Background / History

Son Gohan transmigrated into the Dragon Ball world, was sent to Earth alongside Kakarot, and was adopted by a grandfather in the mountains. He grew up in isolation with Goku, hunting for food and treating him as a younger brother despite their frequent arguments over who was older. 1 2

When Bulma arrived searching for the Dragon Balls, Gohan quickly recognized her attempts at manipulation but still joined the journey. He later told her that he and Goku were Saiyan refugees from Planet Vegeta, which Frieza had destroyed, and asked her to disable the listening function in his scouter so Frieza could not learn of Earth’s Dragon Balls. 1 8

Gohan became a disciple of Master Roshi after persuading him to delay formal training until the Dragon Ball search was complete. During his Kame Style training, he developed Ki perception and externalization far faster than his peers, eventually surpassing Roshi’s grasp of Ki and being regarded as a possible inheritor of the Kame Style. 14 31 47 126

After King Piccolo’s death, Gohan chose to test and mentor Piccolo Jr. rather than treat him as an enemy. He revealed Piccolo’s Namekian origins, helped him separate his own identity from his father’s hatred, and accepted him as his first disciple. 103 109 112 147

Appearance

Gohan initially appears as a handsome, childlike Saiyan with a tail. At age fifteen, he undergoes the Saiyan growth spurt into an adult form, reaching nearly two meters in height. 1 21 124

  • Black hair in his normal state. 188
  • A Saiyan tail, which is tied to his Great Ape transformation and energy regulation. 1 40 254
  • Adult form with upright, blade-like hair, sharp brows, a broad back, narrow waist, and heavily trained physique. 124
  • Super Saiyan form with golden hair, emerald eyes, and a powerful golden aura. 186
  • Super Saiyan 2 form marked by a much greater aura and lightning-like energy. 205

Personality

Gohan is observant, tactful, and highly deliberate in social situations. He sees through Bulma’s early deception, mediates conflicts between companions, and frequently uses teasing or disguise to test another person’s character and resolve. 1 6 109 119

He possesses an intense desire for strength, rooted in his fear of future threats and his wish to protect Bulma, Wuya, Earth, and the people close to him. This drive makes him train relentlessly in gravity chambers, seek knowledge from Kami, Namek, Yardrat, and North Kai, and prepare far in advance for enemies such as Raditz and Frieza. 56 117 154 183

Although he enjoys battle and can be ruthless toward major threats, he views martial arts as a means of protection rather than personal domination. He tells Vegeta that true martial arts should free people from suffering and that the Super Saiyan transformation requires a heart that yearns for freedom. 195
