Background / History
Luo Xiao-Zuo, a programmer from the Celestial Empire, awakens in Nagato Uzumaki’s body during Pain’s assault on Konoha. His consciousness immediately clashes with Nagato’s original will for control while the Deva Path prepares to devastate the village with Shinra Tensei. 1
At first, he relies on the Six Paths of Pain because Nagato’s true body is physically impaired by its long connection to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Absorbing Kurama Chakra begins reversing this condition, restoring sensation and vitality to areas damaged by embedded Black Receivers. 6
His encounter with Naruto changes his priorities. After witnessing the presence connected to the Sage of Six Paths within Naruto, he abandons his attempt to seize Naruto’s soul and begins treating him as a potential ally rather than merely Akatsuki’s Nine-Tails target. 8 12
Nagato later rejects dependence on Pain, removes the Deva Path’s Akatsuki ring for himself, and resolves to handle matters through his own strength. 32
Appearance
Nagato is a red-haired man whose Rinnegan creates an oppressive, blade-like presence that can paralyze opponents with fear. 47
- Vibrant red Uzumaki hair. 47
- A pair of metallic, ripple-patterned Rinnegan. 47
- Later possesses transplanted ocular powers in addition to the Rinnegan, including Byakugan and Sharingan abilities. 24
- His red hair turns white after the Sage of Six Paths reconstructs the world. 422
Personality
Nagato is calculating, self-assured, and increasingly independent after gaining Kurama Chakra. Where the former Nagato often followed Yahiko and Konan’s initiatives, he begins setting Akatsuki’s agenda himself and withholding plans until he considers disclosure necessary. 10
He is ruthlessly pragmatic toward enemies and obstacles. Nagato extracts souls, reads memories, brainwashes political figures, and treats reincarnated shinobi as expendable resources when doing so advances his goals. 40 283 416
Despite this cruelty, he places exceptional value on loyalty. Konan is the one person he considers completely trustworthy, and he takes repeated measures to keep her trained, informed, and protected from threats such as Madara. 17 80 279
Nagato also displays an eccentric, dark sense of humor: he enjoys the posture of holding someone’s head while searching their memories, casually taunts powerful opponents, and can become distracted by mundane concerns such as Akatsuki’s food budget or funding. 38 40 113
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan and Six Paths Techniques
Nagato can wield both Rinnegan simultaneously, a feat presented as proof that he stands among the world’s Six Paths-level figures. 18
- Uses Shinra Tensei / Almighty Push to repel enemies and devastate large areas. 1 198 374
- Uses Banshō Ten'in to forcibly draw targets toward himself. 198 390
- Uses Chibaku Tensei / Planetary Devastation to raise massive sealing spheres and annihilate defensive formations. 112 148
- Employs the Preta Path to absorb ninjutsu, tailed-beast chakra, and even Hashirama’s chakra. 6 265 320
- Employs the Human Path to extract souls, inspect memories, copy techniques, and transfer learned knowledge to others. 40 270
- Uses the Asura Path, including mechanized weapons and a laser cannon. 110
- Uses the Animal Path for summons, path retrieval, and battlefield extraction. 10
- Uses the Naraka Path for restoration and lie detection. 10 295
Sage Arts
Nagato studies Shikkotsu Forest senjutsu under Sage Katsuyu and maintains natural energy around his body to shorten his Sage Mode activation time. 17 46
- Combines Sage Chakra with physical strikes, defeating the Raikage with a single punch. 61
- Uses Sage Art variations of gravitational techniques, including Sage Art: Banshō Ten'in and Sage Art: Planetary Devastation. 148 198
- Can shape surrounding natural energy into a predatory construct that intercepts and crushes high-speed attackers. 376
- Later injects Sage Art chakra into the tailed beasts, enabling them to enter Sage Mode after further practice. 334
Sealing and Uzumaki Techniques
As an Uzumaki, Nagato eventually employs powerful sealing techniques alongside his Rinnegan abilities. 213
- Uses Adamantine Sealing Chains to eliminate Hokage Shadow Clones and break heavily sealed barriers. 213 344
- Uses the Reaper Mask to counter the Nara clan’s Reaper Death Seal and manifest the Reaper itself. 385
- Seals Black Zetsu into a necklace with Planetary Devastation. 385
Medical Ninjutsu and Technique Replication
Nagato’s Human Path lets him acquire technical knowledge directly from souls and memories rather than learning through normal training. 40 147
- Copies the Yin Seal, Creation Rebirth, Strength of a Hundred, and Lightning Release Chakra Mode from their original users’ knowledge. 40 147
- Uses the Mystical Palm Technique to heal Suigetsu’s severe injuries. 270
- Transfers the Second Mizukage’s ninjutsu memories to Suigetsu after extracting his soul. 270
- His copied techniques still require his Sage Body to withstand their strain; he acknowledges that copied knowledge cannot replace long-term cultivation. 147
Split Bodies and Clone Warfare
Nagato develops a vast army of autonomous split bodies linked to his main consciousness. 262 321
- Plans the Ten Thousand Nagato Plan, intending to overwhelm the Ten-Tails through sheer numbers. 262
- Creates more than seventy thousand split bodies using Ten-Tails energy. 264
- Can upgrade his split bodies with his abilities and a portion of his chakra. 321
- Split bodies communicate with the main body and may act independently enough to develop differing attitudes and tactics. 320 390
Space-Time Ninjutsu
Nagato has access to Kamui-based movement and can escape or reposition through space-time techniques. 215 238
- Uses Kamui to transport himself, allies, prisoners, and revived individuals. 264 265
- Tears open space to reach the Sage of Six Paths in the Pure Land. 445
- His space-time mobility makes him especially difficult to contain when a battle turns unfavorable. 238
Tailed-Beast and Ten-Tails Control
Nagato captures and cooperates with Kurama, contracts with the other tailed beasts, and uses the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to revive the Ten-Tails. 154 257 258
- Rides Kurama into battle and uses the Nine-Tails as a test subject for Shinra Tensei. 153 198
- Forms contracts with seven tailed beasts and receives the method used to split the Ten-Tails. 257
- Uses the Ten-Tails’ life force through Samsara of Heavenly Life to resurrect Jiraiya. 264
- Draws on Ten-Tails chakra to strengthen himself, his split bodies, and the tailed beasts. 321 334

