History
Hidden experiments and Hueco Mundo
While serving as the 5th Division’s vice-captain for more than four centuries, Aizen secretly develops Hōgyoku technology and plans Hollowfication experiments. He recruits Kaname Tōsen and Ichimaru Gin, persuading Tōsen that reforming the Soul Society requires sacrifice, then decides that Soul Reapers of every rank—including captains—can serve as experimental subjects. 262 282
Aizen travels to Hueco Mundo with Gin through a self-developed Negación, intending to investigate and eventually use Hueco Mundo as a source of military strength. There, he finds Las Noches already ruled by an unknown masked Soul Reaper: Uchiha Yusuke. Aizen effortlessly defeats Yammy, identifies Ulquiorra as a Vasto Lorde-class Arrancar, and recognizes that the Espada represent a force far beyond his expectations. 263 264
Aizen clashes with Yusuke atop the Las Noches Dome. His Reiatsu incapacitates several Espada, and his swordsmanship briefly suppresses Yusuke, whose soul clone has reduced his available Reiatsu. Yusuke counters by absorbing Reiatsu through Fūjutsu Kyūin; unwilling to expose their decisive abilities, both men end the battle without a victor. 265 266
Soul disappearance incident
Unable to seize Hueco Mundo directly, Aizen continues his Soul Society plans. He gathers Soul Reaper and Rukongai souls on a large scale, creates Hollowfication victims, and uses the resulting chaos to frame Kisuke Urahara for the experiments. 268 275
Aizen’s deception is eventually exposed by Shinji Hirako, Urahara, and Tessai Tsukabishi. Although Shinji had long suspected his vice-captain, Aizen uses Kyōka Suigetsu and his carefully constructed façade to conceal his role until the Hollowfication incident is already underway. 269 273 274
Over a decade later, Aizen becomes captain of the 12th Division and director of the Department of Research and Development, while Gin succeeds him as captain of the 5th Division. He continues to watch Yusuke and Nagato Yu closely after learning that they can perceive flaws in Kyōka Suigetsu’s illusions. 281 282
White and the Hōgyoku theft
Aizen creates the experimental Hollow White to test Hollowfication on Isshin Shiba. He ambushes and injures Isshin, then watches Masaki Kurosaki fight White in order to observe Hollow influence on a Quincy. 311 312
Yusuke seals White and takes its true body before Aizen can reclaim it. This loss turns Aizen’s suspicion of Yusuke into a direct intention to eliminate him, as he concludes that Yusuke has been monitoring his work and can see through Kyōka Suigetsu. 312 313
During the battle at Sokyoku Hill, Aizen murders Central 46, manipulates the Gotei 13’s response to Rukia’s execution, and frames Yusuke to divide the captains. Once exposed as the architect of the Hollowfication experiments and soul disappearances, he openly abandons his gentle persona and attempts to extract Urahara’s Hōgyoku from Rukia with his own Hōgyoku. 330 331 342
Yusuke uses Shikenzho to divert Aizen’s attention, allowing Kagawa Miroku to sever Aizen’s arm and steal his Hōgyoku. Having lost both his objective and his advantage in Soul Society, Aizen escapes through a Gate of Hell. 343
Conquest of Hell
In Hell, Aizen uses his power to remove Togabito Soul Chains and free imprisoned sinners. He establishes control through a mixture of promised freedom, overwhelming force, and Kyōka Suigetsu, beginning with Togabito such as Zhu Lian and Black Blade. 363 364
Aizen discovers the Hell Will, a collective manifestation of the suffering endured in Hell. He binds Gin and Tōsen to it, granting them immortality and assigning them as his representatives while he begins merging with the Hell Will itself. 391
Assault on the worlds
Aizen later infiltrates the Royal Palace with Kyōka Suigetsu, kills the Soul King, and destabilizes the balance sustaining the Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the Human World. He intends to connect Hell to the other realms and use Orihime Inoue’s Fullbring to obtain greater power. 429 430
His forces attack Las Noches to seize Orihime, while Aizen himself confronts her at the Royal Palace. Gin ultimately betrays him, saving Orihime and severing Aizen’s arm in a repeat of Miroku’s earlier ambush. 430 434
Aizen’s Hell-Will fusion gives him regeneration as long as Hell remains connected to the battlefield. Orihime uses Santen Kesshun to expel the Hell Will and close the spatial rift, inadvertently allowing Aizen to separate from it and escape to the Valley of Screams. He retains three power seeds taken from the Soul King and vows to create a new world. 435
