Appearance

Konohagakure is a densely developed settlement arranged around the Hokage Building, described as a “village” in name but functioning as a metropolis with a permanent population exceeding 200,000. Streets radiate from the administrative center in a fan-like layout. 17

Background

Konohagakure was founded through the cooperation of the Senju and Uchiha ancestors, ending their earlier era of conflict. The Naka River and Naka Shrine remain associated with the strife between those clans during the Warring States period and the rise of the hidden-village system. 3 177

By the time of the Third Shinobi World War, Konoha had developed into the strongest of the hidden villages but was politically divided. The Hokage faction retained institutional authority, while the Uchiha clan possessed substantial military strength, controlled the Military Police Force, and accumulated major commercial influence through Ginza. 4 10 17

The village's leadership relied on the Uchiha's combat power while also distrusting the clan. Konoha ordered the Uchiha to defend the eastern coast against Kirigakure, eventually allowing them to form an independent army on the condition that the clan independently finance its personnel, supplies, weapons, and medical needs. 5 10 51

Third Shinobi World War

Konoha was threatened across multiple fronts as Kumogakure, Iwagakure, Sunagakure, and Kirigakure moved forces toward the Land of Fire. Small enemy squads infiltrated its territory, while the Hokage's administration struggled to allocate commanders and manpower to every threatened border. 10

• Southwestern front — Konoha launched a surprise offensive against Sunagakure with Orochimaru and Jiraiya leading roughly 3,000 shinobi, but withdrew after Sunagakure's counterattack. 47 48
• Eastern front — Kirigakure surrounded and inflicted heavy casualties on Konoha's eastern shinobi army. The Uchiha Red-Armored Army operated independently in the area and later used the conflict to expand its influence from Mugen City. 66 68

Conflict with the Uchiha

The relationship between Konoha's leadership and the Uchiha clan deteriorated throughout the war. Uchiha members viewed the Hokage administration as hostile to their interests, while Shimura Danzō openly distrusted the clan and considered eliminating it. 3 10

The Uchiha's independent military force, commercial resources, and growing ties with other clans made them increasingly difficult for the Hokage to control. The Hyuga and Ino-Shika-Cho sent members to the Red-Armored Army, creating a force described as a miniature version of Konohagakure. 101

The Land of Fire's Daimyo later appointed Uchiha Anlan as Pillar General of the East, granting him authority over eastern military and political affairs and establishing the Mugen City Shogunate. This marked the Uchiha's open break from Konoha's old political order. 107

Hokage Succession

Sarutobi Hiruzen's authority weakened amid military defeats, Danzō's actions, internal distrust, and the Uchiha's rise. Following Danzō's trial and execution, Hiruzen committed suicide. 178

Tsunade succeeded him as Konoha's Fourth Hokage amid a crisis in which the village faced external invasion and internal division. Jiraiya sent Namikaze Minato back to help stabilize the village while Konoha's fronts remained under pressure. 177 178

Integration into the Shogunate

After the Mugen City Shogunate's victories over Sunagakure and Iwagakure, Konoha's defenders regarded the Shogunate as an ally capable of reversing their desperate position. 186

Konoha later joined the Shogunate coalition alongside Kirigakure, Amegakure, and Sunagakure for the final northwestern campaign. Tsunade participated in Shogunate affairs as Konohagakure's representative. 185 186

Following the Shogunate's victory, Uchiha Anlan proclaimed the Divine Luo Flame Dynasty and abolished the separate national titles, systems, and ruling rights of the old era, ending Konohagakure's former independent political status. 189