Relationships

- Yahiko — former Akatsuki leader and a central figure in Nagato’s past. Nagato attempts but fails to revive Yahiko, whose corpse had been made into the Deva Path. 10 264
- Naruto Uzumaki — initially a target whose Kurama Chakra Nagato absorbs; later viewed as someone capable of bearing peace and worth recruiting into Akatsuki. 6 12
- Obito Uchiha — temporary ally whom Nagato distrusts and identifies as the false “Madara.” Their cooperation remains strategic and unstable. 10 36 215
- Tsunade — former Fifth Hokage recruited into Akatsuki through pressure, persuasion, and promises of intelligence. She later trains Konan and supports Nagato’s resurrection project. 44 264
- Jiraiya — Nagato’s former teacher. Though Nagato dismisses him as strategically unhelpful, he revives Jiraiya through the Ten-Tails. 264 265

Story Role / Major Arcs
Konoha Assault
During the attack on Konoha, Nagato’s body becomes the battleground between Luo Xiao-Zuo and the original Nagato’s consciousness. Pain unleashes Shinra Tensei, while Nagato’s true body later descends to absorb Kurama Chakra directly from Naruto. 1 6
After encountering the Sage of Six Paths’ will through Naruto’s soul, Nagato abandons immediate plans to take Naruto’s power and instead reveals Naruto’s parentage to shift their relationship. 8
Departure from Pain and Akatsuki Reorganization
Nagato leaves Konoha with Konan, Tsunade, Hinata, and Obito, then returns to Amegakure and summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 29
He resolves to stop depending on Pain, gathers intelligence through Zetsu, reorganizes Akatsuki, recruits Tsunade, and publicly establishes himself as the organization’s intimidating leader. 32 44 47
War Against the Shinobi Villages
Nagato directs Akatsuki’s strategy against the Five Kage and advocates subtle timing rather than indiscriminate aggression in tailed-beast operations. 52
He overwhelms the Raikage, conquers Kirigakure through Planetary Devastation, and later captures the Nine-Tails after attacking Konoha. 61 112 154
Ten-Tails Resurrection and the Split-Body Army
After forming contracts with the tailed beasts, Nagato revives the Ten-Tails through the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 257 258
He uses the Ten-Tails to revive Jiraiya, create a massive split-body force, and rescue Akatsuki members who had been controlled through Impure World Reincarnation. 264 265
Pursuit of Greater Ocular Power
Nagato investigates the Jashin Cult’s rituals, ancient murals, the Ten-Tails’ history, and the Sage of Six Paths’ true nature. His search leads to a confrontation with Black Zetsu, who temporarily takes control of the Rinnegan. 340 355 363
After escaping this crisis, Nagato absorbs the White Snake Sage and Black Zetsu, awakens higher forms of the Rinnegan, and creates a Tenseigan before ultimately gaining the Six-Tomoe Rinnegan. 385 429 442
Conflict with the Sage of Six Paths
Nagato identifies the Sage of Six Paths as his true target and repeatedly attempts to overcome the immense gap between them through split bodies, soul-targeting attacks, absorbed sage power, and reconstructed armies. 411 415 417
He finally enters the Pure Land by tearing open space, confronting the Sage of Six Paths while Sasuke and Naruto resolve the conflict with Kaguya. 445 446
Trivia
- Nagato considers Konan the only Akatsuki member he can trust completely. 55 80
- He regards Naruto as more promising than Sasuke because Naruto can carry the burden of peace, while Sasuke is primarily a dangerous pawn connected to the Sage of Six Paths. 12 48
- Nagato’s habit of holding a victim’s head during a Human Path memory search is partly because he enjoys the posture. 40
- He does not always distinguish between important political matters and practical concerns; after conquering Kirigakure, he quickly shifts his attention to locating the village’s funds. 113
