Background
Son Goku is one of the last surviving Saiyans from Planet Vegeta. Known among Saiyans as Kakarot, he and Son Gohan were sent to Earth by Bardock before Frieza destroyed their homeworld. Their adoptive grandfather raised them on Baozi Mountain. 1 8
As a child, Goku fell into a valley and struck his head while roughhousing with Son Gohan. The injury caused memory loss and left him unusually straightforward, a trait that later aided his martial-arts comprehension but left him naïve in everyday matters. 2
Goku treasured his grandfather’s Four-Star Ball and initially feared losing it during the Dragon Ball search. He later learned that Son Gohan—not Goku himself—had been responsible for their grandfather’s death, ending Goku’s long-held blame. 2 39
Appearance
Goku was a tailed Saiyan child during the Dragon Ball journey, shorter than Son Gohan despite being the elder brother. After training at Kami’s Lookout, he grew to over 1.7 meters and returned in a dark martial-arts uniform with the Ruyi Staff carried across his back. 1 126
- A prehensile Saiyan tail, used as a racial marker and a key to Giant Ape transformation. 1 7
- Later wears a dark martial-arts uniform. 126
- Carries the red, extending Ruyi Staff. 9 23 126
- Super Saiyan forms give him golden hair and green eyes; Super Saiyan 2 adds golden lightning around his aura. 190 223
- Super Saiyan 3 gives him waist-length golden hair and a pronounced brow ridge. 254
Personality
Goku is simple, honest, cheerful, and intensely enthusiastic about fighting strong opponents. He remains carefree after losses that discourage Krillin and Yamcha, and reacts to powerful enemies such as Majin Buu with excitement rather than fear. 75 248
His heart is notably clear, a quality Master Roshi values more highly than Son Gohan’s superior Ki when judging his potential. Goku’s sincerity and natural aptitude make him exceptionally suited to martial arts. 13
Although battle-driven, he is compassionate. After effortlessly defeating Raditz, he chooses not to kill his biological brother and visits him daily while he recovers. 173
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Physiology
Goku possesses the exceptional growth potential and battle-oriented physique of a Saiyan.
- His tail enables transformation into a Giant Ape when exposed to artificial or natural moonlight waves. 7
- Giant Ape transformation increases a Saiyan’s combat power tenfold. 7
- He benefits dramatically from recovery after near-fatal strain, using hazardous Gravity Room training to accelerate his growth. 162
- His intact tail acts as an energy stabilizer, improving Super Saiyan 3’s control and endurance. 254
Ki Manipulation
Goku’s greatest natural talent is his instinctive command of Ki.
- Learns the Kamehameha by copying Master Roshi’s posture and immediately produces a Ki blast. 32
- Uses Ki blasts in his World Martial Arts Tournament semifinal against Son Gohan. 74
- Learns flight and develops enough Ki perception to respond to Son Gohan’s signal from a great distance. 126
- Can survive in the vacuum of space after receiving instruction from Son Gohan. 186
Kamehameha
Goku’s signature energy-wave technique.
- First reproduces a rudimentary version without formal training. 32
- Uses a Kamehameha to counter Cell’s destructive energy sphere while exhausted. 223
- Continues using the technique in close succession with high-speed physical combat. 223
Transformation Technique
Goku learns a shapeshifting technique alongside Son Gohan.
- Can assume another person’s appearance, voice, and physique. 19
- His early transformations consume Ki quickly and end after roughly ten minutes when his energy is depleted. 20
- The technique initially leaves him unable to deactivate at will after prolonged use. 39
Super Saiyan Transformations
Goku’s Saiyan transformations are driven by emotional breakthroughs and refined through battle.
- Super Saiyan — Awakened through rage over Son Gohan’s apparent death; greatly increases his power against Frieza. 190
- Super Saiyan 2 — Reached through a breakthrough during his battle with Cell; manifests a more intense golden aura and electrical arcs. 223
- Super Saiyan 3 — A high-output form used against Majin Buu; Goku’s tail allows substantially better energy efficiency than the form normally provides. 253 254
Kaioken
Goku can amplify his strength further by activating Kaioken during battle.
- Combines Kaioken with Super Saiyan 2 while fighting Cell. 223
- The technique sharply raises his power but is associated with substantial bodily strain. 160
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Four-Star Ball — His treasured keepsake from Grandfather Son Gohan. 2
- Flying Nimbus — A magical cloud awarded to him because of his clear heart. 13
- Ruyi Staff — A red staff capable of extending and retracting freely; later carried on his back. 9 23 126
- Senzu Beans — Used to restore his stamina and enable his Super Saiyan 2 breakthrough against Cell. 223
Relationships
- Son Gohan — Younger brother, fellow Saiyan, training partner, and closest rival. Their bond is affectionate and competitive; Goku accepts Gohan’s victories and repeatedly seeks to grow stronger beside him. 1 74 94
- Grandfather Son Gohan — Adoptive grandfather and guardian. Goku deeply misses him and is overwhelmed during their reunion. 2 108 150
- Master Roshi / Master Mutaito — Martial-arts master who recognizes Goku’s clear heart and extraordinary potential, later accepting him as a disciple. 13 14 32
- Bulma — Early Dragon Ball companion. Goku accompanies her on the search and remains part of her wider family circle. 1 14
- Chichi — Wife. She joins him on his journey to Korin Tower, and the two later agree to marry. 110 149
- Son Gohan (son) — Goku’s newborn son; by this time Goku is described as a responsible husband and father. 161
- Raditz — Biological elder brother. Goku defeats him with one punch but spares him and nurses him through recovery. 173
- Piccolo — Sparring partner and fellow defender of Earth; their high-speed battle demonstrates the widening gap between them and most other martial artists. 157
- Vegeta — Fellow Saiyan and Hyperbolic Time Chamber training partner. Goku is excited by their opportunity to improve together despite Vegeta’s aloofness. 184
- Cell — Opponent whose battle pushes Goku to Super Saiyan 2. 223
- Majin Buu — Opponent against whom Goku unveils Super Saiyan 3. 253 254
