Background / History

Birth and inherited legacy

Piccolo hatched from King Piccolo’s egg in the Cloud-Marsh Bit Plateau. Though only several dozen centimeters tall, he immediately killed an attacking eagle, washed himself in a river, and began seeking food without crying or showing fear. He inherited King Piccolo’s memories and life essence, including the former Demon King’s fixation on a mysterious Namekian spaceship. 104

Son Gohan observed Piccolo’s birth from afar and allowed him to survive alone before deciding whether he was suitable to become a disciple. Piccolo’s inherited memories made him powerful enough to dominate the plateau’s wildlife from birth. 104

While searching for the Namekian spaceship, Piccolo encountered Son Gohan disguised as an elderly Taoist. He agreed to a ten-day wager: if he could reclaim the spaceship without being detected, he would win; if he failed, he would accept Son Gohan as his master. 109 110

Piccolo attempted a surprise attack during the wager and later used his stretching arms to restrain Son Gohan, but ultimately accepted defeat. Son Gohan formally took him as his first disciple and explained that he was King Piccolo’s reincarnated child, but also an individual Namekian with emotions and an identity of his own. 112

Learning that King Piccolo’s resentment stemmed from abandonment and fragmented memories allowed Piccolo to let go of much of his inherited obsession. He began meditating after training, steadily gaining control over the unstable Ki he had inherited. 112 113

Guardian of Earth and return to Namek

After the Old Kami’s departure, Piccolo fused with him and became the new Guardian of Earth. He accepted the responsibility only temporarily, resenting the forced fusion and the absence of any new memories from the Guardian. 164

Piccolo later traveled to Namek with Son Gohan’s group to discover his origins. There, the Grand Elder recognized him as Katatz’s child and learned the history of Kami and Demon Piccolo through his memories. The Grand Elder regarded Piccolo as one of Namek’s greatest hopes and a possible future guardian of the planet. 165
