Tang Wulin grew up in Aolai City and attended Hongshan Academy, where he shared the stigma of low Innate Soul Power with Situ Xuan. He considered Situ a friend despite the latter's coldness and indifference 3. At nine, Tang Wulin left home alone for Donghai Academy; seeing Situ at the station briefly relieved his fear of the unfamiliar city 4.

At Donghai, he entered Zero Class alongside Gu Yue, Xie Xie, Zhang Yangzi, and Wang Jinxi. He recognized Situ as the benchmark of their year and warned Wu Zhangkong that Situ had “no weaknesses” 16. Tang Wulin repeatedly organized team tactics against Situ and was appointed Zero Class monitor for his leadership, tenacity, and willingness to shoulder responsibility 30 41.

He later enrolled at Shrek Academy and became captain of his team. His longstanding feelings for Gu Yue, combined with the Golden Dragon King bloodline's violent influence, made him increasingly vulnerable to jealousy and suspicion when she grew closer to Situ Xuan 323 324.

During a Tang Sect Soul Fighting Hall mission, Tang Wulin encountered Situ in an underground passage.
