narrowed her eyes. The next moment, she casually picked up this Dragon Beast that had failed to awaken its Dragon True Name and threw it into the constantly rolling lava beneath the nest. With a gurgling splash, it disappeared without another sound.
The eldest son, Soren, was clearly intimidated by his mother's brutal act. Even his strong appetite for the Stingtail Lion was temporarily suppressed.
As the mother dragon's unfriendly gaze shifted to the smallest third dragon egg, just as her already limited patience was about to run out—
The last Young Dragon pushed open its eggshell. It pretended to look adorably clueless as it examined the enormous beast before it, then finally let out a roar:
"Sylvie. CC. Gretania. Yumungandr!"
The mother Red Dragon stared at Sylvie for a long time. After a while, she finally bared her teeth in a smile whose meaning was impossible to discern, then shifted away her still-warmless gaze, as if she had not noticed at all that her third dragon egg had already been swapped.
Sylvie immediately began devouring the eggshell beneath her. As the viewpoint shifted, Li Wei, already numb with shock, finally saw that her scales had somehow turned red!
Not just her scales! Her facial contours, even her thick Hindlimbs, were exactly like those of a Red Dragon!
After swallowing the eggshell, Sylvie lifted her head and revealed an equally playful smile. It made cold sweat break out across Li Wei's body, and he jolted awake from the dream!
A piece of information still lingered in his thoughts:
[Silver Dragon Sylvie's Talent]: True Polymorph! (Transformable forms: Red Dragon/∞) (As long as I, Sylvie, have eaten it! There's nothing I can't transform into!)
After witnessing this master's outrageous stunt from beginning to end, only one thought remained in Li Wei's mind: Holy shit!
