When Old Aja handed Mist Oasis over to Nur, he was still just a green youth in his twenties.

Before succeeding Aja, Nur had served as a "katib" in the oasis caravans, equivalent to a caravan accountant in other nations. He was responsible for drafting trade contracts and usually needed to know coded bookkeeping as well.

To hold that position, one had to at least be proficient in reading and writing both the common tongue and Ancient Sarranid.

After several years of experience, Old Aja decided the time was right and made him the sayyid, or leader, of a thousand-man caravan.

The standard caravan configurations of the Sarranid Sultanate, from smallest to largest, were:

Short-distance camel trains of thirty men and merchant groups of a hundred.

Above those came thousand-man caravans.

Ten-thousand-man caravans were more or less the upper limit; there was little room to grow beyond that.

With spatial storage technology, thousand-man caravans did not place high demands on the carrying capacity of their pack animals.

Instead, they had fairly high standards for speed, stamina, and toughness.

The sand-striding camels at the heart of the caravans could go dozens of days without Feeding or drinking.

Caravans would assign Crossbowmen or bow and arrow users at a ratio of ten percent to guard against bandits along the way.

There would also be dedicated camel physicians within the convoy.

Of course, aside from those short-distance caravans and traveling merchants acting as secondary distributors, caravans with even a modest scale did not travel point to point on foot, but went from one teleportation point to another.

After arriving in a new region, they would then travel by traditional means to valuable settlements one by one.
