Background / History

Before the main Southern Border events, Lu Jiuyuan rescued Xiaobai during one of his travels. Their prior connection is longstanding enough that he immediately recognizes her silhouette when she arrives near Black Stone City, while she refers to herself as having come to find her “younger brother.” 1 67 69

Xiaobai arrives from outside the city while Fenxiang Valley’s remaining forces are searching for Lu Jiuyuan. When Li Xun and his disciples attempt to capture her, she turns their numbers against them through her gaze, then personally kills Li Xun. Her actions eliminate Fenxiang Valley’s immediate ambush threat against the Qingyun Sect disciples. 65 66 67 69

Rather than immediately reveal herself to Lu Jiuyuan, Xiaobai follows him, leaves him her nine-tailed fox hairpin, sends letters, and delivers a pot of nourishing soup. She eventually invites him to meet her at a lake outside Black Stone City. 69 74 82 83 85

At the lake, Xiaobai admits her insecurity over her age and asks whether Lu Jiuyuan truly likes her. He confirms that he has liked her since their first meeting, and she accepts his feelings. 86 87

Xiaobai is composed, self-assured, and disdainful of people she considers beneath her. When surrounded by Fenxiang Valley disciples, she remains relaxed and mocking rather than fearful; once they reveal their intentions, she treats them as prey and calmly orchestrates their deaths. 65 66

Around Lu Jiuyuan, she is playful, flirtatious, and fond of calling herself his “big sister.” Beneath that confidence, however, she is emotionally vulnerable: she worries that her age makes her unworthy of his affection and is deeply moved when he openly reciprocates her feelings. 67 86 87

She is also observant and practical. During the group’s Southern Border investigation, she notices that the demonic beast attacks are coordinated and connects the Demon Sect’s objective to Fenxiang Valley’s suspicious inaction. 96 97
