Background

Reiatsu is first directly explained to Yusuke by Ryujin Jakka in his Mental World. Ryujin Jakka states that Zanpakuto wielders fight through spiritual power and demonstrates the difference between possessing a vast amount of soul power and possessing Reiatsu of superior quality. Even the soul energy of numerous Tailed Beasts cannot compensate for inferior quality. 34

In the Ninja World, Yusuke initially supplements Ryujin Jakka with Yin Release Chakra, since soul energy is treated as Yin Release Chakra there. This allows him to simulate Reiatsu, but it does not fundamentally improve the quality of his soul. 28 34 38

Yusuke's long-term training in the Mental World tempers his soul despite the Ninja World's restrictions. Upon reaching Hueco Mundo, where Reishi is vastly more abundant, this accumulated potential manifests as rapid “spiritual energy compensation,” sharply increasing his Reiatsu. 222

• Quality over quantity — Reiatsu quality determines whether spiritual pressure can suppress, damage, or erase another soul; additional Tailed Beast soul power alone cannot produce this change. 34
