Chapter 12: Following
The door of the Gladstone Type III Car opened automatically, and David sat into the soft seat; the car had already activated its power system the moment it detected his identity bracelet.
The Gladstone Type III Car hovered slightly off the ground, maintaining a height of 0.3 meters, and then the garage door opened.
The car drove out of the garage automatically, while a map of the entire Peilan City appeared before David.
David was not yet an adult, and coupled with his low clearance, he was not qualified to drive the car himself; he could only engage the autopilot mode, with the entire journey controlled by the City Traffic System.
Sitting in the comfortable seat, feeling the stability and quietness of the car, he watched as it merged onto the main road.
It must be mentioned here that the traffic in Peilan City, or rather, the traffic across the entire Panshi Planet and even the entire Interstellar Federation, was strictly regulated.
Although with the technological capabilities of the Interstellar Federation, flight could have been easily achieved long ago, and after ten thousand years of development, the technology was already incredibly mature.
However, whether in the star systems near the War Star or in peaceful star systems, they all followed the same principle: flight was only permitted for citizens with the corresponding clearance.
Ordinary citizens could only do as David was doing, driving a car at a height of 0.3 meters from the ground, with a maximum limit of no more than 1 meter.
Air traffic was also divided into several levels, and the higher one went, the higher the required clearance.
Just as David left in the Gladstone Type III Car and entered the main road, he sensed an observing gaze.
Of course, this was not his own perception, but rather what the Shadow Servant hidden beside him had sensed.
His heart tightened; the aftermath he had been worried about had finally arrived. He couldn't understand what a high school senior like him could possibly have that would make others covet him.
But the fact remained that he suspected Trainer Jeremy had used the Sacrificial Manual to try and kill him.
And Trainer Jeremy had indeed succeeded; David's predecessor had already been killed by the sacrifice.
Now, this observing gaze was most likely Trainer Jeremy checking to see if he was dead, and perhaps, upon discovering that he hadn't died, he would continue to take action against him.
However, he wasn't worried at the moment. Just by looking at the patrol vehicles flying overhead from time to time, he knew that at least today, in this atmosphere, no one would dare to take action against him brazenly.
The Gladstone Type III Car was on autopilot and did not require David to control it, so he relaxed his body and focused on the Shadow Servant beside him.
The Shadow Servant's body rose, passed through the car body, and arrived outside.
Through the eyes of the Shadow Servant, he saw a burly, middle-aged man sitting in an inconspicuous, ordinary car.
This person was not Trainer Jeremy, whom David had expected; David was certain he did not know this man, but the way this person looked at him was definitely not the look of a stranger.
The Shadow Servant could only stay within ten meters of David, which allowed it to see the man's face clearly before it involuntarily followed the Gladstone Type III Car as it flew away.
That ordinary car started up and followed after David's Gladstone Type III Car had passed, which made David's heart tighten.
Just as David was feeling nervous, he discovered that the other party was only following from a distance and had no intention of catching up, which made him feel relieved.
After discovering that the burly man following him posed no immediate danger, David stopped paying attention to the follower.
He felt the speed of the Gladstone Type III Car, which soon stabilized at seventy kilometers per hour; of course, this was not the full speed of the Gladstone Type III Car.
In fact, at full speed, the Gladstone Type III Car could reach five hundred kilometers per hour, but it was simply not needed in the city, and David did not have the clearance for such high speeds.
The power source that allowed the Gladstone Type III Car to reach such speeds was also related to Krypton Crystal mines, though even as good as the Gladstone Type III Car was, it couldn't afford to use Krypton Crystals as its primary power source.
The Interstellar Federation's research into Krypton Crystals had lasted for twenty thousand years, and during this period, other forms of energy had certainly appeared.
But the convenience of Krypton Crystals and their significant abundance throughout the universe allowed them to successfully suppress all other forms of energy.
One of the biggest reasons for this was that after the energy in a Krypton Crystal was exhausted, the remaining crystal structure could be fitted with a conversion device to directly absorb light energy from stars to store within it.
Although the energy stored in the Krypton Crystal was far less vast than the original energy of the crystal, it was far more convenient, safe, and economical than other energy forms.
What surprised David most about this was that nuclear energy had not appeared in this world.
Perhaps it was precisely because of the existence of Krypton Crystals that scientists in this world did not have such an urgent need for energy, or perhaps the technological path of this world was the most correct one.
Of course, this did not mean that this world lacked weapons comparable to nuclear weapons; the antimatter main cannons on large warships, once charged and fired, had enough power to destroy small planets.
The energy block of this Gladstone Type III Car didn't even need to be replaced for a year when used in the city like David was doing.
David's mind wandered with wild thoughts, marveling at the advanced technology of this world, and he couldn't help but think of the terrifying Zerg that had been fighting against them for ten thousand years.
One had to know that the Zerg were fighting against the Interstellar Federation and God's Great World all on their own; their strength could be imagined.
Of course, while he was thinking, the Shadow Servant, hidden and sitting behind the car, was also keeping a constant eye on the car following behind; that car always maintained a great distance from his, seemingly not wanting to be discovered by him either.
Just then, the Gladstone Type III Car stopped, and David saw the gates of the police station.
He stepped out of the car, and the Gladstone Type III Car automatically drove to a parking lot nearby.
The Shadow Servant followed behind him, and the follower, seemingly surprised that David had actually come to the police station, did not stop and drove away directly.
After David swiped his identity bracelet at the entrance, an arrow appeared on it; this was his designated path within the police station, and he was not allowed to leave this path without authorization.
Although this function ensured order, he disliked it very much.
Of course, it was not impossible to change this; as long as one had sufficient Interstellar Federation clearance, no one would question where you walked.
For now, he could only follow the guidance of the arrow toward the designated location.
The target location was a conference room in the police station, which had a space of three hundred square meters—a fairly large area.
At this moment, the large space was extremely noisy, and there were even sounds of crying.
"My child had already received an admission letter from Yako University, and you just dismiss it with a single word—'accident'? That was a wanted criminal! I've already inquired; there were four Interceptor drones in pursuit, which is what led to this tragedy!" an angry middle-aged man shouted loudly.
Although Yako University cannot compare to Na'an University, it is still a key university on Panshi Planet, especially its mathematics department, which has produced many famous figures.
Being able to receive a special admission letter from Yako University shows that the child was truly outstanding, so it is no wonder the middle-aged man was so furious.
The middle-aged man's words also stirred the emotions of the people around him; since this morning, these victims' families had come here to demand an investigation into the truth and for those responsible to be severely punished.
"My child had the hope of becoming an Armored Warrior; who gave the order for the Interceptor drone to attack? I demand a thorough investigation!" another angry man pointed at the police officer in front of him and questioned him loudly.
This man's questioning made the crowd even more agitated, and the scene began to descend into chaos.
At this moment, David felt a stir in his heart; he thought of that red light orb of Mathematics (99% Beginner), could it be that this was obtained from the middle-aged man's child?
As for the man who said his child had the hope of becoming an Armored Warrior, he was likely the owner of the Body Technique (70% Beginner) knowledge orb or the Heavy Axe Mastery (33% Beginner) knowledge orb.
He looked at the two men with some apology, and at the same time, he felt a sense of guilt toward everyone who appeared here; he felt like a thief who had stolen the belongings of those who had already lost their loved ones.
