Charles was born into the wealthy Xavier family, whose Westchester estate had been in the family for generations. He studied in England, earned a doctorate from Oxford, and later worked at New York University while living in New York with Raven Darkholme, whom he had brought home as an orphan with the intention of adopting her. 75 113

A researcher of genetic mutation as well as a mutant himself, Charles joined the government-linked Mutant Power Research Department as its chief consultant. His early goal was to locate isolated mutants, help them manage the problems caused by their abilities, and invite willing individuals into mutant-power research. 106 113
