Background
Madara Uchiha selected Obito to inherit his name and legacy. Under Madara’s influence, Obito adopted the Eye of the Moon Plan and prepared to use the Ten-Tails and Infinite Tsukuyomi to create a world where Rin could exist in peace. Madara also taught him Yin–Yang Release and placed a Cursed Seal talisman on his heart to restrict his movements. 37 275 277
Obito initially believed Rin’s death proved that reality was irredeemably cruel. After Rin was revived, he learned that she had been forced to die by charging into Kakashi’s Chidori to destroy the seal on her heart; the revelation exposed Madara’s manipulation of both Rin and Obito. Tsunade later successfully removed Obito’s own Cursed Seal. 266 277 279
Appearance
Obito first appears as a tall, short-haired man in an Akatsuki cloak, fully concealed beneath a yellow spiral-patterned mask. Only his right Sharingan was visible through its eyehole. 27
- Wears Akatsuki’s black cloak with red clouds while operating under the identity of “Madara.” 27
- Uses a yellow spiral mask during his masked persona; later abandons it after revealing his face. 27 275
- Has prominent facial scarring from being crushed beneath rocks in the past. 275
- His exposed right eye was shown as a three-tomoe Sharingan while masked. 27
Personality
Obito cultivates an imposing “Madara Uchiha” persona, using the identity to command Akatsuki members and manipulate allies such as Sasuke. He tends to treat people as pieces in a larger plan, confidently calling Sasuke a pawn and intending to use his ocular power for the Eye of the Moon Plan. 38 215 227
Behind the persona, Obito is deeply insecure about being an impostor rather than the legendary Madara. After Kakashi recognizes him, he reflects that he is merely “Obito Uchiha”—clumsy, cowardly, and unable to accomplish anything—yet he still chooses to continue his path. 233
His attachment to Rin is the core of his decisions. Her return leaves him shocked, emotionally volatile, and protective; her disapproval can immediately halt his violent impulses. 266 276 His hatred of Kakashi remains intense, mixing rage with grief over their shared past. 133 142
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Obito possessed exceptional ocular talent. He awakened a two-tomoe Sharingan at age twelve, then evolved directly to the Mangekyō Sharingan during his next awakening; his transplanted left eye evolved alongside the right eye in Kakashi’s possession. 18
- His Mangekyō ability is Kamui, shared between his original right eye and Kakashi’s transplanted left eye. 18 142
- His eyes are described as unusually gifted even among Mangekyō users. 18
- He can synchronize Kamui with Sasuke’s Amaterasu, producing a massive black-flame python capable of devastating a battlefield. 103
Kamui
Kamui is a space–time technique with offensive, defensive, transport, and evasive uses, anchored to its own pocket dimension. 18
- Teleports himself or other targets through spatial vortices. 30 142
- Phases his body to let attacks pass through him, allowing him to evade opponents who cannot force him to materialize. 266
- Can pull opponents into the Kamui Dimension, as he does to Kakashi. 142 439
- Grants a rare inherent pocket dimension, described as a prototype of the dimension-based power associated with Amenominaka. 18
- Must materialize to attack; opponents can defeat him by baiting an attack and striking during that opening. 266
- Could not use Kamui after becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki. 438
Hashirama Cells and Wood Release
Half of Obito’s body contains Hashirama Cells through his White Zetsu body, giving him unusually strong compatibility with Senju-derived power. 18
- Independently learned Wood Release: Cutting Sprigs during his first battle with a White Zetsu body. 18
- Possesses both Uchiha ocular power and Senju-derived vitality. 18
- Keeps a supply of Hashirama Cells and offers them to Sasuke as a means of growing stronger. 215
- His Wood Release is limited in practice; Cutting Sprigs is stated to be his only known Wood Release technique. 332
Yin–Yang Release and Black Receivers
Madara taught Obito Yin–Yang Release, which he intended to use with Black Receivers to suppress Nagato if persuasion failed. 37
- Manifests Black Receivers during his Ten-Tails jinchūriki state. 441
- Forms weapons from Truth-Seeking Orbs, including a shield and a DNA-shaped sword. 443
Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Transformation
Obito revives the Ten-Tails and becomes its jinchūriki during the war. 434 439
- Commands the Ten-Tails to bombard Allied Shinobi Forces strategists with Tailed Beast Bombs. 438
- Initially overwhelms the four reanimated Hokage, killing them despite their combined assault. 441
- Uses Truth-Seeking Orbs offensively after his transformation. 441
- His power fluctuates and he loses control of the Ten-Tails, leaving him vulnerable to coordinated attacks. 441 443
- Is eventually overwhelmed by Naruto, Sasuke, the Second and Fourth Hokage, Itachi, and Orochimaru. 443
Relationships
- Rin Nohara — The person most important to Obito; her death drove his desire to create the Infinite Tsukuyomi, while her revival destabilized his commitment to that plan. 266 275
- Kakashi Hatake — Former companion and recipient of Obito’s left Sharingan. Obito bitterly blames him for Rin’s death and confronts him using their matching Mangekyō powers. 18 142 238
- Madara Uchiha — Obito’s predecessor and manipulator, who chose him as an heir and placed the Cursed Seal on his heart. Obito fears Madara’s power even while acting under his name. 275 277
- Nagato Uzumaki — Akatsuki’s leader and Obito’s increasingly independent partner. Their shared Tailed Beast campaign fractures because Nagato rejects the Eye of the Moon Plan’s intended outcome. 28 31
- Uchiha Sasuke — Ally and intended pawn whose ocular potential Obito considers vital to his plans; Obito offers him Hashirama Cells to further strengthen him. 38 215
- Zetsu — Longtime collaborator who accompanies Obito during Akatsuki operations and helps him monitor events. 27 38
Story Role / Major Arcs
Akatsuki Conflict
Obito arrives at Shikkotsu Forest with Zetsu while masquerading as Madara Uchiha. Nagato’s unexpected independence immediately unsettles him, especially when Nagato asserts his authority over the Nine-Tails operation. 27 28
Although Obito and Nagato both pursue the Tailed Beasts, their goals differ fundamentally: Nagato wants super-weapons to suppress war, while Obito intends to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi through the Eye of the Moon Plan. 31
Land of Iron and Kirigakure
Obito leads Nagato, Sasuke, and Taka toward the Five Kage Summit in the Land of Iron, intending to seize Konoha’s reconstruction funds while Nagato infiltrates the summit. 56
After Akatsuki takes Kirigakure, Obito announces its conquest, handles prisoners and the former ruling faction, and organizes the village’s positions and war plans as its “former Fourth Mizukage.” 112 113
War With Konoha and the Allied Forces
Obito’s identity becomes increasingly difficult to conceal after Kakashi recognizes the matching Mangekyō Sharingan. He captures Kakashi with Kamui and later survives repeated attacks from Tobirama and Minato by retreating into the Kamui Dimension. 142 214
He leads Akatsuki and Kirigakure’s forces against Konoha and Kumogakure in the Land of Water, treating the conflict as a means to advance his own objectives rather than protect his soldiers. 226
Rin’s Revival and Madara’s Betrayal
Orochimaru revives Rin through Impure World Reincarnation, and Nagato brings her to Obito during his battle with the Third Raikage. Obito freezes upon seeing her, nearly exposing himself to a fatal attack before Kamui phases him through it. 233 266
After learning that Madara’s identical Cursed Seals were used to control both himself and Rin, Obito seeks treatment. Tsunade removes the talisman from his heart, freeing him from Madara’s direct restraint. 277 279
Ten-Tails Jinchūriki and Defeat
As the war escalates, Obito realizes that his original plan to flatten the Shinobi World is unreliable, but continues pursuing the Eye of the Moon Plan. He captures Kinkaku and Ginkaku with Kamui, asks Kabuto to summon Madara as cover, and revives the Ten-Tails. 428 429 434
After becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, Obito fights the four Hokage and the Allied Forces. His unstable control and the combined assault of Naruto, Sasuke, the Hokage, Itachi, and Orochimaru eventually bring him down. 441 443
Nagato uses Shisui’s dual Kotoamatsukami to control the weakened Obito, forcing him to use Samsara of Heavenly Life to restore Akatsuki members and Madara. Near death afterward, Obito resists Black Zetsu’s attempt to use his body to reclaim Madara’s Rinnegan. 443 444