Appearance
Aizen initially presents himself as a scholarly, inconspicuous Soul Reaper. After abandoning his disguise, his bearing becomes commanding and domineering; after fusing with the Hell Will, his body becomes a grotesque, skinless giant form. 342 435
- Wears glasses and keeps his hair hanging down while maintaining his mild-mannered façade. 435
- Removes his glasses and slicks his hair back when openly revealing his ambition. 342
- Possesses a handsome face and an imposing presence once his disguise is dropped. 342
- In Hell-Will fusion, appears as a bloody, skinless body with Aizen’s face emerging from within the Hell Will. 435
Personality
Aizen is calculating, patient, and intensely pragmatic. He treats allies, enemies, and institutions as pieces to be positioned for his long-term objectives; his schemes include manufacturing crises, framing Urahara, exploiting the Gotei 13’s politics, and attempting to turn conflict between Soul Society and Hueco Mundo to his benefit. 266 275 331
He is also profoundly arrogant. Aizen seeks not merely strength, but the authority to transcend the existing order, overthrow the Soul King and Central 46, rule Hell, and ultimately create a new world. His confidence repeatedly leads him to underestimate Yusuke’s preparations and the possibility of betrayal by his own followers. 262 342 364 434
Abilities & Skills
Kyōka Suigetsu
Aizen’s Zanpakutō creates powerful illusions used for infiltration, manipulation, and concealing his true actions.
- Uses Kyōka Suigetsu to create false appearances, including illusory versions of himself and altered scenes at Sokyoku Hill. 281 331
- Evades Hell’s Togabito and Jailers by concealing himself and his group from their perception. 362
- Infiltrates the Royal Palace and bypasses its defenses through its illusionary power. 429
- Nagato Yu’s Pure Spirit Pill negates non-direct-damage effects, making her immune to Kyōka Suigetsu. 269
- Yusuke initially detects only abnormalities in Aizen’s Reiatsu, but later becomes able to see through Kyōka Suigetsu. 269 388
Negación
Aizen developed his own Negación technique for dimensional travel and confinement.
- Opens passages between Hueco Mundo, Soul Society, and the Human World while avoiding Seireitei surveillance. 263
- Creates sealed dimensional spaces capable of imprisoning spiritual bodies. 263
- Captain-class or Espada-class opponents can break such confinement within a few hours, preventing permanent imprisonment. 263
Reiatsu, swordsmanship, and Kidō
Aizen possesses Reiatsu far above ordinary captain level and combines it with high-speed swordsmanship and advanced Kidō.
- His pre-Hōgyoku Reiatsu is considered comparable to Yamamoto’s, though Yamamoto is assessed as stronger in a direct fight because of Ryūjin Jakka. 231
- Overwhelms lower-ranked Espada through Reiatsu alone and forces even stronger Espada to acknowledge him as a threat comparable to Yusuke. 265
- Matches Yoruichi-level Shunpo speed and engages Yusuke in high-speed Zanpakutō combat. 265
- Easily dispels Yusuke’s Way of Binding No. 79: Nine Luminaries Bind. 265
- Blocks Tessai’s attack with Bakudō #81: Void Severance and later counters the Monk of the Eye with Hadō: Goryū Tenmetsu. 275 430
Hōgyoku and Hollowfication research
Aizen is an exceptional researcher whose work rivals Kisuke Urahara’s.
- Creates a Hōgyoku using countless Soul Reaper souls. 342
- Conducts Hollowfication experiments on Soul Reapers and uses victims such as Shinji Hirako and Kensei Muguruma as test cases. 270 274
- Creates White as a Hollow designed from Soul Reaper material. 310 311
- Identifies the connection between berserk Hollows, Arrancar, Hōgyoku experiments, and Hueco Mundo’s ruler. 309
Hell authority
After entering Hell, Aizen gains influence over Togabito and eventually merges with the Hell Will.
- Removes Soul Chains binding Togabito, granting them freedom in exchange for service. 363 364
- Uses Kyōka Suigetsu and control over access to freedom to coerce Togabito before fully controlling the Hell Will. 391
- Binds Gin and Tōsen to the Hell Will, granting them immortality and making them his representatives. 391
- As a Hell-Will fusion, can decide the life or death of Togabito within Hell. 434
- Cannot directly exert Hell-based authority over beings outside Hell. 434
- Regenerates instantly while connected to Hell and continuously supplied by its power. 435
