Two days had passed by the time Catelyn received word from Deepwood Motte.
Maester Luwin hurried into Bran's bedroom with a letter in hand. When he saw Robb and Sansa there as well, he breathed a sigh of relief.
He strode over to Catelyn and slipped a letter from his sleeve, handing it to her.
"My lady, a letter has come from Deepwood Motte. You need to read it!"
Catelyn sat in a chair, clutching Bran's lifeless hand. At Maester Luwin's words, her brow furrowed.
After the Trial by Combat and Bran's fall from the tower, Catelyn's attitude toward Garon had softened somewhat. She was no longer as hostile toward him as before.
But that was only because he had helped her catch the man who had tried to murder Bran.
Other than that, she had no desire to see Garon.
Without turning around, Catelyn stroked Bran's thin fingers and said with a cold snort, "What does he want?"
Sansa's eyes sparkled, and a hint of delight and anticipation showed on her face.
Could Garon have sent me a letter?
But Maester Luwin still held it out to Catelyn, saying in a low voice, "My lady—you really should read it!"
Catelyn remained unmoved.
With no other choice, Maester Luwin explained, "My lady, Lord Garon has captured Joel!"
"Joel? The poacher?"
Catelyn couldn't remember who Joel was. Angrily, she said, "My son is lying here unconscious, and he's bothering me with such trivial matters?"
But Robb stepped forward and took the letter, explaining as he read, "Mother, Joel was one of the men who tried to murder Bran, along with Theon."
"Garon says they found Joel near Deepwood Motte, gravely wounded by a wild animal. Before he died, he revealed who was behind the attempt on Bran's life!"
