Background
Steve Rogers grew up in Brooklyn with his mother, Sarah Rogers, in a modest but well-kept home. His father served with the 107th Infantry Regiment during World War I and died from mustard gas before Steve was born. Steve and Sarah are devoted to one another, and she initially opposes his wish to enlist because she has already lost her husband to war. 61 65
As a physically frail boy, Steve refuses to retreat even when bullied. James Howlett witnesses him standing up to bullies, helps Sarah receive medical care, and becomes Steve’s teacher. Under James’s training, Steve gradually gains muscle, stamina, and confidence while remaining visibly small. 61 64
At eighteen or nineteen, Steve seeks permission from Sarah and James to enlist after the United States enters World War II. Though he proves himself by defeating criminal Gibson Cullen and repeatedly attempts recruitment, the military initially rejects him over his stature and medical record. He ultimately enters the SSR through the Super Soldier Program. 65 66
Appearance
Steve was originally short, thin, and sickly-looking, though James’s training gave him an unusually sturdy body and exceptional stamina before his serum treatment. 64 67
Following the Super Soldier transformation, he grows from under 1.65 meters and roughly 60 kilograms into a robust man around 1.9 meters tall. 83
- Tall, broad-shouldered, and heavily built after the serum procedure. 68 83
- Noted for bright azure eyes and a composed, imposing presence. 99 251
- Wears a dark blue combat suit and helmet during World War II operations. 76
- Later adopts dark blue-black Order Whip uniforms and Aerospace Force service uniforms. 163 251
- His shield’s original star-spangled design is later replaced with the Howlett Family’s red fang-shaped “H” emblem. 103
Personality
Steve is courageous, stubborn, and deeply resistant to injustice. Even before becoming a super-soldier, he confronts bullies and criminals despite his weak physique. His desire to enlist comes from a sincere willingness to fight for others rather than personal ambition. 61 65
He possesses strong moral independence. Steve rejects the military’s attempt to turn him into a passive promotional symbol, refuses to surrender his teacher-given equipment for testing, and eventually rejects the SSR’s authority when it treats him as state property rather than a person. 68 76 100 101
As a leader, Steve favors intelligence, preparation, and controlled force. He clashes with Erik Lehnsherr over confronting Apocalypse immediately, insisting that the Order Whip needs a battle plan and reliable information first. 172
